- This isn't a question, but I'm thinking about getting into magic. A shop near me does Pauper on Wednesday nights, so I'm really thinking about getting into it because of the low investment. I can buy two tier 1 decks for less than $100 total. Dang! Obviously, the first deck I'm going to build is burn, then probably a Delver variant. Do you know anything about the format? It seems really cool. If you know nothing, go to mtg goldfish pauper metagame. It has a bunch of the meta decks.
- I am also slightly considering jumping into Modern. U/R storm would probably be the deck I dive in with. Although my heart belongs to burn, I think U/R would be fun to play and learn it seems to always be relevant in any format. Thoughts? Is there any point to try and play a format where 4x Scalding Tarn will cost me $60 per card / $240 for one set. I mean... that sounds like too high of a barrier to entry to even consider. Storm can function without them, but why would you want to?

Re: Draft Mercs - I think the format was a great idea - having a shortened version of Mercs was a nice stopgap from a full year long version. I did miss the team building aspect of it, though, and jumping right into full teams for everyone made things a bit of a headache when planning abilities (not to mention some minor ruling issues and lack of early wins really hurting my team). I would have at least played things out to the end if the finals hadn't coincided with Gen Con, but I don't think we missed out on much.

Depending on my work/life situation if/when the next Mercs game happens, I'd be up for playing again. I think I'm definitely done admining, though, unless it was in a very, very limited capacity - it wouldn't be fair to the other admins after the way M4 played out.

Nothing much planned for the holiday. Just going to take it easy. Thanksgiving was more of the big holiday -- I went down to visit my parents and then we went on family vacation to Branson. (This was Dad's idea. The sightseeing was pretty meh but whatever, family time was nice.)

Draft mercs was fun. It turned out more engaging and drama-y than I expected from a short experimental format, and I wish I'd journaled at least some of it. The team-building thing was cool with all the gimmick teams and broken combos and such. Also Lopen's stunt with SHADOW YU so good

But I don't really see myself playing again. I had a lot of fun playing, but these days I have more fun watching, you know what I mean? I might admin or something. I'm like reverse Tiro.

I live in the Chicago suburbs. It's a 45-minute commute by train which is just the right time for a nice nap. Never been to the iO theater; I'm not that much into movies.

Too bad I couldn't go to GenCon with ya this year! First time I've missed it in a decade+. I'll probably see ya there in 2018, though. I feel like being an admin is such an exhausting job where you're never thanked and constantly ridiculed. I dunno if I could do it, I'm not cut out for that kind of work, lol.

You should play again, though, at least if I am playing that is.

I'm actually here pretty much every week, at least a couple of times. I just don't really post very much anymore. Especially now that the projects I'm most interested in aren't active.

Are you doing anything for the holidays? My extended family on my father's side is Muslim, and we will sometimes get together around Christmas just to have dinner and spend time together. Although, I suspect that maybe being outside of the U.S., you may not get extra time off around this time of the year?

Of course you fell down. I would hate it if something like that happened on my wedding day! Although, did you kind of have a backup plan since you were planning on a date during winter in your area? I feel like you had to know that snow was a possibility! I bet going to DR will be a blast! January is the perfect time to go, because it'll be cold as hell up here and you'll be itching for another vacation after the holidays.

Life is well for me. I just finished my first year of graduate school and I'm trying to relax a bit before the next semester begins. Looking forward to it! Remind me: what is the usual stuff on part with the rest of your life, again? I wanna say nursing?

Is it weird that I'm also considering that same role? I feel like playing would be such a time investment nowadays, and I don't know if I have anything left that I want to prove to myself after a couple of successful games (by my own standards). Mercs 4 was exhausting, yo.

The iO theater is not actually for movies. It's a little live venue with two theater rooms where there is live comedy. I think it's always improv. There are different shows that follow certain themes (I've seen a world news theme and Shakespeare theme), and every show I've gone to has been a really fun time for a fairly cheap price. You should check it out some time! I'd say it's worth the trip for a night out with a couple of buddies.

Is it weird that I also kind of don't really have a desire to sight-see? I've been on a few trips around the world, and I dunno, I just don't really gain anything from walking around and observing the area. I still do it because I enjoy the time spent with family or friends, don't get me wrong!

- What are you nervous about?

1. It was going pretty well for about a week until life happened, and I feel like I'm drowning in every aspect of my life. (That's where the nervousness comes in!) Every time I look at it, it gets bigger and scarier, and I panic and go to something else. Like replying in this topic!

2. Draft mercs would have been much better with two competent admins who didn't decide to buy a house and have work dump on them. I tried to work on some structure here and there but I shouldn't have taken the job.

I'm almost definitely not going to play again. I just suck too much. I'd love to try admin-ing again, though, now that I actually own said house. What can I say, I'm better at judging than playing, just like in Magic.

3. Pauper is pretty neat, though I don't know much at all in the format. My buddy Dave plays a bunch of Pauper on MTGO though. I can hook you up -- he's a local MI player just like us. Actually, you'd probably enjoy playing Legacy Roulette with us, too!

4. AFAIK Burn is still a real deck and isn't going anywhere. That said, Storm is actually cheaper if you're willing to run off-color fetches instead of Tarns. It's suboptimal, sure, but not by that much if you're just planning to jam FNMs with it. If you decide you want to go bigger, you can just get Tarns then. IT's not like the other fetches are bad investments.

5. Everything, honestly. I'm just so damn overwhelmed.
