After running around and getting backstory for about 20 years, I've finally arrived at the Frozen Flame and Lynx, apparently.
There's Kid.

Not gonna lie, I just looked it up. Got the Chrono Cross, anyone know what it does?
Bout to fight this jellyfish.
Gimmick fight is done, now I have to retrieve the gimmick character.
Pretty dumb way of getting to the fortress, all things considered, but whatever.
And my first encounter is a giant yellow ball that sucks me in what

The Chrono Cross is causing those colored orbs to appear during battle so I assume you equipped it to someone.

Basically it is pivotal to the ending of the game. Theres a clue on how to use it properly in Terra Tower.

Also cameo (and death) of Robo/Prometheus during that FATE fight ;( RIP

You'll know when it's the final boss, they make it pretty clear "the final fight is ahead when you step into the light" type deal

All right, I'm not gonna lie, Chrono Cross is now in my top 5 RPGs. It just has so many fantastic things going for it. Won't be doing a second playthrough of it as I have 4 more Square RPGs to get through, but I've thoroughly enjoyed my time and hope to come back to it relatively soon. Thanks to everyone who posted in this thread.

I kinda thought you'd be a little more disappointed by the info dump right before the final battle. iirc CC is one of those PS1 RPGs that ran out of time and budget, resulting in a few major plotlines that had to be cut and wrapped up in text-dump fashion.

Makes sense, and I would have loved to see that as a more grand reveal, but there's not much I can do about it.

I certainly won't argue that something's better than nothing. And the text dump is all the information Crono, Lucca, and Marle's ghosts give you on the beach right before facing the Time Devourer. The biggest thing revealed there is the fact that Lynx was Serge's long-lost father, something that was clearly intended to be revealed during the normal course of gameplay. There's also some other revelatory tidbits that should have been played out regularly, but it's been probably 15 years since I played, and that info's hazy at best.
