Now obviously if its dented to hell and back or dented in such a way it would give your can opener problems, thats fine.

but I see people refuse to buy cans with minor dents in them that dont affect anything. i dont really understand why.

i remember if a can was dented, you usually got a little discount for it, so people would purposely dent them and then stores stopped offering that discount because of it

it's a fucking 30 cent can of corn, do you really need it seven cents cheaper?

I was always told that the dents can release toxic chemicals into the drink/food. Idk how or if there is any merit to that tho lol, just one of those things i thought growing up

I've heard that if the can is bloated it can cause botulism.

Perhaps that's what they meant?

yeah, if the can is bloated, then there's actual issues with the food inside, as it's gone bad.

but a dent literally cannot do anything but make the can look like it has a dent in it. a dent literally can't alter the chemistry of whatever has a dent in it to create toxins that'll go into the food. it's a fucking dent.

I remember when i worked at a grocery store, someone tried to get a discount on a bag of sugar they ripped open. I didnt seem them do it, but we refused to sell it, safety reasons and such and since we couldnt lrove they were the ones that ripped it, we couldnt charge them

Seven cents of a 30 cent can of corn is almost 25% off man.

Yeah, it's only 7 cents, but spending 25% less on food is good, even if your probably only spending freaking $10 a week if your bothering to dent cans lol.

I admit, I don't buy dented cans. Not because of any fear it messes the food up, but because of aesthetics.

Botulism, caused by the bacteria clostridium botulinum, occurs when a dent or damage to a can creates even a pinhole-size opening. The mixture of air and moisture from the food within the can spurs growth of the bacteria, and the food becomes contaminated.

If I dented a can inadvertently before using it, then I won't throw it out, but I will probably use it first before a non-dented one.

I am NOT buying a dented can though, I have no idea why it is dented or if it is even safe to eat anymore.

Can't think of anything I buy that's even in a can, but if I was given two cans that were the exact same (price, type, etc) with the only difference being one is dented and the other isn't, I'd choose the not damaged one.

If they were all dented but I wanted to buy it, then I'd still buy it with just a little dint. If it looked caved in then no.

I'm that guy that gets something from the bottom of the stack and reaches behind the stuff in front to get the product less people have touched. I also look over the products to see which one in the best of all of them.

In super markets, the stuff in the back usually expires later.

But if you had a the choice between a dented can, and a non dented can, why would you choose the dented one? Is putting down the dented can and getting a not dented one too much of a waste of your time?

When I worked in restaurants, we had to return any dented cans to our vendors and get a refund, or throw them away if the return period was too late.

Idk why we did that, but the health inspectors marked us down for having a dented can at one job. I guess there must be some reason...

Because someone has to buy it, no need to waste perfectly good food. Same thing with the expiration dates. Do you really need three months to eat your box of cheez its?

It very well could be. You don't know if the can has a micro perforation that has allowed the food to come into contact with air. Introducing air to food in cans and eating the results is a recipe for sickness or death

You go ahead and gamble on dented cans.

Most food waste (restaurants and food service places excluded) happens in the home. People let food spoil or toss things like mad. I eat what I buy, and I don't buy dented cans. If I dent one of my own cans I use it that day so it's not wasted. But a random dented can on a shelf is not going in my shopping cart.

God what a waste of perfectly good food.

You should set an example for everyone else by going to the supermarket and purposely buying all the damaged cans and almost expired food and avoid the undamaged cans and fresh food.

Otherwise the starving kids in Africa will still not have food but people can talk about how other people are wasting it in comparison.

Been "gambling" for years. I purposely buy the dented cans.

Not that difficult to see a bulging can.

Yes. Anybody would. But normally, dented can cost less. Would you buy it at 25% or 50% off? Or at any discount?
