The Good:
This Christian Folk music the cult has is really good. Seriously.

I'm most of the way through Gears of War 2. I wanted to finish that over the weekend, but a 4 day weekend with kids kinda limits opportunities. Again, this game is fine. I'm a little taken aback at how timid the single player campaign is. I was expecting some spectacle in these games but they're more meat and potato shooters with brief flashes of something grand. The mechanics are solid and like the first game it does a good job of mixing up objectives or chapter themes so it's not just one continuous fire fight. I was also expecting more of a leap in complexity, sort of like how the first fight in Arkham City has more enemies attacking you at once than at any point in Arkham Asylum, but this is a sideways progression. Also, man, the characters! The way people talked about Cole builds up certain expectations, but I think he has like 7 lines across two games so far!

I remember enjoying Gears of War 1 a lot for the 1P, and each game afterwards I got more underwhelmed. I think the main thing that made it better was playing with neon and other B8ers.

Multiplayer is always great though!

Got through the first of 3 areas for Far Cry 5. Man, the gameplay and mission design are sooo good. I'm super into it!

Also, quick sidebar, I love what they are doing with the DLC. I hate story DLC in video games. After I beat a game, I don't want to go back and try and readjust to that world 3-4 months later and continue the story. I like that the plan is to do goofy stuff with it, with the core gameplay (kind of like they did with blood dragon back in the day). This might be the first game in a long time where I buy single player DLC.

I didnt find Infamous too enjoyable in any real way. Im not sure what the answer to that would be. When it comes to open world games, I dont think they focus too much on the act of traversing their big worlds as much as making them big. Spider-Man looks like the perfect way of getting rid of the need for fast travel. Who needs that when you can swing through a city as Spider-Man? I want this game, haha.

Firewatch is coming to Switch! I havent played this yet, but I have been wanting to for a while. Didnt think it would make the jump after hearing about how it ran on the PS4, but seemingly, theyve spent a lot of time optimizing it for Switch, and will roll those optimizations out to other platforms later on.

I believe there have been significant performance improvements with Unity since Firewatch launched, so hopefully they're able to see those benefits on whatever version Firewatch uses. It's a very cool game to go into with zero expectations.

Firewatch was pretty cool. I'd definitely say pick it up.

Also, I bought ARMS yesterday, wanted to make sure to take advantage of the sale. Won't be playing it tons until I leave for my work trip, but I played some Grand Prix yesterday and felt myself getting more accustomed to the controls. Pretty cool game, and it works well on the switch's online platform as a mostly pure 1 v 1 game where you don't have to worry about communication.

Mostly still playing Far Cry 5 and Ni No Kuni 2. I just got to the point in Ni No Kuni 2 where a craptop of side quests get unlocked all at once. It's a bit overwhelming, I liked when they gave you 4-5 at a time. I wish the side quests were more engaging, they are all super standard for the most part. The thrill of seeing your city improve, and the benefits to your gear/army are noticeable, so that is keeping me going, but I am finding myself more disappointed with the game as I go. The 7.8/10 from IGN is starting to feel about right.

Gah, I got this as a gift on Switch and haven't touched it yet. Still glad to see it come over, though!

Is it really the ideal Disgaea? I liked 4 quite a bit mechanically but as a full package I still feel like 1 has yet to be topped. (Of course gameplay is the most important thing here so I'm still way more likely to play 4 than 1.)

The campaign isn't as good as the first two Disgaea games, but the post-game is the most expansive and easy to grasp yet. It's Disgaea on steroids.

I think those multiplayer changes remain the coolest thing about the new version of Dark Souls, but I'm still on the fence about whether that's enough to pull me in.

So I got deep into AC: Origins over the last couple days. Thanks to that Razer Games coupon mix-up, I grabbed it and Vermintide 2 for $30 total. I'm liking it. I'm not sure if I buy into the idea that it's the refresh this series needed, but Origins is grounded in its setting in ways the AC games of the past were not. There's a deeper connection in Origins between you as the protagonist and the people your character represents, thanks to the two dozen plus regions in Origins each having their own series of sidequests pertaining to the people who inhabit it. They also do a better job of fleshing out Bayek's character than the main story, which is just a typical multi-tiered revenge plot that obscures its scope.

The most compelling part of the Xbox One might just be its backward compatibility support. There are games I thought would be lost to time that keep popping up every so often and surprising me. Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Panzer freakin Dragoon Orta!

real pretty game that never really has any highs and doesn't land any of its emotional punches because i barely knew any of the characters.

a good deal of the puzzles also felt rote. like if you've played a bunch of puzzle games before, you know exactly what to do.

started invisible inc. digging it! security level increasing every turn is a brilliant design choice that i can only assume will make for super intense missions later on.

it's a strategy game originally made for pc so obviously the ui can be a bit hard to parse, but it's manageable with a controller so far.

yeah, this was my take as well. it's a nice enough game, and I do recommend it to anyone who enjoys games of that ilk because there are so few, but it's not ambitious enough to leave a mark.
