Almost anyone can become a good cook if they try and cook for many years, I've been cooking almost 40 years, and I am both very picky and love food alot. I will spend hours making food just slightly better then it would have tasted in 30 minutes.

Home made has a few advantages. First, you can afford to use the best ingredients/cuts of meat etc. Even doing so you'll spend WAY less then eating out. Second you actually get to choose the cuts/pieces yourself, when you eat out, it's random what you get, even at the best places. They are making many steaks etc, and can't only have the perfect pieces.

This can make a very large difference on how good a steak is for instance.

Lets take steaks as a very easy example. Any caveman can pretty much learn how to bbq a steak perfectly eventually. This is a very easy way to show the advantages of cooking at home vs eating out.

Buying a steak at a steak house is going to set you back at least $20 in most cases, often times it's that much even for a sirlion steak!! For half the price you could get a Rib Eye for instance, and.....not only that, but pick the rib eye you will be cooking (there can be a huge difference).

Then when you cook at home you can ensure it's the thickness and doneness you like, has the sauce/seasonings you like on it etc.

Even the best steakhouses (Which are very expensive), still are aproximating how you like your steak based on what you said Maybe if you eat there a ton and communicate with the chef he can eventually get it done exactly how you want it.

For breakfast, as an example, I like my hash browns extra crispy. If I order that many places they freaking burn the outside, and sometimes it's not all the way cooked inside as well. I love hash browns and would eat breakfast out way more often if it wasn't so rare to find ANYWHERE that can cook them decently (or doesn't use frozen potatoes etc).

Now don't get me wrong, there are good diners out there and they are gems when you can find them. It's been awhile for me (there is literally not one diner in the olympia area for breakfast that I would eat hash browns at sadly. There is the Bud Bay Cafe for sausages etc, but even they don't do hashbrowns right.

How can so many people mess them up?

I don't know, but if you have had good hash browns, you would certainly have a hard time going back to the norm...which is why I generally make them myself.

Well one thing with steak is you're most likely not going to find that many restaurants that cook them on a charcoal grill.

I think cooking for a long time means you can get better. But it doesn't always work out that way. Sometimes, people get good at cooking only a few things. Sometimes, only one thing. Also, there's the chance that they just get use to their cooking. And even if it isn't good, they're so use to it, that they think it's good. So, there's that, too...

I do think Home cooking can be cheaper. Until you get to something that needs lots of ingredients. Especially since certain ingredients, you have to buy in a pack when you only need one of two. Which is a reason I like restaurants. I can buy one of something without having to buy many of whatever ingredients.

And then it depends on how fast and well you can learn to cook. You said it yourself that it can take time. But I would want to waste my money on the best ingredients only to mess up time and time again. But if you go with cheaper or worse ingredients, the taste will be different. And it may even cook different.

Also, for the hash browns, I'm not sure that many people are messing them up. I think it's more that you said you kind of like them a little different. But if other's don't usually get it like that, then they may just not be use to it. Or other's who say they like it the same way has said they were good, maybe...

Also, I don't think I'd have a problem going back to restaurant just because I've had something good. I know because there are a lot of foods that my family makes that I like lots more than at restaurants, but I can still go back... Haha.

But it's different for everyone...

The are not Red Robin...which is really the international house of Steak Fries, but whatever.

Red Robin Burger is >>>>>>> * >>>>>> + >>>>>>>> then IHOB burger.....there is probably a red robin in most towns (or close to one) that has an IHOB and.......Red Robin has bottomless steak fries (you can get em extra crispy) AND bottomless root beer floats/strawberry lemonades etc.

Red robin is WORTH going to even if you grill a mean burger. The burgers are good enough (not as good as home, but good enough that you don't mind that much) and the fries are delicious. The prices are not horrific either (under 20$ per person for a good burger/endless fried and a bottomless drink. Under $15 if you just want the burger/fries and water.

Yeah you can make the same thing at home (a 10 pound bag of potatoes is $4), for about 5$ per person (as long as you are making it for 2 or more to split the cost of the potatoes/bag of buns etc).....but it's nice to go out.

I have a double date set up for next Sat at a Red Robin (I didn't choose the location lol).

And they might have something that somewhere else doesnt have... possibly... As for Red Robin, its good, I guess. But Id probably go to iHob, maybe. Im not big on steak fries or root beer, though Strawberry lemonade is good... And I dont really like the cost of Red Robin...

Red robin has insanely cheap burgers if you just want the never ending fries, or mildly expensive ones but are quite good.

They have the small $6 burgers, but, you get unending fries with that, so for $8 or so, a basic double burger (like from In and out...equivalent size) and uneneding steak fries. On a budget that is the most bang for your buck from any burger place other then going through Mc Donalds and just getting a double burger and no fries there (if you add the fries it's the same price).

Meanwhile the Classic is $8 base, but only $2 more for an extra patty (totally worth it. Comes with lettuce and tomatos (and pickles if you want), and you can get A1 sauce + ketchup (or mustard and ketchup, or mayo whatever you like) to put on it.

That is a BIG burger for $10 base...+ tax (11$) + tip (13$ or so total).

Now $13 is more then you will pay many places, but not more then at IHOB probably (at least very close), it's about whatyou would pay at sonic or In and out as well (for a much smaller burger). Carl's Jnr though still beats that price fairly well (Big Burger is now $2 and $1.25 for an extra patty, add $3 for fries and you check out at $7.50 or so....not as good or as many fries though).

In general, if you like steak fries (and if you are not asking them to be extra crispy, you are not getting them at the best, nobody I have shown the extra crispy thing to has ever ordered them normally again), Red Robin is your best value.

Carls Jnr is decent if you don't care about fries as much. If you have a big appetite, you could even get 2 double big burgers and fries and have it delivered (costs $5) for the price of eating at red Robin (not that I have done that a bunch of times or anything.....innocent look).

I use my town to go when I don't do that.....order 3 big burgers (but say the 3rd is to pay for the extra patty on the actual 2 I want ordered), and a large fry. It's $5 for delivery and about 6$ for the food, but I tip as well so it comes out to be $15 or so.....but yumness to my door (red robin also delivers through my town, but the cost is significantly more (The base price of the food is higher when delivered as well as the delivery tip ends up being $25).

Why are people so elitist about breakfast food/restaurants in general? Nobody thinks you're savvy or unique for saying "DAH LOCAL STUFF IS BETTER THAN CHAINS!" But breakfast in particular isn't really a big deal. Yeah, there is stuff out there that's better than Denny's, but breakfast is the hardest of the three meals to screw up.

Because it makes them feel better and they think it makes them look classy. After all, homecooking is the best and that local pizza place uses authentic brick ovens and has a chef who tenderly massages the dough and whispers sweet nothings into its ear as they work. But that Domino's? It's nothing but greasy bread with a bit of tomato on top! That McDonalds? It's food can be barely stomached and tastes like cow anus!

Nevermind that your 'homecooking' is literally just cracking an egg and some bacon into the frying pan and making a sausage patty is probably the limit of your cooking skill, you can't fully cook a burger patty and couldn't bread a chicken to save your life. Nevermind that the local place is currently under investigation under the accusations that the local chef has been making love to their food and you find hairs in the meal on occasion. Nevermind that, despite how much you badmouth the chains, you still put out an order for pizza delivery and have a wastebasket full of Big Mac boxes. Clearly the chains are terrible and you would NEVER be so degrading to eat there!

Whenever I think of Red Robin, I remember it being a little mor expensive. More expensive than fast food, but a little less than a restaurant... But maybe Im remembering wrong. Its been a while. And I also believe McDonalds is cheaper. But again, I could be remembering wrong. I do know I like McDonalds fries better, though... And I never order burgers from iHop(only breakfast if I go there), but I dont think the price difference would be much. To be honest, I feel RR would be more expensive...
