There's no Black Mirror topic anymore so I just want to say in here that I loved Metalhead (finally an episode I can say I truly loved this season). It's refreshingly simple and straightforward; no twist, no simulation, no messy merging of various tech and ideas. It's like The Terminator mixed with the classic Twilight Zone episode The Invaders, and the sparse dialogue and black-and-white stylization were used perfectly. Very nice classic horror shots used throughout too. Maxine Peake was a great emotive actress for an episode like this.

Hey guys, you don't need to be told this but Insidious 4 is a bad movie.

They had that really cool effect from the trailers where the girl is screaming and then he puts the key finger in her throat and it gets all muted. Instead of using that effect, they just cut off the screaming entirely.

Also, the plot is a mess. Nothing is explained or anything.

And Cleft Lip Key Fingers will never be a horror icon. Because he is a bad monster.

I think it fits really well. It portrays the unrelenting march of technological evolution in a grounded manner. The need and means to create the most advanced AI isn't too far away from the present, and Metalhead doesn't feel too far-fetched as a result. Despite the antagonistic nature of the dogs, it's still our own fault for pushing technology too far.

I don't know though, the big things I like about Black Mirror is how the tech almost always works as intended (it's almost always the humans themselves causing the issues) and how it shows the effect the developing tech has on society

Metalhead doesn't really do either. The tech is all but objectively evil (it serves no purpose except hunting and killing) and there's not much of a society left

Honestly I could see Metalhead being made into its own post-apocalyptic sci-fi horror movie but as part of an anthology it just felt really out of place

Just finished the season, overall I think I rank them

Hang the DJ > USS Callister > Black Museum > Metalhead = Crocodile > Arkangel

Arkangel was the only one I really found disappointing. Story was way too predictable.

Really enjoyed Black Museum as well. I love the futuristic update on the Tourist Trap/Wax Museum hook, and the vignettes were pretty terrifying. I'm always a sucker for both of these things, especially anthology formats.

So I'd rank the episodes:
Metalhead > Black Museum > Hang the DJ > USS Callister > Crocodile > Arkangel

Overall, an honestly disappointing season of Black Mirror. They definitely saved the best for last, those 2 alone salvaged the season for me. I mean, I won't say even the weaker episodes aren't absolutely engaging, gripping, well-shot, and imaginative, because they definitely are, they're just missing crucial elements that make stand-out less compared to the rest of the series.

Terror Trailers Thursday

Hellraiser: Judgment
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6T4oDRP69Xo

It's the 10th Hellraiser film! It will feature yet another new actor in the Pinhead role. Despite the last film being made merely to keep the rights to the franchise, Judgment actually seems to have some effort put into it. Still, pretty hard to be excited for this considering the series track record.

Slender Man
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySy8mcceTno

I like the Slender Man and was excited for a film adaptation, but this doesn't look too hot. I get Bye Bye Man vibes from this for real. Obviously, the real film might be different, but so far this looks boring and watered-down.

Channel Zero Season 3: Butcher's Block
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZW6MQwIYKwY

Channel Zero is a criminally underlooked anthology horror series, which bases its seasons on different Creepypasta stories. Butcher's Block is based of the story Search And Rescue Woods, one I'm not too familiar with, but basically it deals with mysterious happenings and unsolved disappearances. It looks like another wicked season for a great show!

Victor Crowley
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAY1YKne0RQ

This film was actually released last year, in surprise screenings for fans who thought they were going to the see the original Hatchet film. Now, the comedy-slasher is coming to DVD, and obviously it looks like a super-fun time! I really like that Q from Impractical Jokers in this one, that alone has me excited.

not sure I like the slapped-on explanation that the moonlight man was a real, actual grave robber. he still looks terrifying but i think it would have worked way better if he was just left as this mysterious, haunting entity.

I read the book in high school and thought the exact same thing about him

For what it's worth though, the movie is pretty faithful to the book

One difference from the book:
In the movie he just kind of had a heart attack, but in the movie, it's brought on by her kicking him in the junk when he's trying to force himself on her. It makes her a little more complicit in his death (it was self defense, but she wrestled with the idea that nobody's going to believe her and that even if she manages to escape, she's still responsible for it)

oh I assumed you had played that months ago

And I'm really not sure how I felt about Sacred Deer. It was my third film from the director (after Dogtooth and The Lobster).

Part of what throws me off is the stilted acting and almost robotic personalities. It's becoming a recurring trait of Lanthimos. In Dogtooth and The Lobster, it kind of fit. Dogtooth was a notably bizarre family where the children didn't understand socially acceptable behavior. The Lobster was a world that was just completely backwards, where nothing was normal about society so people having off personalities/behaviors made sense. Sacred Deer isn't like that though; the world is presented as normal in every way besides the stilted behavior (and later the powers that Martin may have had) so I feel like having everyone act the way they did took away from it.

That being said, the score was easily one of the best of the year and the atmosphere was fantastic, so I'm a little torn.

Edit: I think part of the issue with that too is that I think Martin had developmental issues? (If it didn't say that it implied it, I can't quite remember). But it's really hard to understand what among his behavior is part of his personal issues and what is part of just the stilted acting that's so common in Lanthimos films).

Wow was Split really last year? Must have been early. Either way I recall very little actual horror in it, though it was a great thriller unlike It Comes at Night which excelled at exactly one thing. Still pissed at that marketing team.

Get Out > It > Split for me but last year wasn't great for horror in general

And this one started with the worst Insidious yet. Oy vey. They really need to quit that franchise now before they shit themselves.

Of all the crappy but undeniably unique horror movies to get a reboot... Truth or Dare is like near the bottom on my list of what I would have suspected.

I watched the original like a month before the new one was announced. On SyFy of all places I'm pretty sure.

But everything else has been fine, even bad movies like Insidious 4 because at the very least it's a fun story and an inside joke about it as well.

See, I liked Gerald's Game, but I feel like it got too Stephen King by the end of it. I would have been perfectly fine with it ending after she recovers, but letting it end on something hinting that the Moonlight Man was real after all rather than going into full blown expository mode to reveal everything about him makes it less special to me. I get why they did it, and I'm sure it plays out better in the book, but I felt like that was a bit too much.

About an hour and a half into Detroit

it's not listed as a horror movie but goddamn it should be

easiest comparison is Get Out, which is similar subject matter. Get Out is a lot more clever in its racial commentary but Detroit is probably scarier

Hold on, John Krasinski is the one writing and directing it? And Emily Blunt is married to him? I have no ungodly idea how this will turn out now. It feels like it might end up being a project created from a "cool" idea that Krasinski had.

Also if you rate horror movies, you have to include mother! And if you include mother! you also need to include it in it's own ranking because it's such a freaking impossibly strange movie that I can't really compare to anything and I'm still not sure if I liked it or not or if I want to live life after seeing it months ago.

Terror Trailers Thursday
The weekly update for the latest in horror trailers and news that piques my interest.

The Executioners

AKA trashy, low-budget You're Next remake.

Invasion on Chestnut Ridge
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUHc2eKiJ9Y

This was originally released as part of Amazon's Small Town Monsters series in October 2017, but it's just now getting its own wide VOD release. I wanted to bring more attention to it as someone deeply interested in happenings like this one.

Remothered: Tormented Fathers
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdj3YPilUP0

This Clock Tower spiritual successor has been a long time coming, and it gives me the chills to think the release is now so soon! The game looks absolutely terrifying and could very well be horror game of the year already.

The Housemaid
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MidNejRU_fY

Originally released in Vietnam in 2016, The Housemaid is seeing a VOD release this February. It doesn't look like the most original movie but it's still good to some Vietnamese horror films getting made.
