Veganism isn't really that healthy as you don't get nearly enough vitamins or things like protean.

How many people in North America do you know of that have died of protein deficiency?

Don't eat like crap and you won't be protein or vitamin deficient, same as any kind of food intake. My diet has vitamins & minerals in spades with plenty of protein. Beans & Lentils are the real MVP

i just ate most of a head of cauliflower. only time will tell what a bad idea that was. delicious and satisfying tho

anyone eating vegan, I suggest a pressure cooker for easy vegetable steaming. I did 5 pounds of potatoes in less time than it took to wash and scrub them all, came out as nice as baked spuds.

If you're worried about saving plant lives for the first time in your life, eating vegan saves more plants overall

As someone who makes a conscious effort to eat around 150g of protein a day as recommended by MyFitnessPal, how might I do this on a vegan diet? In addition, I feel that my enjoyment for meat is largely due to the resultant flavor profile associated with the Maillard reaction. How might I reproduce this flavor profile using vegan cooking techniques?

Beans, lentils, peas, whole grains, nuts... Things like seitan or tofu or edamame. Plus there's vegan protein powders and supplements. There's so many vegan athletes these days including powerlifting champions. It's clearly possible.

You can get the maillard reaction from plants. It's easier than with meat. Brown things when cooking. Toast your grains before cooking. I get my tofu to do the maillard reaction when cooking

Im willing to try it out and clearly see the potential benefits. I have also seen some vegan bodybuilders. I dont have an aversion to a plants only diet, and my family has a history of heart disease. Did you just slowly switch or was it an overnight thing for you? Thanks for your insight.

Thanks for asking about it, it's awesome to see more people interested.

I personally went overnight. Something clicked for me and it felt wrong to keep going. Since that was an ethical choice, I didn't feel like I could half ass it. Worked for me. Had a learning curve though.

Most people have an easier time transitioning slowly. Try making a few vegan meals a week and learn at least 10 recipes you like first. Here's one of my favorites that's really easy!

https://minimalistbaker.com/vegan-sloppy-joes/

And if you wanted to add more protein, I suggest getting textured vegetable protein. It's inexpensive, shelf stable, and you can rehydrate it for cooking in under 10 minutes. Adds protein and fiber to any dish that might use a ground meat texture. I use it in my sloppy joes, pasta sauce, tacos, etc.

I highly recommend the thug kitchen books for easy to understand vegan cooking. 101 is the newest book and the best introduction. The original book is great. Heard the veganomicon is wonderful and that's on my wish list too.

Good luck with it!

I eat tons of chickpeas, tofu, stuff like quinoa, PB sandwiches, and use a couple of protein powders (main one is a brand called Sun Warrior) as well as make protein bars following this: https://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/no-bake-peanut-butter-oatmeal-protein-bars

As far as the meat stuff, I'm in the exact same boat as you. So I tend to eat a lot of meat alternative products. My go-to foods are Gusta or Field Roast sausages, and then anything Gardein - they have a ground beef product that's great for stuff like tacos and fairly indistinguishable, as in I've fed it to people who eat meat without telling them it wasn't and they had no idea.

I'm in Canada though so if you're not there might be a difference in availability of brands. Though the US has some vegan burgers that I wish we had and are also supposed to be indistinguishable from the real thing.

Also some of those seitan recipes linked earlier ITT topic might work too

How do vegans generally feel about shellfish? Shrimp and clams and whatnot don't have the same capacity for thought as "higher" forms. They're more similar to insects and I don't see vegans having a ton of problems with killing something like an ant or mosquito

They're not vegan

Vegans also wouldn't eat insects

Personally I avoid killing any insects when possible. It's about harm reduction. If they're posing a danger to myself or others like mosquitoes with West Nile I will be a little more forceful about getting them out than something like a beetle or moth that can be taken outside

I see the argument, but I think the general consensus would be if you don't have to kill an animal you ought not to

I discovered the A & W Canada veggie deluxe burger can be made vegan. Sub for a sesame bun, no mayo ranch or cheese.

First fast food I've had since going vegan. It was good. Not going to be a regular thing but I'm really happy there are options.

Went grocery shopping today and was again surprised at hidden milk powder in food. One hummus variety had dairy. Hummus isn't even safe now
