I agree I don't like this voting format.

I don't think "best moment" is a good idea. Not only because of spoiler issues, but given the number of possibilities I think votes will be split too much for it to mean a whole lot.

I definitely think there should be a best music category.

I would say it'd have to count as it released in Japan on BD. Granted, I couldn't tell you if that were to make it eligible without doing a little bit of research, but just to give you an idea.

Thought someone else might want to write about Your Name so I did Silent Voice lol. Still both amazing movies, basically a coin flip for which I prefer, and Kizu was fantastic as well.

Dragon Maid and Owari were close. Magus Bride obviously suffered from not finishing, but I won't forget it for next year...!

Personally I think having best art/animation is a good category compromise since people usually don't judge just one or the other. I'd be perfectly happy with the voting format changing.

Eh, these results are kinda worse IMO. Konosuba as the only comedy on the list, ACCA getting at all, Rakugo Shinju getting votes despite its ending... Titan S2 and ReCreators missing out pretty lame as well. And they didn't even have the decency to give MIA the win!

Aha. Honestly, I could kinda see it being the opposite with MIA or LotL, since a fair number of people thought the early parts of those shows were the weakest (and might've dropped them if watching while airing). I still managed to watch 50 series from 2017...

I feel like people would pick them back up once word of mouth started coming in, even if they had.

After reviewing the year I can say without a doubt that I would not have watched 10 shows in 2017 if I was waiting until they were over.

I'm really not sure on Film, because I only included it due to having two MASSIVE hits this year. Still, there's probably enough variety to keep it a niche award, like Battle.

Combining art and animation might be the best way to handle it. I do think there's some shows that fare significantly better in one category, but they mostly go pretty hand-in-hand.

I mean I don't view watching as many shows as possible as an inherently good thing. I'm just going to watch what I want when I want to watch it.

As a matter of fact I should probably wait to watch shows more often. It's a bit dependent on genre, but I think more often than not I enjoy watching shows all at once. I just don't have the self-restraint to commit to that when there's a show airing I know I'm going to like.

I think they're both kind of fun but I could see why they would be removed. Studio in particular I think is cool but you need to have watched a bunch for that to have a real meaning, and when it gets that meaning it's rewarding. But it takes a lot to get to that.

I'm actually super against combining these, as I've said in years past. Last year especially I thought it ended up really fucking with the results. To me it's no different than combining Best Soundtrack and Best OP/ED.

Most of the shows I watch airing are shows I wouldn't bother watching if they weren't. So many of my favorites don't really get a ton of WOM recognition, and I wouldn't have seen some great stuff like Scum's Wish from this year.

Oh one other suggestion for the awards.

Under the current format I think films should have been eligible for stuff like best character or best vocal performance--where you aren't giving the award to the show itself. I also think there's a reasonable argument to be made for them being eligible for every category (other than overall AotY possibly), though I'm a bit more on the fence about that.

It may have been the year before that. I can't ACTUALLY remember the specific issue, sadly. I just remember being super annoyed after the results came in and arguing about it for a long time, as I tend to do.

Well, uh, people can watch anime the way they want. I'm just saying that people waiting to watch anime until they finish didn't cost LotL the win is all.

As for art/animation: I think a lot of people voted based on animation anyway. Especially with LotL, the animation was a lot more impressive than the art there.

I think films have unfair advantages in categories that can be determined by budget. Things like art, OP/ED, and vocal performance. I just kinda chucked in Best Film last second without thinking about the blanket ban in place, and then we just got this weird rule about films only being eligible in one category, which is silly, yes. It's just a difficult grey area, because I want things to be fair, but I don't want to do so by banning things, which I unfortunately did.

I would need to watch way more than that if I want to avoid making my Studio of the Year nominations just a mirror of my Anime of the Year nominations.

Yeah, which is why I'm saying a combination where you vote as you please would be ideal. It's fine to vote both for MIA due to its art and LotL for its animation in the same category. Just "best visuals" is best IMO.

I don't exactly disagree with that. Two of my three nominations went to studios that I had only seen one anime from. The third went to a studio were I only really liked one of their three series that I watched. The studio I watched 6 series from got nothing. It's more like I don't feel like I've seen a large enough percentage of a studio's output to judge them. It is sort of like voting on Anime of the Year when a person has only seen 2 or 3 episodes from each show. But even then you can sort of get a feel for an anime from a few episodes while one series done by a studio can be vastly different than another.

After 9 episodes if Dragon Maid was comedy of the year it must have been a super weak year for comedy. I know it was grouped with SoL which it is better at, but still. There hasnt been too much comedy or maybe most of it just hasnt been that funny

It was literally best comedy/sol.

That's like saying an action show shouldn't win the best drama/action cause it had no drama. not the point of the category (even if I think the categories should be separate)

I certainly wouldn't say Maidragon was the funniest show of the year (even, say, Aho Girl made me laugh more), though it did have some pretty funny parts (mostly involving Riko/Kanna/Fafnir). But yeah, it was great at slice of life in general.

I thought Dragon Maid was consistently funny (barring maybe an episode or two) but I also found a lot of humor inherent to the premise.

The actual funniest anime of 2017 was Gabriel Dropout, though.

....Really? The part I expect the anime will cover was so awful that I permanently dropped the manga. I'm expecting it to be 2018's biggest shit show, and I'm pretty sad we're dropping most Dissapointing because of it. I would consider this stretch of the manga "hilarious".

It used to be worse show, but why would people go out of their way to finish a lot of bad shows.

To me this has always been more of a year in review thing. We had hopes and some delivered, we had surprises and some didn't pan out.

I would keep Most Dissapointing but also add Best Surprise. I don't think negative awards should be shunned, they can be fun too. Worst character is something I'd like to see, for example.

Worst show doesn't really work, though, as you've said.

I'd like to see more out there awards in general, like some of the stuff Giant Bomb does. No harm in it.
