The dialouge sucked, but a better actor would have helped. It's not that he's a bad actor. He did a movie called Broken Glass or something like that and he was really good in it. The dialogue was awful, though, and I don't think any amount of charm would have helped.

Then again, Adam Driver seems to be playing pretty much the exact same role pretty damn well, so who knows.

Hayden did fine as Anakin, emotions and appearance wise. I don't think anyone could have done well with the fucking horrible script that he was given.

Definitely. I think Christensen is a decent actor but the part was a poor match for him. It needed him to be likeable, charismatic, and believable as a love interest. But he just comes across as a creep. He does well in the moments calling for him to be dark and evil but is a poor match for the rest.

Of course there are other factors. He probably didn't get much direction with the scenes that were hard for him. Also the writing was not very good. And there certainly are actors who would have done worse than him.

I wouldn't say Hayden is the main reason the character doesn't work but it definitely could have been better with a talented actor who was a better fit.

As far as direction goes iirc he was actually micromanaged by Lucas, and wasn't given much free reign to do anything that deviated from Lucas or the script.

Ewan McGregor however was given less direction, a lot more input on his character, and was allowed to improvise as far as his script and actions went a bit as he saw necessary to

While I don't think Hayden Christensen is completely to blame for how bad Anakin turned out, I do think a better actor could have done more with what he was given. At that point in his career, I don't Christensen was ready for a role like that, at least not without better direction. As was already pointed out, Ewen McGregor had to deal with the same bad dialogue, and he did a much better job of it, managing to emerge as one of the high points of the prequels.
