Most games these days sell the majority near release date. Halo 3 was the top selling game of that year. For that Christmas season everyone was all about Halo 3 and the Xbox 360. That's a massive advantage to have. People who wanted to buy a PS3 would be missing out on Halo 3 (and at that point they were paying significantly more). This increases the userbase of the 360. This gave the console a huge boost of momentum. This leads to more people buying the 360 because it's the more popular console and it's what their friends play. PS4 is a bit unique in that it didn't really need a heavy hitting exclusive because the Xbox One fumbled so bad and people were ready for a next gen console. It kinda just won by default. Most consoles rely on a heavy hitter to really change the tide. Switch is the most recent example. They launched a new Xbox One last year and nobody talked about a single Xbox One exclusive. What is supposed to entice people this many years in? At this point if they want to change the tide they need to convert people who play on PS4.
