That's like saying it doesn't make sense for someone to not like tank controls in RE2 because they should've played RE1 for playstation

W1 and W3 have bad combat

I love the combat in W3, even without all the cool rpg stuff and story it would be one of my favourite games for pure gameplay. It's incredibly fluid and feels very natural to play, but still requires some practice on the harder difficulties.

Tbh, there was just way too much spinning and unnecessary flourishing. It's like Geralt only actually has his eyes on his target for 10% of the time he's fighting them.

W3 still has horrible combat (it's clunky and hard to control), despite W1.

That being said W3 is my favorite game, ever.

How is it clunky and hard to control? Because you can't button mash? It was always very smooth to me.

the problem with W3 combat is that the whole system has divided into either mash X for a physical player or if you use magic spam Aard until you can instakill people on the ground by mashing X

Fighting monsters can become slightly more interesting just because they aren't guaranteed to be stunlocked

It is fine, but doesn't match up with elites of the time. Combat in W3 is not close to something like Bloodborn.

Not saying it should be, but it is not as good as it.

Bloodborne has weird idiosyncratic combat that people have convinced themselves is good because they get to be part of a special club if they can master it, when really it's just bad game design.

I like the combat of Witcher 3, but I think some people were hoping for Dark Souls/Bloodborne/DMC type combat.

Most RPG fans I know love the combat. Most action fans I know complain about it.

It feels like you have very little control over the Geralt in a fight once you've initiated an attack.

i literally never felt this way once during the entire 150+ hours i played 3. i don't see how anyone could.

I don't know what to tell you, but I'm not the only one that feels this way. There are tons of discussions on reddit about it.

Yup, the movement was horrible and controls like shit.

well, tons of people must just suck at the game then.

I beat the game on Death March: the combat is bad and Geralt feels pretty clunsy in combat too. He has different attacks he does seemingly at random when you attack so you really don't even have full control over him and not all attacks have the same wind up so that's pretty dumb. You can animation cancel at least but you know you can do that in Nier: Auto Tomato but that game actually had good combat.

I think what trips up some people is it sometimes feels like you store button presses. If you press light attack three times, you seem to sometimes have a hard time canceling out of that button combo if you want to.

i have no clue what you are talking about here

In the sense that a light attack won't always be the same attack animation. Sometimes he does a spinning flourish, other times he does a slash from one direction, sometimes from another.

i had perfect control as well as view over the battlefield and switching signs, utilizing bombs on the fly and firing off arrows felt pretty natural with m/kb.

I did until they started nerfing everything. Bunch of crybabies started whining about how "Witcher's aren't mages" got all the signs nerfed. It's still a great RPG, but combat sucks and packs variety now.

Just mash fast attack until the enemy is dead. So fun.

And then there's the 12 perk limit. Just awful.

I was an alchemy/sign build and it kicked serious ass all the way to the end in Death March.

Whatever nerfs happened were probably well deserved considering even nerfed I was melting stuff with fire DoTs, avoiding all damage and stunlocking shit with shockwaves.

well, tons of people must just suck at the game then. it's pretty simply, really. press one button and Geralt does one action. press another button and Geralt does another action.

I've been the game on the second-highest difficulty. My skill at the game is irrelevant to how I feel about the controls.

I'm glad it didn't feel clunky or loose to you, it does to a lot of people. Thankfully the rest of the game is amazing, so it remains my favorite game ever.

Not only did the combat feel clunky like that, but Geralt's movement in general were bad.

Did you play before the alternate movement patch?

i never noticed different attack animations having any significant effect on my being able to effectively control Geralt in combat

I'd say attacks having varying start up times and ground they cover is pretty significant of a thing to not have control over.

I founder Witcher 3's combat pretty enjoyable, not the best ever but it was fun largely due to how fluid it was, and also because of the various types of terrain you had to fight on. The battles in that game have a tendency to move around

I loved W1s combat, more in tune with how Geralt fights in the books.

3 is solid but could've been a tad tighter. Like, I never use the targeting because that is way too wonky.

I'm more of an rpger though.
