Have you ever played a fan-made game before? This includes game mods (such as Project M) and ROM hacks (such as randomized Pokemon games) as well as fully fan-made projects.

A second question to those who answer "yes" in the poll: what are your favorite fan-made games you've played?

The only real fan made games Ive played were Fire Emblem: the Last Promise (which was pretty fucking good, could easily be a main game) and a pretty good hack of Super Mario World. Forget what it was called though.

I played a bunch of Pokmon ROM hacks when I was younger.

My favorite was this one where you were in a cave trying to escape from a drowzee or something, but I forgot the name.

Edit: it's Hypnos Lullaby

It's pretty short, I reccomend it Cal

Yeah. Most fan made games are really bad, though, so I don't play most of them.

The best complete fan game I've played is probably Black Mesa.

Some of the Pokemon room hacks are better than every single Pokmon game in existence, not counting multiplayer

I should look into some of these pokemon hacks. The only one I played was Omega Firered which had all (at the time) 386 pokemon hacked into some location in the game.

Well I play Ocarina of Time Beta Quest and Link to the Past randomizer all the time, so yes. I've also played several SNES rom hacks.

Since there's been a few replies, I may as well chime in with my opinion now: I've only played a few fan-made games myself, but the ones I played, I've really liked.

I've played one Fire Emblem ROM hack (FEGirls, a hack where every playable character is female, and the girls are taken from all the GBA FE games) and one randomized playthrough of Pokemon Soul Silver, where I lucked out and got Kyogre of all things as my starter. Also, way back I used to play Robot Arena 2 on my computer over a decade ago, I downloaded multiple fan-made mod packs that added new parts and robots from BattleBots and Robot Wars.

And finally, just last night I downloaded a cool fan-made game called Strike Witches STG, which is a bullet hell game based on the Strike Witches anime series.

I have this 3D Sonic test game installed. It's called "Sonic Utopia." Controlling with just a keyboard on my laptop, it's a little unwieldy at high speeds, but I think it'd be a good approach to 3D Sonic on consoles in a way that isn't as linear and race oriented like most modern 3D Sonic games. It does a good job of building more open, explorable levels in the style of Genesis era Sonic, only translated into 3 dimensions.

Some Zelda 2 hacks. Journey of a Day and Shadow of Night are brutal

Link to the Past: Parallel Worlds, highly recommended

I've played a few.

There was Gunman Chronicles (a Half-Life total conversion), if that counts. Sierra picked the devs up and it was later released as a retail game. I guess Counter-Strike was in a similar boat.

I played a little bit of The Nameless Mod for Deus Ex (I really should beat that one). Same for the Median XL Diablo II mod.

I've beaten AM2R. That one was great.

I had a lot of fun with Red Alert: A Path Beyond for a while, even though it suffered from having a handful of active servers. Shit was fun as hell if you got on at the right time and a server was filled.

It was a mod for Command & Conquer Renegade that converted everything to Red Alert, and included almost everything from it and it's expansions (IIRC when I stopped playing it, every unit and structure had been implemented except for the Attack Dog, Cruiser, Yak, and MiG)

Lots of maps were taken right out of Red Alert and made 3D, many chosen or designed to favor different combat styles. One map was pure infantry combat with just a Barracks at each base in a low visibility forest; another had bases on a big O shaped island with a lake in the middle, resulting in air and naval skirmishes for control of the lake to strike from.

You could even build your own Ore Truck to increase your teams cash flow, either mining your standard ore field, or seeking out the gem field hidden on most maps for more cash per haul. Particularly handy if the enemy keeps killing your bases AI Ore Truck. I usually was that enemy running constant Longbow airstrikes; but just like Red Alert, aircraft need to land and re-arm, so you cant just loiter running eternal harassment.

Spies were really fun. You'd appear on the enemy team roster when they checked scores, and could listen/speak through their team chat. Nothing like a little dubious intelligence to convince the enemy armor column that the Allies totally haven't mined the ungodly shit out of the East path to their base. Drive right through there my fellow Soviets, it's perfectly safe and not mined. Trust me!

Only one I can recall is a mod for Half Life 2 set in Toronto called City 7. Don't remember much aside from the hilariously cheesy voice acting and dialogue.

All the time. MUGEN, old school RPG Maker stuff, Little Fighter mods, and even whole released games like Fatal Fake, Hinokakera, Melty Blood (prior to AC), EFZ, Big Bang Beat, Bootfighter Windom XP SP-2, etc. Lots of Japanese fan-projects, obviously. I've been playing in an around doujin/homebrew for most of my PC lifespan, easily fifteen years.

Truthfully, I see less of this stuff now because a lot of it might start as an indie project, but it picks up an audience through word of mouth and soon finds its way to being green lit on Steam, which is awesome because people I like are finding their audience. But it also makes the novelty of finding something good and underappreciated a bit harder to come by.

Yes, I loved Project M.

I'm playing through X-COM's Longwar 2 mod right now and it's the bees knees.

Oh god, I forgot about MUGEN, too.
