You'll be lost either way. The series transforms from a cartoon to live-action instantly. Not to mention the sudden change in tone and why so many characters suddenly disappear.

You would need a time machine to go back into the past to understand the upbringing of Bob Kane, the creator of Batman, to really grasp the theme and literary devices which he uses, to understand the comic, to understand the shows, to understand the movies.
