Yes, and before you "both sides" this again, the common thread with these wasn't so much being pro-Trump, but anti-Hillary. They played a long game with the Berniebros too and it worked out. Obviously there is no way to concretely say those ads were enough to give Trump the push he needed, but it's laughable at this point to deny that the Russians wanted Trump in office

Lol so I was right. Facebook memes lmao. And that's somehow Trump's fault? And now... what should we do about that? Block the free sharing of information on social media from specific outlets? Sounds like something NK would do.

Because of 1.2 million spent on ads. Do you realize how thats actually not that much money? It really isnt. Especially not enough to influence an entire election where far more money is spent by the candidates campaigns

I'd actually agree with you. But my point was simply that there is concrete evidence of Russia attempting to influence the election. A lot of the more serious aspects are still being investigated. I'm not entirely convinced anything will come of it but is worth following. My ultimate point is that this is more than just a witch hunt, we know that Russia was trying to directly influence the election.

So while the 2016 shitshow extravaganza is mostly America's fault, it's still worth investigating foreign involvement. One of the key aspects of a functioning democracy is that it needs to be terrible on its own merits.

Are you suggesting that reinforcing people's specific biases by manipulating what shows up in their facebook newsfeed can't influence how they vote? Did they really only spend $1.2 million on ads? I agree that isn't much, but that's just one way of influencing. AFAIK anybody can make an unverified Facebook "page" for free, and those (and Twitter accounts) were a big part of it too. That stuff gets shared and shared and shared and ends up having a huge reach. Also, who knows if we really have a complete paper trail of who was actually spending money and where, that amount could be bigger.

The open debate, even if it is packed with lies, is baked into our constitutional republic. Is it really more the fault of the uninformed public rather than the people spreading lies when influence is the main factor, lobbying included.
