Chelsea Russell, 19, from Liverpool posted the lyric from Snap Dogg's I'm Trippin' to pay tribute to a boy who died in a road crash, a court heard.
Russell argued it was not offensive, but was handed a community order.
Prosecutors said her sentence was increased from a fine to a community order "as it was a hate crime".

Liverpool Justice Centre, sitting at Sefton Magistrates' Court, heard Russell posted the lyrics to her account after the death of a 13-year-old in a road accident in 2017, the Crown Prosecution Service said.
The words Russell used on her account contained a racial label which some people find extremely offensive.
The screenshot was passed to hate crime unit PC Dominique Walker, who told the court the term was "grossly offensive" to her as a black woman and to the general community.

Russell was found guilty of sending a grossly offensive message by a public communication.
She was given an eight-week community order, placed on an eight-week curfew and told to pay costs of 500 and an 85 victim surcharge.

So, I guess it's not just Count Dankula getting convicted of hate crimes for posting innocuous stuff online. What's wrong with Britain these days?

She probably just copy and pasted the lyrics.

Apparently that's enough to commit a hate crime now. Copy and pasting a rapper's lyrics.

This makes no sense. We're they friends? Did they bond over this song or even just like it? Is playing this music with a black person in your home or within ear distance a hate crime too?

What about concerts and album sales?do you have to sign an I will not be offended sheet before attending or buying? I'd consider myself a liberal and I'm confused as fuck about this nonsense

You think they would be accused of a hate crime if they had? It did seem weird that they didn't say what the offending word was.

No idea if they would have been or not but I 100% believe it's the reason they didn't at least post a censored version of the lyrics -- they didn't wanna risk opening themselves up to it.

Intent doesn't matter. Context doesn't matter.

At my job if I say something seemingly innocuous to someone and someone else around the corner catches it out of context, I can get in serious trouble because feelings.

There was a girl on Big Brother in the UK who said the n word and got kicked off the show, even though it was the slang version. There was also a black American rapper on the celebrity version of show who spoke about the differences between the slang version and the slur version while talking about rap, and he was warned that he should be careful about talking about such subjects (though he wasn't given a "formal warning." Also rules in the celebrity version are more lenient although they have kicked celebrities out).

In one season of Big Brother in the US, numerous contestants made racist, homophobic, anti-Semitic and sexist comments, including the slur n word, the most common homophobic slur, and racially charged references to an Asian contestant. No one was kicked out... but at least 3 of the people who did this lost their jobs during the airing of the season. One contestant, while mockingly impersonating another contestant, jokingly said something like "I'm <other contestant's name> and I'm a pedophile and there are kids locked in my basement." Cops got a warrant and searched his house after this aired (the guy who said it, not the guy he was impersonating) but found nothing.
