If we're all willing to work at it, like that guy did, then why can't the confederate flag change and become a symbol of comradery and racial harmony? Because we've not achieved that yet. And I made a comment earlier about cultural icons that were ruined by the conflict of the twentieth century. Not all cultural symbols can be reclaimed. I'm sure Buddhism would love its backwards swastika back, but that's not happening for a while, until after those wounds have healed. The confederate flag is in cultural timeout until such time as the racial animus it reminds people of is gone. We've been trying to relapse into white supremacy these past eight years, or maybe we're discovering that it never really left us. Anyhow, it's going to take some time.
