They're holding the real estate market hostage by refusing to allow more construction to happen.

That has absolutely nothing to do with liberals dude.

It's most notably the leftists in the state who are enforcing regulations that are stifling construction. It's government involvement in areas where it shouldn't be.

California has an insolvent public pension system. Those liabilities will detonate when the current bull market in stocks ends. You can bet that the CA leftists will try to loot as much as they can from tax payers to keep those bloated government pensions afloat.

Lmao that's bullshit. Most of my family, even the ones in California, is in the construction industry. I keep my eyeballs on the industry in California and Illinois.

There are a lot of regulations that make it expensive to build new homes, often times not even worth it. And there's also regulations on how many homes can be built in various areas. Guess which party is most likely to enforce those regulations? The leftists in California don't give a damn about construction unless it's project complexes for Section 8.

In fact, the more left-leaning a city, the more expensive the cost of living. San Francisco is one of the most leftist places in the world. If they wanted to build more housing, they could do it.

lmao proud sometimes you get so caught up in your fake online personas you actually start to believe you're an expert. Hoth tier stuff honestly.

Every fucking patch of grass in urban CA gets built upon, regulations aren't stopping anything. If you were actually from CA you'd see how much places like DTLA or Koreatown have changed in the last decade because of all the construction.

The problem is that LA grew by sprawl and all those homeowners have enormous political power to oppose more construction in their areas.

There's a ton wrong with California but the most common thing I hear is "everyone's liberal and for government regulation and wants you to be allowed to spread AIDs without punishment".

Which is just laughably wrong but it still happens in almost every topic. Aside from fender and @voldothegr8 saying stupid shit though this topics been pretty reasonable and on topic so far.

compared to the tech folk that are leaving, do you have numbers to show the ones entering? people leaving, even within a specific sector/workforce doesn't mean a lot if larger numbers are arriving, right? do you have numbers or figures for the overall population of the tech workforce?

Correct. Having some satellite offices in Denver and Austin is not the same as moving HQs. Housing prices is a major concern though.

I hope they start taxing foreign people who buy homes outside the state at a higher rate for property taxes and try to eliminate the loopholes that surround that.

if those homes are instead purchased by people who actually live in them instead of investors who leave them vacant, it would at least remain constant, if not grow, right? property taxes are paid regardless of whether someone lives there and if someone is living there, they'll spend money on local goods and services which should generate more tax revenue, etc.

This is a non-econ major speaking so I'm probably ignorant, but my hunch is if we start actually taxing and preventing foreign buyers from buying up California properties it would lower home prices, this would hurt actual Californians who bought their homes as investment properties and they would get mad...so we're stuck

Either housing prices come down and people lose their investment.....or we deal with having extremely high home prices.

*JUST BUILD MORE*

I agree we need to continue building, but there is no way you can build enough to have a bunch of new ones enter the market and not affect the prices of people's initial investment.

Basically NIMBYs don't want their home prices to go down because it's their investment and it sucks hard. I'm not smart enough to solve that one

But you have to think about the effects on the net investment into Californian property. If a lot of the current purchases are made by people abroad who are intending to hold and resell, then that move could end up stunting tax revenue.

This is a big part of the problem, for sure. It seems that no matter where a project is proposed-- from high-density apartments around Los Angeles mass transit corridors, to tract-housing in Conservative-friendly suburbs-- nobody wants new development in their backyard. Housing is approved (or not) at a very local level, by citizen-lead planning commissions and city councils. The blame can't be placed on any one political party.

At the same time though, the NIMBYs aren't totally wrong. There are areas of the state that are permanently gridlocked, where the freeways haven't been properly funded for decades, where you would need to build in excess of 22 lanes today just to beat the induced demand (see the 91 freeway). As high as construction costs (and corresponding new home prices) are, they still don't come close to pricing in all the externalities absorbed by older communities.

The demand to live here is just too high and for every person who decides to leave there are two more willing to make difficult sacrifices to come here.

It's time to tell them to fuck off. If the only reason your asset is valuable is because you have a monopoly over it, your wealth is an illusion and you deserve to get it slapped out of your hands so that others can have a chance too.

If more construction was allowed in California's most densely packed cities, I'd quit my job and move there immediately to partake in what would be one of the most lucrative construction booms we've ever seen.

That's certainly what I'm saying, even though Californians are assholes. At the same time, there are many towns out in the midwest with unemployment so low they keep raising their workers' wages to keep them from quitting because there literally aren't enough people to fill all of the open positions. That's great for workers until the companies can no longer afford to stagnate and may pack up and move somewhere more populated. This can EASILY solve two problems at once.
