That's a common reaction and it's a large reason that route isn't well liked because you have to spend most of it with Ryou instead of Kyou.

Yeah, I like that episode a lot, too. It may be rushed, but it rushes it by cutting out a lot of the Ryou stuff, so it's a "fine" kind of rushed.

I have escaped the darkness that is the Xenoblade 2 Rare Blade grind. It wasn't easy. Especially since the game started pulling all the stops to prevent me from breaking free of its clutches.

According to the Blade Album I now have all the Rare Blades. This took more grinding for cores than I anticipated. or ever wanted. My next core pull session rivaled my 1/105 one. It got 3, but it was something like 140 cores with a higher number and proportion of Rares used, as well as the first time I ever used Legendaries all game. After that ~the grind~ began since that exhausted the cores I had built up naturally since the last time. At first it went "okay." All until I was down to one left. (It turned out to be Adenine.) There was like a 72% chance the game detected I was one away and decided to activate Troll Mode. I didn't keep track of the exact number, but in my quest to get that last damn Rare Blade it took something like 35 Legendary Cores and 100 Rare Cores. (I had given up on Normal Cores at this point, judging it a waste of time.) But finally it happened. It's over. It's finally over.

and then began the blade trust grind (you will (not) recall that way earlier, in a brighter, more naive time where i had not learned of the darkness of rare blades, that i said i was thinking the affinity chart grind was worse than the rare blade grind. oh how silly.)

This ultimately amounts to just literally sitting in front of the same menu and just pressing A a million times, buying more items from a store when I run out. Despite ostensibly being the more mindless, less interactive, and seemingly tedious task... after the Rare Blade nonsense it almost feels calming. There's no RNG and you can watch the number approach the value it needs. I'm not technically done with this yet, but it almost is. Then I can finally go back to talking to NPCs and Quests. oh and the story too i guess. some day. >_>

If that happens I just change to some item that doesn't do that. I was worried that I'd run into a case where that wouldn't be feasible, but I've been lucky so far. It may be less efficient from a gold standpoint, but I'm reasoning (perhaps incorrectly) that time-wise it works out.

The basic ones can sometimes feel overly simplistic, but I've noticed that a lot of the time as the difficulty ramps up it becomes less about the puzzles being difficult and more about being directionless. The easier ones point you in a direction to start tackling the room, while the tougher ones just throw you in with nothing to go on.

I think of Zero Escape before Danganronpa when it comes to Escape Rooms!

speaking of which I need to get that Zero Escape compilation they came out with one of these days because I've somehow lost or misplaced my copy of 999

plus I think Quinton would like those games and he'd be much more likely to play them on PS4 than on a handheld because a game apparently has to be Trails in the Sky caliber for him to get through a handheld game

In Gankutsuou, Haydee exposes the truth about Fernand, and Franz gains Noirtier's memories from a pen he kept hidden inside his artificial arm, which was my favorite scene in the book. Edmond sends Albert back to Earth to face the truth about his family, but he lashes out against what he perceives to be the rise of fake news (SAD). However, Mercedes sets the record straight, but he still can't handle the truth. Franz deduces that the Count of Monte Cristo is Edmond Dantes. They've really expanded this dude's role in the show, huh.

also man the music in this show is so good

In Tsukigakirei, this Chinatsu girl is a terrible friend, seriously. Major props to Kotaro though for going public with their relationship to the guy all of Akane's friends were trying to set her up with. Also, the bonus shorts where all the girls warm up to the teacher were great. By the way, it's kinda weird that there's a dude named Roman in a show full of otherwise very Japanese names. It's a cool name though. I went to college with a guy named Roman. His brother has a daughter named Vanille, and I know he's an FF fan, so I don't think that's a coincidence.

although if I were to have a daughter named after a video game character I'd go with Presea or Ashelia personally

Okay, I finished the "A Silent Voice" manga. Man, that was...really powerful. Like, if you read manga and you enjoy stuff that hits you hard and challenges you to think about things from a different perspective, then I can't recommend this highly enough. It almost felt...Clannad-esque in a way. It's just a wonderful story about struggling to overcome the weight of your past to change your future, as well as the value in learning to listen to what people mean and not only hearing what they say.

I looked up the showings for the English dub for the movie next month and none of them are near me, sadly. Plus, I'm going to be very busy that weekend anyway, so I probably wouldn't have time regardless. I'll just have to find the movie somewhere else, even if that means buying it. I saw that they cast an actual deaf actress to play Shoko, which is really, really cool.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfK6UgLra7g

There's a trailer for it, if anyone's interested in getting a better idea of it. It's done by KyoAni, so you know it's going to look incredible.

Anyway, character rankings!

Shoya > Shoko > Yuzuru > Ueno > Miyako > Sahara > Yaeko > Nagatsuka > Mashiba > Kawai

And a new addition to the female character rankings:

Nagato > Yakumo > Kurisu > Chizuru > Yukiko > Aqua > Makoto > Shoko > Mitsuru > Yui > Takano > Yachiyo > Shiori > Eru > Wagatsuma > Ritsu > Akane > Pepper > Amy > Rin > Namine > Peach > Botan > Yurippe > Mikasa > Eureka > Art3mis > Valentine > Zelda > Vera > Elizabeth > Cora > Kotori

I actually started reading the manga also, though I'm not too far yet. (It's more or less the same as far as I know, though I believe there is one plotline that got cut from the movie. Don't remember specifically what it was though as of now)

One thing I will say about the movie as compared to the manga is that it does a really good job actually showing the communication gap that exists between Shouko and everyone else. Not that the manga has done it poorly so far--far from it--but now matter how skilled a writer you are there's a difference between reading words on a page and hearing words spoken. And that's a distinction that's significant for this story in particular. Also the music/sound design is...really good, though my memory of the specifics is fading and I'd need to watch it again to describe that at any level of detail.

On the other side of the coin though the manga is doing a noticeably better job characterizing Shoya and allowing you to really get inside his head. Interesting (though admittedly not that surprising) how the different mediums emphasize different aspects of the story. Either way though the story is fantastic in both forms.

I more or less agree with the Clannad comparison. It fits pretty well, though it might give the wrong impression to someone who hasn't seen/read A Silent Voice, depending on what aspects of Clannad they think you're comparing to.

Also Miyako best anime mom by a country mile tbh. I'd say she should be higher on your character rankings...but I don't even think I'm willing to move her above anyone other than Ueno. The top 3 are all so good.

From what I'm reading, them all getting together to make a film gets cut out of the movie, but I could honestly see them managing to make it work without that. It's mostly a background event in the manga that rarely gets the spotlight.

Yeah, she's awesome. It's a pretty strong top 5 for me. Ueno's just such a great foil to both main characters, and I love me some foils.

Yeah, I can imagine the impact would be stronger in film. Silence speaks volumes in an audio/visual medium. They make it work effectively in the manga when she actually tries to speak and people have a hard time understanding her though.

Clannad VN spoilers

I finished the Kyou route, and then the Ryou route (not a whole lot to say about that one, it was basically just the Kyou route but it ended a week earlier). I thought the situation those three found themselves in was pretty heartfelt. I was impressed at how none of them were really to blame. Tomoya didn't know how he felt at first, Kyou was just trying to do the right thing for her sister, and... well, I guess Ryou was ignoring how Kyou felt but I don't hold that against her. She had as much right to go after for the person she likes as anyone else does. Anyway, it was sad watching Ryou realize who Tomoya truly loved but at the same time it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. She took it rather well all things considered. I also enjoyed the confession scene with a disguised Kyou, and the post-credits scenes of the two of them in a relationship. It finally helped me understand what you guys were saying about wanting more Kyou in the Kyou route. I wanted more scenes of the two of them together!

Next route: I discover who the hell Kappei is, I don't think I've met them.

that's a rather generous view of Ryou

Kyou liked him first, Ryou knew she liked him, and she let her sister fall on her sword for her own gain when she knew her Kyou would never do that to her. But I've learned "selfishness" isn't really one of your turnoffs so whatever...!

Also, fun fact: Kappei is the only character from the VN who isn't in the anime so Quinton has no idea who he is either
