Skyrim, Witcher 3, FF15

I'm getting the impression that RPGs may not be the genre for you lol

My favorite genre. Ones with shitty gameplay I can only play for so long.

Case in point, I forgot to include Tales of Berseria. That one was painful to put down. Loved everything about it outside of the mind numbing combat.

I can only think that you must have got yourself too bogged down with sidequests-keeping in mind that all RPG sidequests are either kill this or find that so it shouldn't be anything new if you've been playing RPGs a while.
Skyrim's sidequests felt like they were fairly dull outside of the guild storylines, I'll give you that but otherwise it was mostly decent and Witcher 3 was pretty well written throughout so I didn't ever get bored with those.
FFXV wasn't a complete failure, but I wasn't super impressed with it and just carried on with the main story for the most part and haven't gone back to it after that woeful ending so I hear you on that one.

I played enough Skyrim to Master the thieves guild and max my sneak. Playing stealth was fun. It masked the horrendous combat. After I maxed it, the game was broken, too easy. And I didnt feel like reseting my stats, so I quit. No interest at all in the main quest. Played about 100 hours tho.

Witcher had an interesting world, but it was my first Witcher experience. So the lore I didnt know much about and the main character was bland (yes, I know he is supposed to be that way, doesnt make him any less boring). What killed it was the controls/combat. He moved like a Resident Evil character, and the combat was literally using 2 weapons (that do the same thing) and 1 useful magic spell while dealing with floaty, unresponsive combat. Even on hardest difficulty it was not fun to play. Stopped after 30+ hours.

FF15 i really wanted to like. It looked much better than FF13. It wasnt. It was an absolute train wreck. Some of the worst combat in any game I have ever played for startrers. Story telling was awful, open world was empty with only the rare fetch quest available, etc. Again, 30+ hours was all I could stand. No redeeming qualitities in this one aside from the visual quality (mostly of the food, because the art design was shit as well).

Tales of Berseria was fantastic all around except for the combat. From what I hear the combat was an improvement from previous Tales games, which is baffling. Even on hardest difficulty you can just hold down a button to win 90% of battles. About 25 hours in I was just really dreading combat because it was just a waste of time, couldnt do it anymore.

State of Decay

On paper it's everything I've wanted from a zombie game.

- Huge open world
- Numerous weapons/vehicles
- Focus on survival more than action
- Community-building functions

However the community building was a larger part of the game than I anticipated.

My first hour or so into the game I'm stuck in a safe zone (and I'm now the leader apparently) with numerous sick people inside, food running out, a night that lasted weirdly long, and zombies clawing at/massing outside the walls.

Eventually I put it down because I wasn't having fun, I was actually getting fucking stressed out over shit in it.

State of Decay is a very short game that's intended to be replayed a whole lot to explore different strategies.

Left 4 Dead 1 & 2 despite my kids love both games and I get dragged into playing with them.
Shadow of Mordor....was really pumped with the opening story and your background and motivation, but a few hours into it, I had no motivation to pursue the quest and just did side quests until I got bored of that
Dishonered.....this probably greatly hinged on it being a first person stealth game
Lost World 1-3....they seem like amazing games every time each one comes out, but then I just get bored with them really fast. I couldn't even say why really. Maybe just a boring story?

I can go back and play old platformers because 2D>3D, in particular Mario just seems to be rehashing the same thing in a different setting. And so it gets old quick.

Too many to name but here's a few.

Beetlejuice(NES) - Got towards the end and encountered a game-breaking bug of sorts. I lacked a key or something and couldn't progress. It was either stop playing or start the game all over again.

Full Throttle - There are these Road Rash like, combat sequences, that are just bad and frustrating.

More recently... Metroid: Samus Returns - Mainly because I suck at the combat.

Got it at like 33% off on the Thanksgiving sale, but it would have been worth the full price. Game took me around 25 hours to beat. Could have been shorter but I tried to explore as much as possible instead of rushing through the main story.

Blade Kitten. Or was it Kitten Blade? I dont think I hated it, I just dropped it and never went back. I recall the cutscenes being exactly what youd expect from a Krome Studios game if youve played Ty.

I didnt even get nearly halfway through Super Mystery Dungeon. Maybe had I been able to tolerate the beginning just a little more I could have reached the fabled good part.

Speaking of Pokmon, theres also Pokmon Ranger: Shadows of Almia. Never could beat that damn Drapion.

Space Channel 5 Part 2. Im to blame here, that game is HARD.

I quit at whichever the one on one fight against him was. Haven't touched the game in about 15 years now. Likely wouldn't have been so bad if I hadn't spent a ton of time leveling up my characters at that point. But the hero? I had him mostly as mage/support jobs so my physical abilities were almost non-existant.

Yeah, that sucks. That makes it impossible to win it. Understandable. The rooftop right after is pretty rough too. You can lose without even getting a turn, lol.

Ive actually been craving this game big time again lately, may buy it on the PlayStore for my Droid. The War of the Lions version has some excellent hand drawn cutscenes added and a better translation. Best time to give it another try!

Well, the causes of your problems are fairly obvious-playing everything but the main quest for whatever reason until you're over it and not playing the first 2 parts of a 3 part series will always leave you out of step with the characters etc. although arguably, you got your $ worth out of Skyrim in the end lol
This makes me curious, what RPGs have you actually played through the main quest of or thought the sidequests weren't tedious?

Skyrim, lol. Fallout 3 comes to mind. Witcher 3 had great side missions too, its just the combat wasnt compelling enough.

As long as the gameplay is fun, I can deal with fetch quests and such. I just didnt like the gameplay in FF15 at all, so going to collect frogs and engaging in the combat along the way was just double the boredom.
