I had a discussion with people a while ago when I complained that it was 57 degrees in LA, which they insisted wasn't cold. By chance, it's 57 degrees again. Does that qualify as cold, or do you need to be in the 40s or 30s?

I'd love 57 degree weather right now. It's colder here. With that said, I have respect for people who live in even colder areas. Minnesota, for example. The kind of cold where you're afraid you're going to die running between your car and a building at a rest stop.

If there's no wind, I don't really feel a particular sensation of cold unless it's at least below 40. Wind chill is a big factor though. I'll say around there is when I start to think it's cold. Live in North Carolina.

cold is subjective, it's whenever it's noticeably lower than what you're used to in the area where you live

Cold is objective. Anything with numbers assigned to it is 100% objectively quantifiable. And this is a case where certain numbers can kill you. Antarctica isn't not cold on days where it kills an uncovered person in ten minutes instead of eight. And those are numbers, dude. They may not be verified or sourced or accurate but they're definitely numerical and that makes them objective. All in all I don't think your post has much validity, I rate it 3/10

If it is currently below 65 degrees it is cold.

Okay so like first of all you are WAY too intense dude

And secondly I think he's right. Yes scientifically and factually "cold" might have a definition but in general when people say an area is cold they actually mean "it's colder than <what i'm used to>/<the average for this area>" and i'd say the definition of a word, in this context, should be "what people actually use it to mean" rather than "the scientifically accurate definition" so yeah

I reject your baseless claims of intensity on the grounds that they are unsubstantiated and an obvious (and highly inappropriate) attack on my character

And no he is incorrect, did you not understand the very simple explanation I gave you about how numbers have objective weight to them? Because they do. Arguing about your emotional response to the weather is simply meaningless, numbers are reality. If the numbers say it's cold, it's cold, regardless of whether you feel like it should be or not. Your post is a 3/10, and those are numbers so you know they're right.

57 is definitely not cold. 57 is still too warm for a coat.

40s might be warm or cold depending on the time of year. Like, 45 in May is kinda cool. 45 in December (which we actually had last weekend) is "wow it's super nice out."

You need sub-20 degrees before it's indisputably cold.

You gotta to be at least 0 Celsius before you start talking chilly. Sure, anything under 10C can be a little chilly with the wind, but it's not cold until you have to start wearing gloves and stuff. I'd say anything under -20 is uncomfortably cold, while -5 to -15 is pretty reasonable winter weather, and anything higher than that is Global Warming pulling a prank on us.

45 and below is cold
90 and above is hot

Depending on the climate you live in, you may feel differently. I think upper 80's can be hot, but once you get to 90 I don't think it's ridiculous for anyone to say "It's hot". I think 45 isn't too bad either, but once you get there it's reasonable to think it's cold.

it depends on the time of year

in summer, a 57 degree day is cold if that's the high and not the temperature at 3am. hot is mid-high 80s.

in winter, 57 is insanely warm, and it's only "uncomfortably" cold at freezing or below.

It's recently dropped to below 20C in Qatar and the security staff standing outside are wrapped up in three layers. Kids come to school wearing jackets, fur coats, some even wearing gloves.

They come into the class in the morning saying how cold it is and I say to them "you have no idea what it means to be cold!" Even though I do feel a little chill.

I come to work wearing shirt and trousers. I refuse to be so detached from British reality that 20C is a temperature that requires an extra layer.

(Except for one time where I wore a t-shirt underneath in secret but that was just one time)
