Outside, your territory? We got people from Flordia, Georgia, Texas, and Oklahoma in here explaining that historical context is a thing, black people don't fuck with the flag, and TLDR: that the flag ain't shit.

The flags have been there for decades, but the sentiment hasn't. People see the symbol, but they don't feel any prejudice with it, it's just there. So when some political activists try to make a statement by reassociating it with feelings that aren't there anymore and then want to remove something that has been there for decades, of course there's going to be some resistance. It's like when some out of town development agency cuts down a century old tree in a neighborhood to build a billboard.

If a hypothetical person felt no sentiment to the ideals of the flag, then why would they fly it? Why is it afforded a place of honor?

Because with its widespread use it's become more of a nostalgic symbol of the south in general based just off of seeing it, you are super nearsighted if you think anything more of it.

The Confederate flag represents a group of people who literally were willing to die and murder other Americans to keep my ancestors as property.

This is also super nearsighted in the sense that even Robert E. Lee only fought for the confederacy because he couldn't fight his own family.

So he chose family over freeing a race of people from slavery...and that's supposed to mean something? Lmao fuck outta here

Unless that "our" refers to some other group, like the good ol boy Southern racists. Pls clarify

I've lived in the South my entire life and I always assume that people who are comfortable flying that flag are at least a little racist. Because we don't live in a bubble, and people know the implications of it.

As a non-racist I would never feel comfortable flying a flag that indicates to other people that I support the ideals of the goddamn confederacy

It isn't really any more complicated than this.

What about people from the south who just love the food, country music, fishing and hunting, etc. and just fly the flag becasue to them that's what it represents?

Symbols can have multiple meanings, or their meanings can change. If we're all willing to work at it, like that guy did, then why can't the confederate flag change and become a symbol of comradery and racial harmony?

Because we've not achieved that yet. And I made a comment earlier about cultural icons that were ruined by the conflict of the twentieth century. Not all cultural symbols can be reclaimed. I'm sure Buddhism would love its backwards swastika back, but that's not happening for a while, until after those wounds have healed.

The confederate flag is in cultural timeout until such time as the racial animus it reminds people of is gone. We've been trying to relapse into white supremacy these past eight years, or maybe we're discovering that it never really left us. Anyhow, it's going to take some time.

Ironic statement, because you seem to be the one trying to prevent people from seeing beyond 100 years in the past.

You're not the one who gets to say "ignore this part of the symbol's history, people use it differently now". That's decided by the zeitgeist. There's a reason we can't co-opt a black swastika on a white circle set against a red field and say "it means something different now".

Oh, I understand he chose his family over the overwhelmingly better choice he could've made to not lead an army that fought to preserve the "right" to keep my ancestors as property. Hes simply a fucking scumbag for it, just like any nazi general from WW2. Theres no justification for fighting to enslave or fighting for genocide

His country of origin is the US. He was born in NC. He's not a "former confederate soldier" (I have no idea what you even meant by that) nor does it seem that he has ever served in the military.

I mean, congratulations at finding a black person who flies the Confederate flag, but A) one example is not any evidence of a trend and B) boy this guy.

That flag is common in Canada too, at least out west. It's just a redneck symbol, nothing more. Rural Canada is culturally similar with all the outdoorsy stuff and English/Scottish heritage, though it's a different accent.

(I find the volume of Canadians that say "abote" or "aboot" and deny it to be amusing.)

Canadian. They tend to have maple leaf stuff everywhere too. I don't know any of them, but I see them a lot. It's basically viewed as "the redneck symbol" so people in the country will slap it on their car/truck, have belt buckles, etc. Nobody flies them in their yard though.

Huh. Seems to me like an appropriation for the purpose of solidarity in conservatism. I'm aware that there's a section of Canada with aligning views that have been kinda bubbling ever since the W administration.

Of course, I'm sure these folks don't "get it", either, but it happens.
