Im totally gonna get made fun of for this. Go ahead. Im a nerd.

So Im watching My Neighbor Totoro with my niece. Super influential movie and overall just one of the greats of Animation, if not all of cinema.

My sister walks in while its paused, sees that its animated, an immediately dismisses it as another shitty cartoon and that she shouldve known itd be bad, because I recommended it. But she doesnt get to say that, especially when she enjoys Keeping Up with the Kardashians and ESPECIALLY when we watch movies together every week, and whenever she picks one because the title card looks good, it always sucks (Our most recent watch was The Ritual... yeah...)

And I know its stupid that Im genuinely riled up about this, and it probably says more about me that Im still hung up on this 30 minutes later, but... what the fuck? Shes spitting on the face of one of the most iconic movies ever, and not even for a good reason. Just because its not live action.

Were literally in the middle of an animation revolution and she up and says that

*grumble grumble*

At least my niece really likes the movie. Her main take away is that she wants to sleep on her stomach on top of a pillow like Mei did with Totoro. And she also wanted cucumbers after seeing the characters eating them raw.

Tl;dr: Im a nerd and my sister said My Neighbor Totoro isnt a good movie, based only on a single frame.

Right?

And one of the things I eventually want to get on air is an animated show, so the fact that she writes something off because its a cartoon pisses me off, because a lot of people still have that mentality that things that arent acted by actual people in front of a camera suddenly arent valid.

This is the same woman who genuinely enjoyed Avatar TLA back when she was 16, but now sees it just another cartoon that isnt any good.

Well still raw but in salads and stuff. Maybe he just meant plain?

Anyway!

I like some anime because you can do things thst special effects just cant pull off. Or at least, not realistically anyway so itll look just as fake, and cost a lot more money.

But like. Dragon ball is stupid but fun.
Idk all the anime Ive seen anymore its more than I thought.

One punch man is hilarious and wouldnt work acted out. So its not like anime is just childish or something. Its very different is all.

She usually eats her cucumbers with balsamic vinegrette. This time, she wanted to eat them plain.

Makes sense I guess.

I was wondering whether it was common to perhaps cook, bake or wok cucumbers and how that would taste.

I think Im just gonna go to bed now. I was about to watch Spirited Away but now I cant even do that because Im still pissed off.

This is the same woman who could see the entirety of Seven Samurai, and her only takeaway would be I dont like movies in black and white. Seven, goddamn, Samurai.

I want to watch Spirited Away with my niece next, but Im afraid shes get scared by the scene with the ghost in the bath house. And I dont have enough knowledge of other Miyazaki movies to confidently choose one thatll be appropriate for a 4 year old.

Maybe Kikis Delivery Service?

I genuinely think that theres nothing wrong with watching the Kardashians, but at least have the sense to think well I really like a show a ton of people hate. Maybe I should give this new thing I havent heard of before a shot. Even if the medium isnt something Im used to. My brother, and a ton of other people, think its good, maybe I should listen and go into it with an open mind.

Even when I know a movie my sister picks is bad, I still watch it. Because I genuinely get something out of everything I watch, and I never, ever, judge a book by its cover. I even watched The Last Airbender (the shitty live action one) after everyone told me it was bad, but I still went into it thinking Id enjoy it (I ultimately didnt)

Kinda, yes. Just checked the DVD and the rating here is "all ages". Which is lower than our "MG6" which basically recommends adult supervision for kids under the age of 6. Should be fine as long as she watches it with say you.

Edit: I also see import DVDs with an "U" rating, which Google clarifies as: "U Universal Suitable for all. A U film should be suitable for audiences aged four years and over, although it is impossible to predict what might upset any particular child."

I try not to be negative in front of kids

But I did go off on one of my cousins because he literally slapped my butt every single time I saw him in person (which is only a couple times a year) even though hes a bit younger than me. Im 21, hes like 12 now. It was going on since I was 16. And people were thinking everything its tunny because he was a kid and whatever but it bugged me and eventually I screamed at him in Vietnamese, which isnt even my primary language so its not very good at this point and family got mad at me.

My niece didnt get scared at the parts of Spirited Away I thought she would!

The only part that freaked her out was the part where Chihiro gives Haku the medicine, and he momentarily freaks out. My niece was even okay with the chase scene when No Face was trying to eat Chihiro. She just kept saying that No Face was a very bad boy right now
