So I'm doing this AncestryDNA thing, or to be more precise, I'm in that 6-8 week waiting period while you wait for them to analyze my results. It was actually my mom's idea, but I'd thought about doing it before because I don't really know anything about my family history or heritage, especially on my dad's side since he was adopted. I claim Irish heritage because of my last name, but I'm not actually related by blood to my paternal grandfather, so who knows if I actually have any Irish in me at all. Maybe I've just been a fraud my whole life! I could guess I probably have some Dutch in me based on my mom's maiden name, but that's about it.

Has anyone else done this stuff before? It seems pretty interesting and I'm actually kind of excited to see what the results are.

4-3 was hurt by being interrupted by the holidays. Never really felt into it, kind of forgot a lot of details.

Regardless with clean slate we move on to 4-4! I guess we'll see how this game tries to tie it all together, as this looks to be the beginning of the end.

The last few episodes of Dragon Ball were great! This show is such wonderful camp and genuinely funny but also delivers on the feeling of a grand adventure in a really sweet way. Goku turning into that big King Kong... thing... really surprised me and Bulma and Yamcha finally realizing they don't need the Dragon Balls and should just go out together was genuinely lol.

It'll be a year before the Dragon Balls can be found again. I guess I'm headed into Season 2 here. Out of like... 8 or so? In the original series? Episode 14 coming at me next time I pick this up.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin #5 - Clash at Loum beated! This was pretty cool and definitely more in-line with #3 than the rest. It does have a major problem (for me anyway) but I won't get into that just yet. I'll start with the good, of which there is a good amount. We see the horrors of the dawn of the One Year War up close and personally through the eyes of two short-lived young lovers whose colony is the one chosen by Zeon to bombard Earth in an attempt to wipe out the Federation's main base at Jaburo. Things... don't quite go as planned, though, so in addition to all those tens of thousands of lives lost on the colony, half the world's population is killed too. "Whoops." GG. Gihren and Dozle Zabi spend the remainder of the episode reminding everyone else in Zeon's ranks that they're war criminals now so they'd better not lose. Uhh... yeah? I think that's fair? I would have preferred it if there were less "narrator explains the in-between stuff" inherent to many OVAs, though. Give me another 15-20 minutes or so of animation immediately following the colony drop where we watch Earth's survivors react in shock, please. That'd push it over the top.

Most of the cast was in good form this chapter. Char is great and I fully support him taunting the Black Stars considering the guy who hates him the most suffers yet another annoying case of ANGRY YELLING OLD MAN Syndrome (AYOMS). Can we not with all the yelling in this series? It hurts my eardrums. What is it with UC characters over the age of 33 and thinking they're at Beatles concerts? Anyway, Char actually vanishes from the plot for long periods of time, which is a bit odd but also a welcome thing, because Amuro and (especially) Sayla get some good material. We get a little bit of School Days Amuro, except not really, because he's invited by Kai and his Gang of No Good Very Bad Influences (just ask Haro!) to literally take a bulldozer into a Federation security zone and try to SNEAK in with it to see what the ruckus is about. These are not smart people right now, ladies and gentlezeon. Punk kids, basically. Oh, Hayate shows up, too. Anyway, the soldiers let Amuro off the hook because he's Tem Ray's kid which helps foster the resentment that Kai and Hayate feel toward him early on in the original series, so that's neat.

Sayla's got the better end of the stick though with her return to Texas Colony and all that it entails. Her foster father's health is dropping but things look up not long after her arrival. Unfortunately, some anti-Zeonic hoodlums show up and torch the old Aznable Estate and try to blow up the house she's in too. She suddenly transforms into Soldier Girl (I'll admit it's... pretty random but lol most OVAs...) and leads the charge like the heroine I always want her to be (and Tomino only occasionally lets her be). The fighting here is well-done but the real beat is emotion and it's Sayla's when the violence kills her poor foster father. Sayla was also tipped earlier on by an old contact from Origin #1 that Char is moving up in the ranks in a red mobile suit and she realizes Casval probably killed the original Char and took his place. She sees the red mobile suit right as the big battle for Loum breaks out too but it flies away, leaving her in agony.

Naturally, the battle itself is well-done -- what we see of it, anyway. It barely begins, but we do get some cool scenes with Garma showing off how bad he is at being a Zabi (because you know he actually is like a decent person) while the opening shots are exchanged. The episode ends with Char streaking through and the "Red Comet" legend being born; he pushes hard on his Zaku's engines and it's just a very strong moment in this series. Very striking and it speaks well to who he is. I look forward to #6 this May tying things up and leading into the original show!

The big problem I alluded to earlier with this chapter really does some damage though. Gundam has never been the best with its female characters, including much of UC Gundam IMO, and I'm very attuned to this. It does bother me. Sadly, Dozle Zabi is back to being the worst again like he was in #1, except this time it plays directly into that pet peeve of mine. Remember when I complained that in #4 he abruptly asked that cadet from Char and Garma's academy squad to bear his children? And remember how she doesn't even get the luxury of replying; her character doesn't even get the agency of saying yes, she just stares in disbelief? Well, we have an extended scene in #5 where she's completely transformed from career-oriented young woman into his trophy wife and the mother of their children, and Dozle (who is never not screaming; seriously, end my suffering, I hate this aspect so much) literally says to her "you will bear me many children!" and she literally just smiles like a complete dope and we're supposed to feel happy for them but it is so, so, so creepy but also unintentional? Which makes it worse? Like wow, just wow, I'm all for families being happy but this poor woman is just so wronged by this series' writing. Well, it was nice to see baby Mineva for ten seconds I guess since I love who she grows up to be 20 years later in Unicorn, but OI, OI, OI.

I will award #5 a coveted 8.8 which is slightly lower than #3. I understand why #5 gets so much praise and I think some Gundam nuts would scorn me for ranking it lower than a previous episode but it is what it is; the Dozle stuff just really rubs me the wrong way to the point where if there wasn't so much I enjoy about this series/franchise/OVA chapter/etc I'd give it like a 3. But this was still quite good overall.

Xenoblade 2 Update/Thoughts/Responses:

"No Common Light Element Blades": "oh" well that explains things then. i'm dumb.

I'm also continuing on at an unbelievably glacial pace. I actually think the Affinity Charts annoy me more than pulling Rare Blades but perhaps I am just mollified because I had the good fortune to get KOS-MOS when I was giving my newest party member a bunch of blades/clearing out my stockpile of cores. It'd be a million times better if, and this goes for field skill application too, if you didn't need them actively engaged (and to a lesser extent because I could live with this) in the active party. so much menuing.

The world also feels a lot smaller/less alive/less "wow" than Xenoblade or especially X. Which is unfortunate. I also feel like if it weren't for the fact that I go wandering off exploring AT ALL TIMES that this would be surprisingly short so far for a Xeno game if you just hopped from story beat to story beat. Heck, even if you throw in the actual quests even.

Some interesting stuff is/was going down though so that's nice. would like to have been able to change the music in the area i was exploring just recently though. didn't even change with time of day too the worst.

For what it's worth, the speed run record for Xenoblade 2 is considerably longer than for XCX. Although, it's not really a fair comparison since the Xenoblade 2 run is far less optimized. It's probably not the greatest idea to judge the length of a Xeno game based on runs that skips all cutscenes either. >_>

So yeah, this Tsuredure Children show is pretty great. Reminds me a lot of Haruhi-chan because of how fast-paced it is, although there are so many characters and it switches between them so often that I don't think I actually know any of their names.

so the best character interactions are redheaded nice guy/oblivious to love girl with the twin tails, student council president/smoker girl, and anything with the blonde guy who is literally Teddie if he actually knew anything about women

which is strange because girls who smoke and girls who are oblivious to love are major turnoffs for me in real life but I guess that's the power of fiction
