Among all the video games you're played, what is your favorite pre-established and/or developers created video game lore? By pre-established I mean something that the developers took from and build upon whereas developers created is something the developers built from scratch.

For me.....

Pre-established: Kinda torn between Warhammer Fantasy/40k and Lord of the Rings.

Developers created: Kinda torn between Warcraft and Mass Effect.

Comments are appreciated,

Thank you

Two games that made me go out of my way to explore the lore and read fan theories (because developers almost never explain shit after the fact) are Silent Hill 2 and Bloodborne.

One of my favorite theories about Silent Hill is that it's not a real place, but a sort of purgatory where people seek some form of redemption. Where inner demons come alive and they're forced to confront their guilt and/or transgressions.

Bloodborne has a fantastic fan breakdown that's worth a read if you're into that game at all:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1JL5acskAT_2t062HILImBkV8eXAwaqOj611mSjK-vZ8/mobilebasic

Not sure how close to the devs vision a lot of that conjecture is, but it "feels" like it makes sense after several playthroughs.

Mass effect is really cool, I'm going to start those books after I finish the dark tower.

The Nier world is very compelling as well, I hope they continue to develop it.

Mass Effect had those fantastic narrated codices, I listened to every one in all three games. Dragon Age also had some great lore, that I went out of my way to find religious texts hidden throughout

Speaking of pre-established lore, how are the Witcher books? The games and books aren't exactly tied together, right?

I haven't played nor read The Witcher, but I remember a friend telling me that Geralt is stupid OP in one and more realistically flawed in his skills in the other.

It might just be nostalgia, but I was pretty impressed with the lore that grew up around the Zork games.

https://www.thezorklibrary.com/history/00-encyclopedia.html

Actually, I suspect that the lore might go off the rails if you consider the Zork novels, CYOA books, and games published after Infocom folded. But I thought that those two ZorkQuest "visual novels" were neat, though they probably don't fit in with the lore from the main Infocom games.

Well, that's usually the main story for each game but there's actual lore to the entire universe. Like world creation and Triforce creation and so on and so forth.

Oh, right. Sometimes it's Agahnim, Veran, General Onox, Vaati, Bellum, Malladus, Demise, or some other variety of Ganon.

Sometimes it's not Hyrule, but Termina, Lorule, Labrynna, Holodrum, or Hytopia.

would metal gear solid count as pre established since its based on the real world just with some unnatural and sci-fi elements thrown in?

other than that, final fantasy, and I know thats broad but almost all the game at least share some similarities in lore, chocobo's moogles crystals that hold some sort of power, a lot share at least certain monsters like behemoths and the espers/eidilons/summons.

the lore does go deeper though. a lot of games can be broken down and made to look simplistic. and zelda is a simple game but its not that simple. if I recall aren't link ganon and zelda stuck in a continuous cycle of reincarnation?

I thought that was a pretty cool addition to the lore when I heard it.

and hell furthermore a lore doesn't need to be deep for someone to really love, it, sometimes all it takes is to be charming.

It just gets boring/monotonous after a while. Oh yay, a game where I play Link, save Hyrule, and "defeat" Ganon, in the sense that he's not truly gone, but will just return in the next game.

I don't mind. Kinda like how in Danganronpa it's always Junko. Basically, if you don't like it, you don't have to play it. Plus, it's not like it was Ganon 50, then all the others at once. It was split up. Random other big bads in games in between. And the big bad that will always come back is fine with me. It's suppose to be a battle that never ends. And that keeps taking place. And can change the world with each battle if it needs to. And the story of what you must do in each one is fun. You still do different things. Or have different ways to make him lose power. Or have to find your own power... or Whatever...

I dunno if it's my favorite, but I'm super impressed by BattleTech/MechWarrior, especially because of how plausible it is.

Overly simplified version:
In 2107 we invent FTL. By 2116 we're colonizing Tau Ceti 4, and from there galactic expansion explodes. We colonize up to around 30-50 light years from Earth, forming a rough sphere with Earth at the center. This becomes known as the Inner Sphere.

Wars and fracturing happens, and the Inner Sphere ends up forming 5 Great Houses, and in the very center the Terran Hegemony surrounding Earth. In the mid 2500s, the Star League is formed, uniting the 5 Houses and Terran Hegemony in what would become the peak of human achievement. The Star League lasts 6 generations, almost 200 years.

The 6th leader of the Star League, Richard Cameron, is betrayed by his advisor Stefan Amaris and assassinated. Amaris exterminates every last person with Cameron blood, and makes himself emperor of the Star League. Aleksandr Kerensky, the leader of the Star League Defense Force, fights his way to Earth and liberates it, killing Amaris and his line. Kerensky then takes the remaining members of the Star League Defense Force (who suffered 75% casualties in this war) and leaves the Inner Sphere.

The Star League is left in shambles, the Great Houses fight amongst themselves and fail to decide who should lead, and the Succession Wars begin. Basically, the Great Houses fight themselves into a small dark age, targeting each others infrastructure, and slowly falling backward technologically. A new concept is born: Lostech. There begins to be fewer and fewer people left alive that know how the remaining tech works, and fewer and fewer places where it can be manufactured. This becomes a more and more serious problem as time goes on.

After 2 centuries of post-Star League war, Kerensky's descendents return in a surprise attack on the Inner Sphere. Where the Great Houses had been languishing in the Successor Wars, the descendents of Kerensky, now known as The Clans, had not, and are now even technologically superior to the old Star League. And so begins the Clan Invasion.

Most (all?) MechWarrior game stories take place during the Succession Wars, either before or during the Clan Invasion.

way more details can be found at this wiki: http://www.sarna.net

most of this is summed up extremely nicely by the BattleTech intro cinematic:

Haha. Maybe video game lore doesn't sit well with some folks. I can hardly believe I forgot to include Star Wars as one of my favorite pre-established lore. I never got that into the Zelda games beyond Link to the Past and Link Awaken but I can imagine how rich that lore is.
