Isn't Star Wars a Space opera though? I've heard the same. Despite the sci-fi elements, the story itself can be done in different settings and it'll still be the "same" story so to speak. Urban fantasy is a well known (and my current favorite) genre at this point.
Star wars is a scientifically advanced fantasy series, also known as Science Fantasy. There are many other books in that genre, but it is not as well known. The Shadowrun books for instance are all science fantasy. Any book that has magical elements (the force counts) in a scientifically advanced setting (robots/space ships/light sabers/shields etc), is science fantasy. Which is also one of my favorite genres even though it is far more rare. I don't know why that is, as they usually rock. --- "did you steal my f***in signature" Helly ... Copied to Clipboard!
