I have a basement unit. We had a heavy rain for several hours today. I was out of the house and not even thinking about it. Got home and it's soaked. Like, so wet that walking on the carpet with shoes on gets your socks and feet wet. So wet that books which were sitting inside a backpack which was sitting on the floor are now ruined. So wet that when I walked into my bathroom, I didn't even recognize the rug, because the color of it was so different.

Every. Square. Inch. In every room.

This is pretty awesome. Not.

Obviously nobody in the main office is there at 3am so I'm ranting here. There's literally nothing I can do about it at the moment. Like I don't even know where to begin.

Hoping you have renters insurance.

I forgot their hours changed a while back. They're only in the office week days. Best I can do is leave a message on the "emergency" maintenance line and wait for a call back...

Aw shit.

Guy showed up and looked around my apartment. His first thought was that it was leaking from behind my sink LOL.

I was like, uh, nah dude I'm pretty sure it's related to the foot of rain we had last night. He seemed reasonable enough to consider that a possibility.

He's going to talk to "the other guy" and see what he thinks.

On the bright side you can literally piss on the floor now

It's...kind of a drag, yeah! I'm just sort of sitting here in total wetness waiting for them to get here...can't really go anywhere or even do anything productive toward fixing the problem.

And it couldn't even have happened during the week when I'd get a free day off. Lousy.

This happened to me about a year ago. They'll come with a huge vaccuum to suck up the water and then leave a few big fans around to dry everything the rest of the way. It'll be noisy in there the next few days.

The extraction team is a man and his 5 year old daughter.

Before the clean everything, make sure you take pictures of all the damage and ask the guys if they have any paperwork you can have a copy of stating the damages.

This is going to be a very slow process.

He has a hose attached to a tool that's about 8x16. Moves it around a little at a time and stands on it for about 10 seconds, then moves to the next spot. And he has to cover the entire ~800 square feet.

Daughter is just sitting on my couch playing on her phone. My first estimate was probably too low, she is around 7 or 8 I'd say.

The guy was on his way to taking his daughter to some fun kid place for her birthday. The job is a longer than average one. She is upset. This is awkward.

Yeah I mean he's on call so I don't care about that. It's just weird because his job is basically to stand around for three hours. So we have to talk, and his daughter keeps doing the "Are you almost done?" thing.

It wasn't as nearly as big of a disaster as this, but when I was in college my AC unit started leaking water around 2 or 3am one night. When I called the 24 hour number for facilities to deal with it, the dispatcher asked me if it was an emergency and said that otherwise I should wait until morning. It was leaking enough so that I'd have to dump out the recycling bin I had under it every few hours, so I decided to wait.

When I called back at like 8am the same guy answered and again asked if it was an emergency, despite it now being within business hours, so I just said fuck it and told him it was because I wasn't going to tether myself to my room all day to avoid inconveniencing someone whose job it was to fix this stuff.

The guy discovered that my apartment has a pump specifically for preventing this from happening......and it was unplugged.

The amazing thing is I had a much less severe water issue several months ago, and the maintenance crew didn't even mention or check it.

Job is done, carpet is still very wet, but not so wet that your socks would get wet if you were wearing shoes.

Fans everywhere, blowing underneath the carpet, so it's bubbling up everywhere that doesn't have furniture on it. That's kind of fun, I guess?

Learned some good lessons this weekend!

So for the next 2 days my life is basically rearranging all the furniture in my apartment every 6 hours.

Why was your sump pump unplugged?

That is an excellent question. But I'm really curious as to why nobody on the maintenance crew thought to check it when I had a minor water issue a few months ago.
