The "All Star" scene from Shrek

Rating: 30/100

Did you know that one of the least-inspired ways to open a movie is to show a character's daily routine? It doesn't create a bond between character and viewer. Everyone wakes up in the morning. Everyone showers, eats, etc. It's padding. When I started working on my TV show that I've been writing, I intentionally considered putting a "Wake Up In the Morning" opening into the first episode just because it's so trite and terrible. Ultimately, I decided against it.

I respect the puzzle of Saw, but it's gross, gratuitous and gory, and I don't condone murder or torture. The character of Zoom in Flash (the comic) is Jigsaw without the awfulness tacked on.

The character of Gandalf is iconic but not especially meaningful to me. The portrayal is utterly fantastic, and the script nails it perfectly. However, Gandalf himself never really providing any sort of penetrating insight into myself or invested itself emotionally in my heart. He's cool.

It's not about the gore itself but the constant proposition of gore and the expectation of it. Also 127 Hours only had one scene of gore but that was more than enough for me personally. It's all in the presentation.

It's bad. Also, it's not good. There really isn't any easy way to explain why, and that's due to the pervasive nature of consistent bad-ness.

The darker tone, somber subtext, and generally non-exploitative violence in comparison to later films allows it to stand on a separate tier. But ultimately, First Blood is just not that compelling for large swaths of the film.

Works when it's not said in that exact way. Return of the Jedi hints at this but doesn't lay it out in so many words, allowing the viewer to find their own subtext and interpretation to Force-related hooey. In virtually any other scenario, it's too simple to be believable.

Yeah, that. The person I saw it with, we both didn't like it, then we stepped out into the universe and it was like some weird Twilight Zone episode where everyone on earth liked the movie. Very strange. I'm always looking for people who don't like it-- having read your other responses in here you seemed more on the level with me on movie opinions than expected so I figured I'd give it a shot!

Now your natural instinct might be that I liked Captain America 1990. No I was just seeing how badly you'd rate it. Though 1990 Cap's gimmick of pretending to be sick to run away with cars is legendary.

Anyway for the next one let's go with...

If it makes you feel better I agree with you on that movie. It was "fine" but not anything I have any particular enthusiasm for. Solid 60/100 movie. In my case I attribute it to not having seen the movie when it was remotely current, as evidenced by having first seen it in 2007.

Inglorious Basterds

Rating: 97/100

Another movie where the details make the film great. Of course I could rave about how the methodical pace of Hans Landa's character makes him a delightful villain, or why the variations on how to motion the number three make this film so great, but I want to focus on something no one ever mentions: the comedic timing of B.J. Novak. The one Basterd to survive, Novak's character has like two lines in the whole movie, and yet Tarantino went out and co-opted a great dry comedian to nail those lines. And the result is that the last scene is able to turn something gruesome into something hilarious. And so much of this movie plays up a strange perverse lightness in the face of truly dark and terrible scenes. It's a damn good movie.
