I am curious about thoughts here. I saw a post on Twitter of someone claiming that Fascists would demand to get rid of free speech and then countered it with antifa claiming that they would destroy free speech first.

That had me thinking. If you refuse to allow these people to talk, no matter how much we hate them, we are taking away their first amendment right. Free speech is the foundation of our nation, so my question is this.

CE, do you believe that these hate groups should be able to speak publicly?

Free speech doesn't excuse people from being a dick.

My fiance was a refugee of war and a Muslim, and when we did a group tour these old white Americans from Michigan were telling the group how they keep guns to kill the Muslims before the Muslims kill them and how they hate refugees, etc. This is when they know my fiance is part of the groups they are attacking.

When I asked them to stop because it was upsetting her, they said "we're allowed our opinion and right to free speech".

Unbelievable. Some people are just dicks.

It's a pretty clear cut case. Their opinions are absolutely horrendous and any intelligent adult who buys into it is willingly buying into something that has been proven wrong for 80+ years. That doesn't mean they should be censored, however, as their arguments are laughably bad and easily disproven and they are their own worst enemies.

However, there is a certain contingent of people, both here and in other places, who seem to believe that GameFAQs/Twitter/Facebook are public services and that legally these sites cannot censor them because of 'freedom of speech'. This is ridiculous as freedom of speech only stops the government from censoring your opinion, not private corporations, and more importantly, no one is legally forced to publish your opinions. When you post something on the internet, you are in fact publishing it, and the sites that host your content are, in fact, publishing you and therefore have the right to not publish your opinions if they don't want to.

Just because you hit 'post' and the oversite process is done after the message is posted does not change the fact that it is being 'published' and the exact same rules apply.

Okay censor them if they're too nasty, but disputes will give you opportunity and practice in countering their claims. If they're silenced then how will anyone know how to react to their arguments?

Freedom of speech only means they can't be arrested by the government. People are free to not listen or give groups a platform to speak.

So don't think punching Nazis or drowning out their voices is justified when they are simply voicing their opinions. You are using violence and aggression against non-violent people, just like the Nazis did in WW2.

Even if we bought into your false premise that people here are advocating aggression against the Nazis, your simplistic rendering of the issues is ridiculously off base. The Nazis advocated stripping people of their rights and freedoms based on their race, sexuality, etc. This (mostly imaginary) group that is advocating a harsh touch with Nazis are literally calling for that behavior based on the fact that Nazis advocate violent, fascist, inhumane, immoral behavior, i.e. their choices.

No, they are a political group that is interested in seizing political power to violently push their agenda.
