I enjoyed it great amounts. I dont think itll be as good outside of theatres so I would suggest seeing it in theaters if you are interested in it.

The book was also fun, but not worth a second read. Not good, just fun. The book mentioned Spielberg a lot

I don't plan to watch it but Ready Player One sounds a lot like Sword Art Online except there are a lot less stakes since people aren't trapped in the virtual world and don't die in real life if they die in the game.

With a heavy dose of nostalgia baiting.

Really, VR Chat is a more realistic (and comical) representation of what people do if you let them do whatever in an anonymous environment, as in, be stupid because there are no repercussions.

I'm not saying SAO was good, but the stakes are real, there is no real penalty for losing in Ready Player One.

Is there even a penalty for getting killed in game in Ready Player One? If not, why do the battles even matter?

You lose everything you have in the game if you die. All your money and loot, and since the game is so huge that has big implications in the real world. It shows a guy trying to kill himself after dying in the game. Not sure how it is in book.

How does a person's in game inventory have real world implications? Can in game money be spent in the real world?

In the Ready Player One commercial, it says people use the VR World as an escape, and I'm sure tons of people die every single day in the game as in any game where you're allowed to kill anybody and everybody, because there will always, always be people who think that's funny, if everybody killed themselves every time that happened the suicide rate in the Ready Player One world must be sky high.

You can use the game money to buy things in real life, and this is in a semi apocalyptic future where most of the world is slums and EVERYBODY plays this game, especially those that live in the slums. So the fake money is all they have. The game basically runs everything irl, so losing all your shit affects some people quite a bit. The main bad guys use the game to make most of their money IRL. The guy who tried to kill himself was an Asian businessman.

When you die in game do your possessions vanish or can they be looted?

If in game money is the same as real money, why not spend all your money on real life possessions as soon as possible to prevent losing it in game? it would seem like the logical thing to do if you could lose everything at any time if you die in game. This would especially be the case if you can loot people you killed, if you can killing and theft should be rampant and people would form gangs for this purpose alone.

Not related to the original question but how did the villains of the movie become real world rich off of the game, have money they can't lose in the game, and prevent their employees from keeping the keys that let you control the game instead of handing them over?

When you die in the movie you are explored into coins, so you can be looted in a sense, but it didnt seem as if everything you owned could be stolen, just whatever coins you exploded into, didnt seem like your items were taken, you just lost them.

The only time money is spent in real life in the movie is when the main character buys a special suit to play the game in where he can feel whats happening to him. Its like if you get punched you can feel it, if youre fucking somebody you can feel it. Its the only time this is done in the movie, so Im not sure if game money can only be spent on game things or not, but the way the currency works Im sure you could buy whatever you wanted irl if you had enough money. Basically what people do on mmos these days but with a global scale. Why would you not spend all your money on irl stuff? Because the game is just as important as irl stuff. Why live in your real shit life when you can live in your fake amazing life?

Its clear there are clans. Basically gangs, but not bad.

The Villians in the movie are a mega corporation who do everything through the game. They offer people real and fake money. They lend people money irl who are desperate and then make them pay it off in prisons disguised as helping centers where they are forced to play the game and do things in the game that earn the company money in real life.

I actually wondered what prevented a company member from keeping a key if they got one for the company, but I would assume its a contract they signed or simply expecting that person to be too desperate to not hand it over for some real cash. Its esentially glossed over, but it could have easily been explained in a line of dialogue if they had needed to.

Its made clear you can do just about anything in the game, from dancing to watching movies to death matches. Most ordinary things seem to be free. Its kinda the point the creator wanted, was to make a game where you can do whatever you want in real life, but there are special items that either cost money or you have to win in death matches or races or something dangerous where you could possibly die and lose everything. The more dangerous, the higher the payout.

Youre making me want to watch the movie again!

I just got back from watching it and loved it. I thought it was a pop culture reference overload that surprisingly didn't seem to distract you from the "meat" of the movie. I could't stop laughing at The Shining reference and was already laughing the moment I saw the bouncing ball after Aech mentioned he/she never seen it and asked if it's scary.

I actually liked how the movie lightly touched on gaming addiction and how some people have killed themselves over games and/or neglected their family due to a game. I don't think the movie was trying to send a message with those few seconds of reference but I thought simply including it got some point across.
