Lets say that someone is riding their bike in the only lane that's possible to drive in(it's a one way lane) and they are holding up traffic.

Is it considered a douche bag move to honk your horn at them?

No.

It's fucking stupid how cyclists are taking over the streets. If there is a one lane road and two perfectly good sidewalks in a long, straight street, why can't the bicycle go riding at 1 MPH on the sidewalk? Noooooooooooooooo they have to ride at 1 MPH on the main road, slowing everybody down, until his majesty raises his arm looking like a chicken with an itch and then turns right or left on a second's notice.

Roads were paved for cars, not bicycles, deal with it. There is no reason they can't use a sidewalk.

Except for the law stating that sidewalks aren't for bicycles. I don't know about the US, but here anyone over 10 years old riding a bike on the sidewalk could potentially be fined. But we also have dedicated lanes inbetween the road and sidewalk here in most places

So pretty much the same. I've never been fined even though I hopped on the sidewalk in front of a cop dozens of times. All it takes is one having a bad day though.
Bicycles are also a much more common means of transportation here.

fenderbender321 posted...
And it should be legal and we should encourage bicyclists to ride on sidewalks. They just don't fit on roads, even when there are bike lanes.

Like when you take a right turn and aren't required to stop first, there could be a bicyclist riding on the bike lane to your right that smacks into you, but you were too busy having to pay attention to pedestrians and other cars to notice.

Just move bikes to the sidewalk. Problem solved.

Or just learn to look right before making a right turn. It's easy to blame others for being a shitty driver.

Unless it's some sort of magic bike that appears out of nowhere, you should have passed it as you approached the intersection and therefore would be aware that he is to your right as you prepare to make your turn

No. Horns are there to alert other people to various things. When a bicyclist chooses to get on the city streets (or six inches away from them), he is subject to EVERY law that drivers are.

This happens too often where I live, and more often than not, the courts side with the motorist. Some cyclists treat the city streets like their personal playground. Never mind the car that I'm making go 10mph, I have every right to merge in the roundabout without looking!

I think it should be a misdemeanor crime to ride your bike in certain weather conditions.

I didn't read the whole topic, but honking is not the answer.

Bikers have a holier-than-thou mentality (especially if they have one of those skinny-wheel bikes and are covered in spandex) and they do not give a fuck about how much of the road they're taking. Because they know if they get hit, they get paid. It's a win-win for them. They pedal leisurely and own the road, or they get hit and the driver is at fault.

Should the biker have made an attempt to get over? Absolutely. They should be as close to the curb as they can (assuming there is no bike lane). Do I hate it? Absolutely. But honking does also make you a scumbag, even if the biker is being a scumbag as well (especially if they are at least trying to make an honest effort to let traffic pass).

For sure. But the reality is that it's a high-risk situation for a collision due to the unusual nature of having to deal with a bicyclist that is harder to see and moving at a speed that is difficult to determine and anticipate. For drivers, 99% of the time when they turn right, they don't have to worry about vehicles simultaneously passing them on the right, so force of habit comes into play as well.

Maybe look before you turn like you're meant to instead of blaming bad habits

Well said.

Streets weren't designed for bikes. Do you want to turn biking into a legit for of transportation? AWESOME! Then add real biking roads somewhere. In the last couple years they have been painting a dumbass lane taking space from streets meant for cars and calling that a bike lane, that shit won't fly.

I was going down a "main-street" little area where the speed limit is like 25, there are parked cars on the street, lots of foot traffic on the sidewalks, and there's little room for drivers. I eventually was able to pass this biker when nobody was in the oncoming traffic lane, after going like 10mph behind this biker because there was no way to pass.

I go on my way for a short while until I hit a red light, and this mother fucker PULLS UP BETWEEN MY CAR AND THE STREET PARKED CARS TO PASS ME (and the car in front of me) AND WE HAD TO FUCKING PASS HIM ALL OVER AGAIN

GOD that was infuriating

in the us? For real?

Yes, but only a shitty cop would actually enforce it.

that's really stupid. So are they supposed to bike on the streets, where cars drive?!

So they are supposed to bike on the sidewalk at speeds of 10-20 MPH, where people and children walk? That's why there are dedicated lanes. And if there aren't, it's up to both the driver and cyclist to not be assholes and take each other into consideration.
As a driver, if you see a bike, limit your speed. As a cyclist, try to stay to the side and if you hear a car behind you, move aside.

Or you bike on biking trails and let cars use the streets mean for them.

Streets are nice and flat and I'd love to play catch with my friends there, but I don't do that, there are parks for that

A bicycle is a means of transportation, not just something people use for exercise or leisure. As such, that's a terrible analogy you tried to make.
"Someone who drives a bike" is not synonymous to "asshole who rides in the middle of the road wearing bike shorts"

Most times I see bikers in the street it's actually this.

Oh, it's a thing for sure. I live in Europe where these assholes thrive due to popularity of Tour de France and such. But there's also a ton of people here that use bikes for everyday transportation and many of those are considerate enough.
I get the frustration of wanting to get somewhere fast and not being able to pass a slow-moving bike. I've been on both sides of this situation hundreds of times.
It all boils down to both parties being considerate and courteous of others using the road. Sadly there are a vast number of entitled pricks using the very same road as this topic shows.
