Working the front desk at a hotel. Actually 2 hotels, but they're side by side and apparently run by the same company. I start tomorrow night, and will be working 2 nights one, 2 nights at the other, with another shift tossed in somewhere too.
I'm so nervous, and dreading being trained. I don't know if I'll be able to stand 8 hours stuck with some guy I don't know. D:

A quick handy right at the start is a great way to cut the tension and it can act as a bonding experience. You could make a friend for life.

I guess I am. I've been looking since November, had a few times I thought I had found one, but they all fell through. My dad's ex sister-in-law works there and got me the job, so I suppose I did luck into it.

Nerves kept me awake half the night, and I'm feeling sick because of it already. God, I hate being like this.

Not really an issue of luck =p Luck would be if found a lost dog and, when you returned it, the owner turned out to own a fancy hotel and asked you to become manager. Then, while working, you discovered the legend of an old mobster who supposedly hid millions of dollars on the premises and and, while cleaning up one day, accidentally break a vase that contains a map to the treasure which you then use to buy the hotel.

I hope you enjoy the hospitality industry. You can meet some really interesting people and make decent $$$ when you move up to supervisor and manager

You can learn a lot. Even if you dread it there are always positions for front desk personnel from mom and dad hotels to some super high scale ones

I wouldn't have expected that, it seems like it'd be a basic dead end type job. I was told they'd do good and hand out promotions pretty good, idk. I don't think I'll blow it or anything, I just have trouble dealing with people for long periods, like the guy training me tonight. >_<

Turns out that I had it backwards. The guy training me ended up being one of my brother's old friends. He recognized me and was super friendly, like we've known each other forever. He talked all night long, which I was ok with because I didn't have to say anything.

However, it seems I was mislead about the nature of the job. It's true I was running the front desk, and checking people into/out of their rooms, but I also have to audit their finances every night. It's seriously like 300 pages of paperwork that I have no idea how to do. The guy ran through the entire process super fast and it still took over 2 hours, and he expects that I remember everything he told me.

Also, I'm not scheduled to go in again until Saturday, but he requested that I come in tonight too. Also, he wants me to pull a double on Saturday already. >_>
Ugh... I'm not sure I'm cut out for this one.

Give it some time. I has too felt overwhelmed by a new job. It might be frightening at first but as soon you get into it will eventually feel like second nature.
You'd be surprised how fast people can adapt at new jobs if they just show some effort.
I'm not good at giving advice but I hope I did something at least.

Pulling doubles already? Sounds like you'll be raking in the dough! Also the workload might seem daunting at first but I'm sure you'll get accustomed to it pretty quickly.

Yea sounds like you are more Front Desk Agent/Night Auditor

Dude, this isn't supposed to be easy. You should really focus on trying to learn as much as possible, as I said you will learn things that can only make you look better/more attractive for better jobs. Think of it as a learning experience and there is no good/bad. You just learn what you want to do and don't want to do in the near future

Obviously you got the job for a reason. Don't take the opportunity for granted and definitely do not think negatively about the job as you just started it. All jobs seem intimidating on the first day. It may seem like you have no idea how to do anything but as time passes things will just click

If you don't understand ask the trainer to slow down and show you what you need to do again.
You'll rock at this job once you understand what you need to do.

Doesn't sound like they're lying. Some jobs have stuff that's only attached to one shift. So, that's mostly it.

I agree with this. It's ok to ask questions. And for most things, you can usually take notes. I don't think he really expects you to understand all of it after only one night. Especially since it seemed like a lot. Try to understand as much as you can. But ask questions if you don't. That way, you won't mess up. And try to do it yourself while
He walks you through it. Sometimes, it's easier to learn things if you do it yourself. Good Luck!

Front Desk Agents usually do Night Audits as well so they weren't lying

It isn't difficult but within the industry it's expected that if you do one you do the other

Ok, I was freaking out over this. Literally making myself so sick that I was close to vomiting from the stress of whether or not I had to do these extra shifts. I called the boss to talk to him about it(I needed his permission for the extra shifts) and was going to work them if he wanted me too. Turns out the number I was given has been disconnected... >_>

Would it be wrong if I only worked my scheduled shifts this week? I was already told that I didn't have to if I couldn't, but he was pretty strongly pressuring me too. God, I hate being so weak willed and worrisome.

So, if they said you don't have to, then you don't have to. If you want the extra money, then I would do it. But you also need to make sure you don't overdue it. Only do it if you think you can handle it. It would be good because you can get a little more training on it. But it's up to you, buddy.

How can they possibly have enough financial activity to justify that much work on a nightly basis? Oo Is this a really big hotel?

Well, I'd get paid for working the shift. So only extra money as far as I'd get a day of work in. Which is why I needed to ask permission first, I'm not sure they want to pay extra for two more shifts.

It's actually two hotels, one is very large, the other is small. I'm currently working at the small one. It's the same company though, somehow, so if the big one is too expensive or something, people just come over to the smaller cheaper one next door.
I only got to handle part of the financial papers, so I'm not sure how much they bring in.
