Have you not heard the horror stories of winners having people after their money? Maybe those are just sensationalized and don't happen to the majority of winners, but I don't know, sounds sucky even just to have to worry about it. It would be cool winning like a million since that's still a lot of money but you wouldn't have the spotlight of the jackpot winner

Same here. I would also set up a couple of scholarship funds. I've told my kids that if I won the lottery I will pay for all their schooling but they would still need to get a career and work for a living.

I'd pay loans, put some amount in a trust, buy a home, and then donate whatever's left. I've become less comfortable with the idea of having millions of dollars, which sounds ridiculous I admit, but it can be best used elsewhere.

Oh, and on the subject of tanking and draft lotteries, have you heard of the Gold Plan? Because it's perfect for anti-tanking. Simply, once a team is eliminated from the playoffs, a new set of standings is created for the teams eliminated. Teams are added only when they are out. Whoever is on top of these standings at the end of the season gets the first overall pick. It definitely doesn't work in the NFL (which is kind of immune to true tanking due to roster sizes), but I think the NHL and NBA should put it in place.

I'm not sure I follow. You're saying the team with the most wins after being eliminated gets a better pick? Then wouldn't they still just tank to get eliminated sooner and have a chance to get more wins? Or if you meant fewest wins, then it wouldn't really be different than it is now.

I don't really understand it either way since official elimination happens very late in the season, even if a team obviously has no chance otherwise. Why base something around a sample size of like an eighth of a season?

Just to make the math more concrete, imagine an NBA team having an 0-50 start. For them to be eliminated, you'd have to have eight other teams in their conference with a 33-17 record (0.660 winning percentage) or better. Both ends of those are very extreme and you're talking about 60% of the season already at that point.

Exactly this. And it's not like you can obviously tank, either. If you try to tank by coaching, wouldn't you just try to be a fringe playoff team if you have the talent to win after elimination*? If you drop all of your players, then you aren't gonna win after you get eliminated.

*I mean, yeah, being a fringe playoff team doesn't give you any advantages in the NBA.

I don't really understand it either way since official elimination happens very late in the season, even if a team obviously has no chance otherwise. Why base something around a sample size of like an eighth of a season?

Because it gives those who genuinely tried, but didn't have the talent a chance to guarantee themselves a high pick, rather than letting odds doing the work.

The perfect solution would be relegation, but nobody is gonna put that in place.

So if a team goes 1-10 after elimination they get a better pick than a team that was 0-2? Why do all this convoluted nonsense when, if you want to reward teams for trying, you can just make it like it is now but reverse the order?

I heard somewhere that the NBA was also looking at adding MLB style 1 game play-ins for a real playoff slot. I guess the idea behind is that the more teams that are potentially in contention the less tanking there will be. I don't love this idea but I like it better than the one slurpee brought up

I guess one good thing about that plan would be that it would eliminate the lottery (which nobody likes), but if has the potential to make really bad teams stay really bad, or if a team's star player gets hurt, can put them in a really bad spot

Because if you want to punish tanking without being extreme, you have to be convoluted.

The NBA needs less playoff teams, though.

That doesn't make sense to me either. They have a ton of playoff teams already, and any team that might potentially miss out on the playoffs because of a tiebreaker probably wasn't going to tank anyway.

Maybe they should just equally randomize the lottery, or put it into tiers or something. Obviously there's no way to satisfy everybody or they probably would have done it already

I have an idea I just made up. Is it crazy?

Worst 4 teams = tier 1, next-worst 5 = tier 2, next-worst 5 = tier 3

Every tier 1 team has 12.5% chance at the top pick
Tier 2 = 7%
Tier 3 = 3%

After the top three are set, go down in order of tier BUT within each tier draw proportional to record for the order. So like the 9-14 teams would still be 9-14, but it could be any order. Seems like it would add some variation but not move the teams around too much. I'm just spitballing though

No idea. I kinda thought they had tiers but I think they've always just drawn for the top 3 and not re-ordered anywhere else (obviously besides re-ordering from a lower team jumping up to top 3)

I was sold on it from the premise but looking it up now I see they got Chris Avellone to write it too which is awesome. Not all of his games have great writing but it shows they took the writing seriously while FTL was more player created storytelling which is also I'm sure in Into the Breach because no genre is better for that than turn based strategy

BotW, Odyssey and the SNES Classic were too much for me to pass up, but I don't know of anything like that this year (maybe the NES Classic). Now that I have those things though I feel like my urge to get new games is satiated for a while. So far I've only made one small gaming purchase in 2018 that I can remember.
