Trump finally saying out loud the wannabe-fascist shit everyone always said he would.

Tl;dr Its a good thing President Xi will be President for life. Maybe we should try that one day.

Surprising comments by surprising people. Love you all despite your politics though.

'"He's now president for life. President for life. No, he's great," Trump said. "And look, he was able to do that. I think it's great. Maybe we'll have to give that a shot some day."
The remarks, delivered inside the ballroom at his Mar-a-Lago estate during a lunch and fundraiser, were upbeat, lengthy, and peppered with jokes and laughter.

Click bait. Take a joke out of context to headline with. Then even acknowledge it was a joke inside the article to cover bases while the ones who hate Trump irrationally will just run with it as "news".

Even as a joke though, there's a non-zero chance Donald's base will be more behind that idea now. I'll want to see polling on that.

I have eaten 2 warnings and 2 2 week bans at ResetERA if that is what you are referring to. I have never not come here. I just do not post here as much anymore. I post moreso on NeoGAF and ResetERA and other forums than Board 8 on GameFAQs.

Yeah, my bans and warning on ResetERA were garbage, but I mean, I kind of knew the moderating would probably be that way based on how the forum came to be. Is what it is.

Because the question is basically just saying if you want what Trump brings to the office. Though I think it'd be closer to low tens.

The question needs to say, would you support removing term limits and letting a President control the government for as long as he was continually voted in?

I mean, some might go for that actually when I write it. How many democrats would say yes with dreams of bringing back Obama for instance? Or whoever on the Republican side?

That is to point out that Xi or whatever's change still requires re-election to my knowledge. He can just be voted in repeatedly.

That said, Trump ran on instituting term limits for politicians. While he is never going to do anything in regards to that, this suggestion is completely at odds with his platform he ran on.

This is an example of what these type of headlines can do with people who do not care for anything but using them to further their own hate.

The fact this was clearly a joke poking fun at Xi and China for something that would never happen in America (now) doesn't matter to such an extreme echo chamber.

This is why I say that you guys are Far Left a lot. You are about 1 thousand left voices echoing the same comments from getting to what you see in that link.

It is poor taste if you wish to view it from that viewpoint sure. If you are viewing it from a standpoint of I think he is fascist or whatever, sure. If you are viewing it as a clean slate it is debatable. If viewing it as Trump is our president and would do what is best for us then it is purely tongue in cheek humor that is funny.

It depends where you are coming from.

If someone goes awol from work for 7 days and comes back with a slap on the wrist due to being buddies with the plant manager, and I say "Going awol for 7 days sure worked out for him. He got a nice vacation out of it. Maybe I should try that. Haha". It is humor that also criticizes.

You are coming in at it from an angle which makes it distasteful. He is speaking to a Republican fundraiser. And the joke was met with laughter because it hit the chord with the intended audience.

What exactly has Trump ever said that has caused you to give him the most intense benefit of the doubt?

It depends where you are coming from.

If someone goes awol from work for 7 days and comes back with a slap on the wrist due to being buddies with the plant manager, and I say "Going awol for 7 days sure worked out for him. He got a nice vacation out of it. Maybe I should try that. Haha". It is humor that also criticizes.

He says multiple times "I think it is great, I think President Xi is great" and this is bookended by his usual complaints and tangents--none of which are jokes--but yeah, this one thing he in the middle of his speech is 100% dry sarcasm.

In order for you to believe it's sarcasm, you also have to believe President Trump is talking shit about the President of China in front of a bunch of people like that.

Come on, Corrik.

lmao, it'd have literally started a new Civil War.

I'll concede it could have been a joke in exchange for the confirmation that Trump gives zero respect to the office of the Presidency, and doesn't take it seriously or care at all. Do we have a deal?

That's the kind of shit a sitting President just shouldn't say, ESPECIALLY a President who's divided the country so badly.

I am completely willing to believe that Trump trash-talked the President of China in front of a bunch of people. Trump is a loudmouthed buffoon, and despite being in charge of America's diplomats, it's clear that he has no concern whatsoever for America's diplomatic relations.

I do think that "president for life" is a joke, though. (For the record, I don't think that pledging to respect the outcome of the election only if he won was a joke, and I don't think either comment is at all becoming of a nominee, let alone elected official.)

Oh heh, people think the "president for life" thing was a joke?

Trump doesn't do the kind of humor that it would have to be to be the kind of joke people think it is; in other words, he doesn't do:

"It would be great for me to be president for life, right? Haha, I am just kidding, I wouldn't really want to do that but I am pointing out how ridiculous it is for Xi Jinping to do this and I understand that some people view me in a similar light."

That is WAY out of Trump's range. He doesn't do this kind of humor that relies on self-awareness, self-deprecation, and a general sense of irony. The kind of joke he is doing:

"It would be great for me to be president for life, right? Okay, I know you can't, but, right?"

In this case he's sort of joking but he's also 100% virtue signalling. We know from heaps of evidence that Trump looks up to authoritarian strongmen and models himself after them, and it's a pretty good bet that "president for life" sounds pretty nice in Trump's mind. It's something he would like and he is making that known. So yes, in a sense he is joking, but in a sense he is very much not.
