Star Trek V

Rating: 39/100

There are a lot of lackluster episodes of Star Trek, and this is one that's just in film form. The religious overtones are extremely hamfisted, and really the only character that doesn't suffer from it is Bones. I know this was Shatner's real shot at Star Trek as a director, and I respect his desire to tell a different sort of Star Trek story, but it didn't work on the screen.

I liked Get Out, but it is far from Oscar-caliber. Lady Bird is Nothing Special, Darkest Hour was a poor man's The Crown, and The Post was a poor man's All the President's Men... there are some good films, but honestly I'm seeing serialized shows as the future of higher quality entertainment at this point.

Mad Max: Fury Road

Rating: 79/100

It serves as a great action movie, but at some point, I needed some dialogue and some real stakes. I stopped caring about the characters somewhere near the two-thirds mark because I just felt like I didn't know these people at all. Still, it was visually thrilling and reminiscent of a movie like The Getaway.

Green Arrow: Escape from Super Max

Rating: 90/100

It's like 13 years old and I've still yet to see a concept and plot outline for a superhero movie that comes near it since. It's a tonally fresh storyline that can introduce a lot of great characters quickly; it puts a premium on villains, allowing a universe to be built wrong-side first. Imagine a Cinematic Universe that's predicated on the notion that 'villains matter'. That's something really special. The set-up also would have worked well to supposedly introduce the New Gods in a very mysterious way as well as Amanda Waller as Amanda Waller (from what I saw). Honestly, DC trumps Marvel when it comes to villains, and this would have been a great way to separate DC from Marvel in a great way. Plus, Green Arrow is always a great underdog and a fun scrapper-type character without bows and arrows.

Ghostbusters

Rating: 84/100

I've always enjoyed Ghostbusters because the charisma of the leads is what makes the film tonally light. It's not really a traditional comedy. It doesn't try to go overboard with patter and stretch for punchlines. It's just a romp built on a foundation of funny people.

Foreign/independent animated films

Rating: 47/100

I find it very difficult to enjoy visual designs in foreign animated films since I have to follow the subtitles. And, often, the translation of a film loses some of the poetic flair of original dialogue - this makes a film lose some of its traction and feel goofy.

Mamma Mia

Rating: 58/100

I watch movies like this and wonder why people are so high on Meryl Streep. Sure, Brosnan was no vocal talent, but he really puts his heart into the role, and the results are actually entertaining. Firth and Baranski were quietly fantastic in their roles, but Streep really just came off as this vapid, dopey sort of flower child, and it's not the first time I've felt this way. Also, lest people ever forget, Mamma Mia opened #2 at the box office behind The Dark Knight's first weekend.
