Most of the south has left is behind, which I know isn't saying much, but makes Mississippi look even worse.

They do have advanced curriculum (I used to be in it.) But yeah, they are actually cutting parts of it out and reducing funding for education. Also, there is an attitude that education is bad and direct job training (like go to a company and learn a job) is better than being cultured or educated.

Why so much educational cutting in Mississippi instead of the rest of South (which also is bad.)

by advanced i mean modern.

they still teach abstinence only bullshit and i'm sure there are parts where they teach creationism in school. that shit always happens in the southeast.

idk why the south in general sucks with education. it's like that in parts of the southwest too. just with shitting education funding and testing.

Meh, I 'm reading about that from Post-Enlightenment Modernist German/Austrian thinkers. I don't think that is only a Mississippi notion or relegated to stereotypical Protestant Evangelicals.

Actually, Mississippi's public schools are very government orientated with most of the state needing the government. I just don't know why more so than say...even, Alabama or South Carolina.

I did all of my schooling and college in the south, not once was creationism taught since it's kinda illegal.

I wasn't raised here but I Iive in Mississippi now and I'd rather live here in Mississippi than most anywhere else. People who criticize Mississippi mostly don't live here and just go off stereotypes. I've lived just about everywhere from Arizona to North Carolina, from Alaska to Great Britain and with only a few criticisms I have chosen to live here.

Yeah, there have been some high profile instances of racism involving some fans of Boston-area sports teams, and ESPN runs with it like "Is Boston a racist town?" etc etc.

Of course there are racists everywhere and Boston is no exception, but overall this place is like any other.

I lived there, taught there, worked there, was partially educated there, and one of my mentors is the state rep of education of MS. I am very familiar with MS.

I am by no means anti-Southern, but I never understood why MS lags behind, even, the rest of the South. The coast should bring in revenue from drilling, casinos, tourism, (like In LA, AL, FL) but it doesn't to nearly the same capacity. The Delta has remained neglected. Northwest MS has become a haven for racists. There isn't nearly as much influx of talent or industry as neighboring TN or AL.

@Person106 I would say some of the best things are that the people here in Mississippi for the most part are just friendly and caring towards one another. "Southern Hospitality" is a real thing and it is alive and well in Mississippi. The cost of living is also very reasonable compared to just about everywhere else. While some things like concerts and shows don't always come to Mississippi you are only a short drive to ATL, New Orleans, or Nashville depending on what part of the state you live in. If you like the beach and seafood you have Gulfport/Biloxi and its casinos.

TBH one of the things I miss the most since moving here a little over 16 years ago is I cant get Chinese food delivered around here, but I live in a very nice town where the people at the Chinese food restaurant already know your name and usual order when you call them, just like they do at my dry cleaners, and my dog groomers, and just about everywhere else.

On a side note @BigOlePappy I live in Northwest Mississippi and I'm not sure by what you mean by our area becoming a "haven" for racists.

White flight from Memphis and, ironically despite it being middle class, low education. Northwest MS is a unique position of awful education, but a nepotism keeping uncultured, uneducated people in power. My ex got her PhD in Memphis and she even noted....the vibe is very different... in DeSoto county, which was her nice way of saying it was a little racist/uneducated.

Two separate questions, both of which are based on ignorant stereotypes. For education, while it's ranked low, it's by no means the lowest in *any* chart (which depend on data sources and criteria; for instance, the US census (which Wikipedia uses) lists *California* as having a worse high school graduation rate and, more importantly, a lot of the rankings are skewed by continued education statistics -- which is important because people with higher degrees will move somewhere else for a better job and show up in that state's survey). As for why it's consistently ranked low, are you seriously asking why one of the country's poorest states would lag behind in education? If so, I'd have to question the quality of your state's schools =p

As for allegations of racism, that's difficult to substantiate and every state, country, etc, seems to have some amount of racism. However, if I was ranking the states with the poorest race relations, I'm not sure Mississippi would be that quick to jump to mind considering all of the other states which have made bigger headlines for race riots like Missouri, Massachusetts, California, New York, etc. As such, Mississippi is likely unremarkable in that regard. Allegations of racism seem to be based more on stereotypes than anything, which again likely hate on the state because it's not just poor but has consistently been the poorest state for ages.

I'm not trying to start an argument with you @BigOlePappy but;

One of my sisters is a teacher here and both my sisters have kids in school here and I can say from experience that the DeSoto County Schools have greatly improved. I think the misconception that the area is low educated comes from the belief that DeSoto County was where people came when they couldn't afford to go to Collierville or Germantown. We are the only School District in the Region where every High School has a fully funded arts education program, meaning art, drama, and music. Also every one of our public High Schools has their own Theatre for Performing Arts. You cant say that for too many school districts anymore. As far as the conception of "White Flight", everyone Black, White, Hispanic, or anything else is abandoning Memphis because the crime rate in Memphis has gotten out of control. Year after year the crime rate rises, heck even the police are fleeing, every year more and more police are leaving the MPD to go to different police departments. Last year Memphis was rated the fourth most dangerous city in America by Forbes. The thing keeping Memphis afloat is their Industry. Luckily unlike cities like Detroit, Memphis hasn't had a collapse in its job market.
