Dunno. Characters, story, more Final Fantasy, in general. I want to start with the more modern ones and possibly work my way backwards. I was never really a fan as a kid.

It also comes down to party NPCs. How my playables look is also a pretty big determining factor for me. It might be shallow, but eh.

In all seriousness, though, the two games handle differently enough (action-RPG versus limited turn-based RPG) that FFXIII will be a different experience for you despite similar character design, similar lack of coherence, etc.

Haven't played XV but XIII was disappointing and XIII-2 was a heap of garbage that spits on the Final Fantasy name.

XV is better than XIII for me but they are completely different games in how they play. If you like turned based combat that I suppose XIII might be worth a shot but it's really not that great. Mind you neither was XV.

XIII is underrated, IMO. The battle system is actually pretty great once it opens up (though you have to play a LONG time to get to that point), and the story isn't great but it isn't the worst in the series.

XIII is pretty good, XII-2 sucks, don't touch it. Lightning Returns has a really fun battle system, but crap everything else.

I preferred XIII's turn based combat to most of the series' turn based combat. People talk about just pressing one button the whole game. Except that if you did that you'd probably get rolled. The fact is that most people who actually got through the whole game complained that it was too fast (too hard). Which is why XIII-2 was slower than its predecessor. I like that XIII is decently tough for a final fantasy.

This is how I feel as well. If you like FFX, you'll probably enjoy XIII. If you like the first Ni no Kuni, you'll probably like XIII-2 (it's not as good, but the combat and more emotional story are similar enough to make this comparison fair). Lightning Returns was not enjoyable...
