2017 was a pretty good year for comedy. However, one show stand above the rest. It's Dragon Maid. It looked like for a while that Kyoto animation had almost all but abandoned slice of life style comedy. But they came back full force with this one. Truth is Kyoto animation is such a powerhouse studio that almost every show they create is good and a lot of them great. Much of this is because they are one of the rare fully in house production studios but this is for the show in question. If you're wondering why they don't win studio of the year... they do like a show a year so.

Dragon Maid though is just incredible fun to watch. The animation is wonderful and while the overall cast is not quite as strong as some front runners in the category, the big names like Kanna and Tooru really push the show into the top. It's really that the show combines not only comedy, but decent development and a slew of touching moments to become a complete package, which pulls it above the other shows vying in the category.

Roba
The concept of a dragon becoming a maid is inherently funny and Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid certainly does that premise justice. While following the daily lives of Kobayashi and her various dragon friends, even familiar situations often streched into hilarious absurdity.

Haha, I've always been hard on Konosuba. Mainly due to a dislike of Kazuma and Aqua being the only sympathetic character. The other two picks are great though! GLT was my top pick.

but as Kokoro said, Dragon Maid was the best combo of Comedy and Slice of Life and made a great total package

I should have given Konosuba my +1 for AotY. If I was being TOTALLY honest maybe my +3 or +5? I've just always had a bias against voting for comedies in the main AotY category, kind of just something I have to get over. The series as a whole is definitely the funniest anime I've ever seen, though a couple episodes do miss.

I already said a lot about it in the anime topic, but GLT is on my list of top anime of all time and is the easy +5 here. The other 2 are pretty fun romcoms I guess. Enjoyed them a lot but don't have a lot to say about them.

I wish I actually found the jokes in Dragon Maid funny, because I did really like the character development side of things.

When you have a first season thats as good as Attack on Titans original 25-episode run, it can be difficult to live up to. Season 2 had massive hype going in. The wait between seasons 1 and 2 was excruciatingly long for me, and I didnt even watch the first season until years after it aired! At first, I was somewhat skeptical. For about half the show, it feels decent, but never really hits the high that season one held almost constantly. But around when the battle on the tower begins, things heat up quickly. Were treated to some great action, insane plot twists, and wonderfully drawn despair faces. For the last four or five episodes, Titan 2 may even surpass the highs of season one. Its difficult, and honestly unimportant, to compare the quality of such amazing events.

I don't think the fact that Kazuma is a jerk (which is true) has anything to do with whether or not I view Aqua as sympathetic.

I basically don't think anyone in Konosuba is sympathetic, and I'd even argue that itself is what most the humor in the show is based off of.

I don't think the fact that Kazuma is a jerk (which is true) has anything to do with whether or not I view Aqua as sympathetic.

I basically don't think anyone in Konosuba is sympathetic, and I'd even argue that itself is what most the humor in the show is based off of.

It's basically Issekai Seinfeld.

I dont have Prime. I dont use Amazon much in general. Welp second show I was gonna pick out is Amazon only too lmao this is going well so far. Second choice was Land of the Lustrous

As I've said before, almost all of the best shows of 2017 were Amazon exclusive, lol. You're not gonna have any luck with Re:Creators, either.

It's not secret that I really don't like the fate series. So whenever I go into a show I'm like "maybe this oen won't suck?" so to this to make it onto my list... means it did something so awful. I don't eve know where to begin here. Like I didn't even watch all of this (mid season drop) but overall it's just boring. Too bloated. Too much stuff going on. Not sure who I should be paying attention too, rooting for, no real stand out characters (besides like moe berserker). Not even that many great fights.

Went to the shows I dropped. I really like the first couple episodes of Re:Creators but then it didn't really go in the direction I was hoping and it just became boring. Music was nice though.

I watched the Magus Bridge OVA's beforehand and liked that but the series was also just kinda boring.

My prerequisites for most disappointing were that I had to think they'd be good in the first place and then they needed to be not bad. These aren't my least favorite, there are a few I'd rank below them, but these disappointed me more because of higher expectations.

Restaurant to Another World was my first 'hey this random anime looks awesome' and then it was the second-worst anime I've ever seen. I still don't understand the appeal of Ancient Magus' Bride (I guess the latest episode was finally approaching average but I didn't know that was coming when I sent this). I had really high hopes for LotL and, while it was good, also a letdown in a lot of ways.

Any semicolon series that sucks will make this list.

Zodiac War was Nisio and had a very, very promising start, before flopping and crashing to one of the more hilarious extremes I've ever seen.

Apocrypha was just painfully uninteresting, with bland action and bog standard presentation. It is unfair to compare it to Ufotable, but you can't just come out swinging with Fate series that looks "normal good", you to have a unique stamp if you wanna stand out, instead of looking "like Ufotable but worse". The trailer for Last Encore looks better than anything I saw in the first half of Apocrypha because it at least clearly has that SHAFT presentation which Fate hasn't done before. Apocrypha is just a painfully standard "this looks good" anime with no voice.

Also it was just kind if boring, other than Sisigo, Mordred, and Astolpho. The biggest Fate cast ever and almost none of them were any good. The homunculus guy I can't bother to remember the name of was basically a non-character, and I was shocked to find that Jeanne, one of the most recognizable non-primary series Fate characters around, was one of the most painfully uninteresting characters I can remember in a good long while.

It's important to mention this is "most disappointing" and not necessarily worst shows. That means that instead of going to shows that are just straight-up bad, I'm more likely to select shows that have high potential but then don't follow through with it for one reason or another. In that light and given previous comments I've made on Land of the Lustrous, it probably makes sense why I selected that one. March Comes in Like a Lion maybe shouldn't be on here, but I really didn't like the first couple episodes especially compared to how much I liked the first half of season 1. The Masamune choice is probably straightforward and I'd prefer not to risk recovering any repressed memories by talking about it.

Oh and I also realized I never listed my votes for best drama/action.

I could see myself liking Apocrypha for Mordred and Jeanne. The only other character I know of in it is Astolpho who I would literally never care about

Masamune was legitimately 75% really good and 25% mediocre so I wouldn't classify it as excessively disappointing.

I liked a lot of shows that year, so not everything I found disappointing I disliked, but I gave +5 to Dragon Maid, +3 to Fate/Apocrypha, and +1 to Princess Principal.

I was disappointed and frustrated by Dragon Maid as I felt it went in a bad direction and got stale quickly. KyoAni has been very hit or miss recently, and I was just sad that I ended up not that happy with the show as I still like the studio. I dropped Fate/Apocrypha 5 episodes in as I realized that I just hated the story and all the main characters. Princess Principal I generally liked, but the ending was a bit weak still, so that was a disappointment.

Princess Principal's ending would be a bit weak of this was an adaptation with a potential future season.

Being an original story, it doesn't really have an excuse for that trash nothing ending. Just totally salted the whole show for me.

Season 3 will cover what Ive always heard referred to as Attack on Politics. I remember getting to this point in the manga and wondering when it was supposed to get bad, but it never happened. I loved the plot and the fights, even if there were a lack of titans. And we dont have to wait another 4 years! I cant wait.
