I'm thinking 1975. I mean, yeah, there's some disco pop junk, but... look at this list of albums:
Queen - A Night at the Opera
Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
Springsteen - Born to Run
Genesis - A Trick of the Tail
Aerosmith - Toys in the Attic
Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood Mac
Sir Elton John - Capt. Fantastic & The Brown Dirt Cowboy
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
The Eagles - One of These Nights
Kiss - Alive!

and that's only scratching the surface. That was just the first year that came to mind given how much really good stuff is from the mid-70s.

What say you guys?

1996
Not only was it just a tough year in life that stood out to me, but the music I heard on the radio at that time still plays a pivitol role in who I am.
Some of the songs that were played didn't come out that year necessarily, but they were still big (at least in Missouri.)
Matchbox 20 was new on the scene, Third Eye Blind was making waves, and No Doubt's Tragic Kingdom was still giving out vibes.

I take it this is an argument that an opus by Mozart or Beethoven actually made music a thing. Am I correct?

yeah maybe I'm mixing up the 1700s and 1800s... for Mozart anyway. I thought Beethoven was the 1880s... more like 1810s. My REAL bad >_>

I meant the kind that people actually play via a score and can recognize - what eventually became pop. Not just banging notes improvisationally.

I won't say it's the best year, but the most important event in the past 100 years was probably Beatles appearing on Ed Sullivan show in 1964.

Before that... maybe the premier of Rite of Spring?

Pretty sure 1983 has the most songs I like. Plus that was when Michael Jackson released Thriller. From 1982-1991 had the best music I find. And then 1992 happened and rap/r and b took over.

It was the year Der Ring des Nibelungen was complete, and first performed in its entirety.
