If they didn't want to do that they wouldn't have campaigned for the removal of net neutrality. That'd be like campaigning for legalizing weed and saying you don't plan to toke some jopic

In the announcement, the Tennessee Republican touts that this bill will prevent blocking and throttling of legal web content

You mean, just like it is now?

Most importantly, it would still allow for the creation of Internet fast lanes, which means everyone gets a baseline browsing speed but ISPs can charge users or websites more for access to faster internet.

You mean, just like you already can by paying for a faster package?

Buncha Chicken Littles around here. No, the sky is not falling on the Internet.

I don't much like that comparison. I think people should have the right to use weed if they want, but I have no interest in using it, myself.

I agree that it's obvious that the ISPs are going to make the most of the repeal of net neutrality in their favor, though.

Most of the time, when a company makes more profits, it is done because they are able to better please their customers, not because they fucked them over.

It's like most of you all think that there's always some sort of inverse relationship between how much money a company makes and how satisfied their customers are.

You do realize companies that don't have competition don't give a fuck about what the consumer thinks right? ISPs can shit all over you and what can you do? Live without internet?

Um, yes. That is absolutely an option for 99% of people. If there is ever a dire need, almost every town and city in the US has a place you can go to use it for free to apply for jobs, pay bills, etc.

So now that I completely debunked that argument. Does anyone have any others?

Oh yeah, and I'm not aware of any place in the US that has literally only 1 option for internet. Even small towns have several ISPs, including their cell phone providers.

Pfft free internet from starbucks. Have fun with that shit life. Several ISPs my ass. If you think cell internet is worth anything compared to ISPs you clearly don't know what half way decent internet is. Next you are going to say Satellite internet is good.

This is an incredibly weak argument, dude. Sure, if you take "necessity" to mean the most spartan ulilitarian lifestyle possible then sure, people can live without basic home internet access.

A duopoly is not an example of healthy market competition working as intended. It's anti consumer. These people will fuck you if you give them a chance and the only option people will have is to stop using what is now an essential part of life in our society.

What's stopping them from just jacking our rates now, then? And I don't mean in a way that violates net neutrality rules. Just in general.

Because people are expecting it. Once things calm down and the whole thing is forgotten then they will jack up the prices.

Easier to drop a frog in cold water and slowly raise the temperature than fight to keep the frog in a pot of boiling water to begin with.

Reductio ad absurdum. Acknowledging that monopolies and duopolies are bad for business doesn't mean that any time a monopoly or duopoly exists they're going to enforce nationwide slavery.

I bet you couldn't live a month without internet and or allowed only to use starbucks wifi.

Also, still not sure why people like you like taking it up the ass by ISPs.

Sorry, but electricity is 1000x less of a luxury than internet. Seriously, think about what electricity is used for (cooking, heating, lighting, appliances), and then think about what internet is used for.

"What internet is used for" is quite a broad thing. It can be used for learning how to cook. It can be used for learning how to fix heating, lighting, and other appliances. It can be used for work, and it can be used for leisure.

Internet access is becoming more and more of a necessity. The fact that I have internet access at home means I can do most of my job from home if I wanted to.

Pfft. You can't even live without electricity? What a whiner. You can cook food with a campfire. You can wash your clothes by hand. You can even take a bath with a bucket of cold water. Light, thats what fire is for. Appliances, pfft.

The internet does many of those things, but it hasn't replaced other methods of learning how to cook and fix stuff. There are still books available at your local library. And like I've stated, there are places where anyone can use the internet for free in pretty much any town or city.

The internet absolutely has replaced other methods of learning how to cook and fix things.

Before the internet, people used big ass encyclopedias to look up information about things. Nobody uses those any more. You no longer need cook books because you can just look up videos about how to cook certain foods. You no longer need to be an expert on how to fix a car because you can look up videos about how to fix a car.

What are you talking about?

Smh

And trying to argue that the internet isn't necessary because you can get free internet access at places is kinda stupid.

Right, because it's a convenience. It brings the cook book right to your home. Just like ordering pizza and having it delivered to your home is a convenience as well.

Just like electricity at home is a convenience. Just like running water at home is a convenience.

You can go to other places and use their electricity and running water.

I guess we don't, do we? Nor do we really need housing that isn't a massive barracks-styled warehouse with a well in the center and toilets on the outskirts.
Glad we've established we don't need anything, though.
