An entire generation has come and gone and I barely noticed.

I never bought a Wii U or Xbox One. I have never even been in the same room as a Wii U or Xbox One. The only reason that doesn't apply to the PS4 as well is that my brother got me one as a Christmas gift a few years ago. He "borrowed" it back this summer, along with all my games, meaning that the newest consoles I have left are my PS3 and Wii, and I only dust them off a couple times a month.

I keep trying to convince myself that the Switch is a good buy, but I'm worried that I'll be paying hundreds of dollars for something I'll barely use.

It's not lack of money that's the problem. I've put hundreds into PC games. It's just that I can't find a reason to buy a console that I'll never use.

I'm in the same boat as the OP, except I can also claim total exemption from the PlayStation as well. Part of this is because my TV is trapped in a secluded area of the basement I wouldn't otherwise visit, part of it is because I've been content gaming on my computer, and part of it is because I don't have anyone to game with. For some, the appeal of console gaming is being able to sit on your couch with a controller in their hand, but for me a strong part was the connections I had with my friends. Even online friends. But now, there's no one I know on those platforms (other than B8'ers, I guess.)

If you're going out of your way to trash consoles on a gamefaqs message board, then maybe consoles aren't for you

Consoles and PC have huge overlap these days. I'm pretty much exclusively a PC gamer these days, but a lot of people are playing the same games on console and loving them.

The increasingly huge overlap of PC and consoles (or lack of exclusives compared to the past, if you'd rather,) makes consoles feel less impressive. That said, gaming in general is the best it's been in forever. 2017 especially has an argument for being the best year ever, and nearly all of those games are available on consoles.

Yes it has lost it's charm

Mostly becasue you don't have physical things to insert into the console.
You don't collect and show off the boxes or carts. There is no manual to read.
The games themselves are constructed different and mid range budgeted games have mostly vanished.
Much of the charm is gone.
The games are still plenty fun though.

Oddly though even though PC gaming also lost it's physical media, it still has charm.

You're older than you've ever been, and now you're even older.

And now you're even older. And now you're even older.

It's just more convenient for me personally to play on the PC.

Not to mention I don't have a flat screen/smart/HD TV yet!

Gaming is fine. Console gaming, however, has indeed lost its charm when you can do all the same stuff sitting at your computer where you (or at least I) do everything else.

Ah you're right. I read your rebuttal and now that I've had charm properly defined to me I completely agree.

It's hard for a video game to pull me away from my expensive computer

Computer gaming is just so ridiculously convenient, comfortable and efficient for single player and online stuff. My browser and chat programs are always just a monitor away. I can wear headphones. I won't have roommates requesting access to anything. The gmes are so much cheaper. The frame rates are higher. The list goes on

The only time I'll boot up a console nowadays is for party games

Yes, I agree with all of this. With the exception of Mario and Zelda being well worth the Switch purchase in addition to playing everything else on steam.

I'm almost exclusively PC these days, for a variety of reasons.

1. I'm playing more and more online multiplayer games and less and less singleplayer games. Online mutliplayer is done better by PC.
2. I can be in multiple things at once from a PC, be on skype, easily tab out to my browser, share screens over skype, even use online control sharing (which I've done for Final Fantasy Tactics over the net).
3. I can play in bed from my laptop with my blankets on, and TBH I like to be comfy when I'm at home. This does apply to the Wii-U and the switch (I own a Wii-U, pretty much the only console I've put some time into recently).
4. There are some PC exclusives that I went in deep for (or games that got much more support on PC). TF2 for a while, then Starcraft 2 for a while, then Heroes of the Storm for a while, then Tree of Saviour for a while. Admittedly my currently most played PC game has a pretty solid version for a console I own (FFXIV) but like...basically 10 straight years of my favourite game happening to be on PC. That's more than long enough for me to form habits.
