Really likable cast and premise; I wish someone like Soderbergh had a hand in directing this film; otherwise I think this could have been a much more engaging flick. Redford, as always, is a treat.

It's Romeo and Juliet in early 90s rock music fashion; Lee was something really special in this movie, and he perfectly encapsulated the O'Barr comic series.

Of the caliber of a Blade Runner, Akira is a fantastic movie that embraces its tone and genre in order to convey a story with some real heft to it. Of the small amount of anime I've seen, it ranks near the top.

The Dark Knight

Rating: 100/100

One of my top five films of all time, The Dark Knight touches on civic philosophy in a quiet, understated way. Anchored by great performances throughout, I always feel the need to point out that it's the little things that make this movie work so well. Bill Fitchner wielding a shotgun and railing against the new breed of criminal at the top of the film. Tiny Lister's imposing presence on the prison ship. The word "laughter" being turned into "slaughter" with a single letter. The Bruce Wayne car accident being punctuated by a dry one-liner. So much of this film relies on larger exploration of broad concepts, but it's the attention to detail that let's the grander philosophy stand on a foundation of excellently crafted storytelling.

Contains complexity and simplicity simultaneously; complex enough to think about but simple enough to follow. The cast is just top-of-the-line. The visuals aren't exactly the most imaginative things ever, but they feel like it in the hands of Nolan. He gives the dream worlds just enough rope to be their own things without straying too far from reality so the film becomes nonsensical. The music is probably the most crucial part of this movie and it excels so well. It's really a treat that we get to live in a time where Chris Nolan makes movies.

I enjoy casting for properties with which I have a passion, but it feels like there aren't a ton of those. Like, I wouldn't enjoy fancasting a Shakespearean comedy. I'd rather someone just make a Shakespearean comedy and cast it themselves so I can watch it. But for comic-related stuff or sci fi stuff, I can become pretty absorbed.

I watched it about 6 years ago and I was struck by just how bad the acting in this movie was. Virtually everyone aside from the two leads deliver dismal performances. It feels like schlock that has been accepted by the mainstream for no discernible reason if you go solely by the acting, but I find the story to be a very unique subversion of a coming-of-age tale, so the plot saves the film somewhat.

Inglorious Basterds

Rating: 97/100

Another movie where the details make the film great. Of course I could rave about how the methodical pace of Hans Landa's character makes him a delightful villain, or why the variations on how to motion the number three make this film so great, but I want to focus on something no one ever mentions: the comedic timing of B.J. Novak. The one Basterd to survive, Novak's character has like two lines in the whole movie, and yet Tarantino went out and co-opted a great dry comedian to nail those lines. And the result is that the last scene is able to turn something gruesome into something hilarious. And so much of this movie plays up a strange perverse lightness in the face of truly dark and terrible scenes. It's a damn good movie.

See, I get where you're coming from. I will admit that The Shining is basically a collection of incidents that happen to the family and the story revolves around how they react to them, in similar fashion to how much of 2001: A Space Odyssey is just shots of spaceships showing mankind's technological progress. Fine.

It's probably the filmmaking that's a big part of why a lot of us like the film so much. The camera basically feels like it's its own character.

Dark and serious tends to be overly maudlin and hilariously bad when taken in conjunction with Hollywood's understanding of fairy tales. Just make Fables into a film series. It would work better. Fables tackles its source material with material, but also a light touch.

I think there's great cinematography and then there's experimental cinematography. The difference is that one works and the other doesn't, but we want to give it points for effort. The camera in The Shining slows the movie down to a screeching halt at times. My brain is moving on to other things in my head while the camera tries to catch up.

I think horror tends to bring out the worst in humanity and parade it around for our amusement. It hasn't always been that way, and I think the traditional Universal horror films are of a different breed and calibre than modern trash. Psychological horror, again, is a little different - but I don't give it much leeway; it often results in pointless murder and just trotted out as if it is "murder with meaning". Legion, I guess, would be an example of psychological horror working well. But overall, horror is something for which I have little respect.

I actually love World War II comics immensely. The same can't be said for WW2 films. I think the desire to turn them into gritty, brutal things takes some of the magic of film away from... well, film. Saving Private Ryan is great in isolation. But a great World War II film can steer your mind in the direction of carnage without having to depict it in excess.
