Psycho Mantis Boss Fight

This is the point for me when MGS went from "pretty good" to "holy crap this is incredible." There's still nothing quite like switching controller ports or having Mantis read your memory card or move your controller with vibration. The magic is still intact every time I play through it. Even the little "Hideo" screen fake-out is fantastic. Easily solidified MGS as one of the all-time great series.

Lil' Slugger, or rather, the belief in Lil' Slugger

It's horrifying to see the effects of shared hysteria in action. It matters little if Lil' Slugger is real or not. The real heart of Paranoia Agent is the desire to believe it's real and what that means for our collective sanity.

Battle of Hoth

Still the most memorable battle of the entire Star Wars franchise for me. The way the AT-ATs are brought down, Vader force choking through a monitor, multiple viewpoints of the action, it's a brilliantly chore graphed action masterpiece.

The initial bird attack

Despite Birdemic being hailed as one of the greatest bad movies of all time, I find the whole ordeal quite the chore to get through. The first half is an absolutely romantic-cliche slog and the second half is a preachy continuity nightmare. But for one brief moment, before the recycled birds get repetitive and unfunny, we have the initial bird attack at the hotel, a sequence of comedic gold as our protagonists swat at nothing in particular with coat hangers. This scene IS Birdemic as far as I'm concerned.

The relationship between Hannibal and Will

One of the most complicated relationships on television. A mutual seductive attraction, a psychological battle of wits, the feeling of freedom Will feels when with Hannibal. It's so much more than a good & evil opposites attract sort of deal. It's a scary grey area, as the struggle to become superior and in control takes over the two men. Of course, if it wasn't for the terrific acting, it wouldn't be half as good as it is.

The Battles/Pokemon Showdown

Though I liked Pokemon a lot when I was in the 10-13 age range, I lost most of my interest in the series for a long time after that. However, recently, after getting into Pokemon Showdown pretty heavily, I realized what I think I always knew: the battles are the best part. Pokemon Showdown is the pure distillation of what this franchise is to me. A surprisingly deep system that tests wits, strategy, and knowledge of all the ins-and-outs of the game. Random battle takes it that extra step further; learning to handle the cards you're dealt with whether excellent or crap is a fun way to challenge yourself.

A Case of Mistaken Identity

There's plenty to love about Hitchcock's landmark spy thriller, but most of all, I love the simple fact that Roger Thornhill never wanted any of what happens in the film. It's a piece of serendipity that turns Cary Grant's simple ad-exec into James Bond, despite plenty of bumbling and lucky incidents along the way.

The beginning

I Know What You Did Last Summer is largely a straight-forward average slasher, but the beginning sequence is a classic tragedy of horror and regret; a happy night turned sour with one accident. it's a perfect little short, dark horror story on its own.

Low-budget success story

Paranormal Activity may seem like an overplayed, gargantuan household name in horror now, but this was the little film that could, made only for $15,000 but grossing close to 200 million dollars, it's still the most profitable film ever made. I think it helped usher in a whole new wave of horror, and though there were plenty of (bad) imitators, there's no denying Paranormal Activity's incredible influence.

Fargo (tv series)

The Villains

Lorne Malvo. Mike Milligan. V. M. Varga. No matter the season, you know Fargo is going to have an enigmatic figure at the core of it all. All three of the villains I listed share similar qualities; hyper-competence, devilish or other-worldly qualities, strong philosophical beliefs and genius-level intelligence. Lorne Malvo is my overall favorite, but I applaud the show for not making each subsequent villain a mere carbon copy of Lorne. Each villain is distinct and their unique personalities tie into the themes of each season. Lorne Malvo introduces an element of chaos and disorder in an otherwise peaceful, quiet town. Mike Milligan's soft-spoken and faux-polite nature coupled with his iconoclast appearance is perfect for the shape-shifting era the US was going through at the time when Fargo S2 takes place. V.M. Varga meanwhile is a villain purely of the modern era, an all-seeing Luciferian figure who deals in lies, misinformation, and deceptively cruel mind games whilst appearing untouchable to law enforcement or death. The villains of Fargo I think are a big part of what makes the show so excellent, and I know it's one of the biggest reasons for me why I get so hooked and involved in the intricate weaving plots Noah Hawley creates for us.

The Lore

I know very little about Magic: The Gathering aside from what I've researched for my horror ranking topics, and from what I've seen and read about, the lore is as rich and detailed as any game, comic, book, or movie series. Realms, towns, monsters, creatures, heroes, and magic are all filled-in to make the game tht much more engrossing for its devoted players. Not bad for a children's card game.

Metal Gear Solid 2

The Beginning of Arsenal Gear

Much like Psycho Mantis in MGS1, Arsenal Gear is where Metal Gear Solid 2 takes a turn into excellence (well, even greater excellence because MGS2 is near-perfect from start to finish). Arsenal Gear is the 4th wall break to end all 4th wall breaks. It starts in a recreation of Ocelot's torture room from the first game, with a completely naked (in many ways) Raiden sneaking his way literally through the belly of the beast. Raiden's CODEC goes haywire here as everything you thought you knew breaks down; Colonel Campbell is really an AI who goes off the deep end, shouting nonsensical phrases at you that veer into different camps of comedy and horror. Eventually, we run into Snake, the idealistic hero and the complete opposite of Raiden: dressed, perfectly-equipped ("infinite ammo"), clear-headed and in control of the situation. There are no strings on him, unlike Raiden, a puppet of the Patriots and of the player. This is a sequence of events that never really leaves you, even years after you've played it. Equal parts hilarious, mind-fucking, self-deprecating and undeniably memorable.

vergil quotes from dmc3

"Foolishness, Dante, foolishness. Might controls everything, and without strength, you cannot protect anything. Let alone yourself."

This is a perfect quote to encapsulate the kind of brotherly relationship Vergil and Dante have with each other. Vergil says this as he is stabbing Dante through the chest; a symbol of their eternal rivalry and desire to best each other. This quote is a true wake-up call for Dante's character in particular, as he activates his latent devil powers, channeling his father and resolving to be a stronger person. That's what the best brothers always do, whether its playful fighting or getting impaled through the chest on top of an ancient demonic tower.

The combat

Bayonetta is obviously one of the premiere character action games on the market. I mean, it's clearly evident if you've played it! It's complex and deep especially to the outsider, and the sheer amount of combinations and window timings and torture attacks is enough to make anyone switch over to easy automatic mode. But if you stick with it, and take the time to learn it all, you'll be S-ranking in no time. Plus, Bayonetta's great visual design and animation makes each battle big or small an absolute delicious feast for the eyes.

DCAU

Faithfulness and Tone

This is a bit of a tricky one for me because there's so many reasons why the DCAU remains the premiere interconnected universe even as the MCU and Arrowverse run rampant today. Ultimately, it's all down to its comic faithfulness and willingness to experiment with different tones that give each of its shows and individual episodes that special touch to make it stick with you. From Batman: The Animated Series taking cues from the Frank Miller era and mixing it with the occasional silver and golden age sensibilities, to Justice League Unlimited's expert use of a huge roster and rich tapestry of comic lore and history. From the fan-favorite "The Greatest Story Never Told" deftly using comedy to tell a small, intimate story, to episodes like Justice League's "Twilight" using grand concepts like the New Gods to tell a more sweeping, consequence-heavy story. And just like the comics it takes its inspirations from, it all fits neatly and has its place like any epic tale should.
