You pout as you scoot away from her.

"I'll just read something you aren't reading yet," you say.

You go to her stack of books and pick out Magical Properties of Gem Stones Vol. 1. You haven't read it in awhile, so it'll be good to review.

You go past the introduction of how gems have magical properties to begin with, and when this was discovered, and by who, because you already know that so well. Instead, you start with the properties themselves.

The primary colors grant power that relate to the Jewelcrafter's self.

Red stones are of the body. They help the Jewelcrafter with speed, strength and healing.
Yellow stones are of the mind. They help the Jewelcrafter with intellect, skill and creativity.
Blue stones are of the soul. They help the Jewelcrafter with determination, courage and compassion.

The secondary colors grant power that relate to things other than the Jewelcrafter.

Orange stones are of the physical. They allow the Jewelcrafter to affect objects and people.
Green stones are of the mental. They allow the Jewelcrafter to affect thoughts and emotions.
Purple stones are of the spiritual. They allow the Jewelcrafter to affect spirits and ghosts.

It takes years of training for a Jewelcrafter to master any one type of stone. Even while yellow stones grant power of the mind, the strain of using that power will tax the body. And while red stones grant power of the body, the strain of using that power will tax the mind.

You catch Raven reading this book over your shoulder.

"*Ahem*," you say. "Didn't you just scold me for reading over your shoulder?"

"Yes, but this is different. I'm reading over your shoulder now."

"What happened to what you were reading?"

"I finished it."

"Then read something else while I read this," you say.

"But I wanted to read up on Jewelcrafting," she says. "I was hoping I could use the book to help me improve my Jewelcrafting level."

"Oh, that's true, it is your worse subject."

"Hey," she says defensively.

"Sorry, but you know that's the truth."

"Yeah, but you didn't have to say it."

"Well, go ahead and read over my shoulder," you say. "Let me know when you've finished reading so I can turn the page."

"Okay," she says.

There are various characteristics by which a gem by can be described, that then denote specific magical qualities. While a gem's color denotes its category, there are many subtleties that specify a gem's exact function.

If a red gem is deemed 'Delicate', it increases speed.
If a red gem is deemed 'Bold', it increases strength.
If a red gem is deemed 'Precise', it increases toughness.
If a red gem is deemed 'Flashing', it increases self-recovery.
If a red gem is deemed 'Shining', it increases stamina.

If a yellow gem is deemed 'Mystic', it grants better understanding.
If a yellow gem is deemed 'Quick', it grants better mastery.
If a yellow gem is deemed 'Fractured', it grants better reflexes.
If a yellow gem is deemed 'Pale', it graints better senses.
If a yellow gem is deemed 'Smooth', it grants better creativity.

If a blue gem is deemed 'Solid', it supports stronger determination.
If a blue gem is deemed 'Rigid', it supports stronger courage.
If a blue gem is deemed 'Clear', it supports stronger emotional stability.
If a blue gem is deemed 'Stormy', it supports stronger emotional intensity.
If a blue gem is deemed 'Sparkling', it supports stronger spiritual enlightenment.

"Those blue gems," Raven says. "They might help me with my powers..."

There are many more qualities relating to stones of secondary color. Gems of secondary colors can grant multiple powers depending on how much they relate to one primary color over the other.

If an orange gem is deemed 'Fierce', relating equally to red and yellow, it weakens the target's strength in body and mind.
If an orange gem is deemed 'Lucent', relating more to red than yellow, it weakens the target's speed in mind and body.
If an orange gem is deemed 'Splendid', relating more to yellow than red, it weakens the target's toughness in body and mind.

If a green gem is deemed 'Radiant', relating equally to blue and yellow, it weakens the target's mental and physical precision.
If a green gem is deemed 'Misty', relating more to blue than yellow, it weakens the target's emotional stability.
If a green gem is deemed 'Vivid', relating more to yellow than blue, it weakens the target's resolve.

If a purple gem is deemed 'Glinting', relating equally to blue and red, it can weaken the target's Druid Spirits.
If a purple gem is deemed 'Murky', relating more to blue than red, it can weaken the target's Summon Constructs.
If a purple gem is deemed 'Smoldering', relating more to red than blue, it can weaken the target's non-Druid Spirits.

"Wow," Raven says. "So, Roberta Rhodes could easily pull others down to a more manageable level?"

"Well, it only dulls the target by so much," you say. "If she tried such a technique on you or Renee, it might not be enough to make it an easy fight."

"So then, if Renee used Jewelcrafting like this on me, she'd have a better chance of winning?"

"It's possible. But the same could be said if you used Jewelcrafting on her."

"Except I'm really, really bad at Jewelcrafting..."

"Then we'll train tomorrow morning."

"Will we have time? With breakfast and the other guests arriving, won't you be busy?"

"We can do it early in the morning," you say. "Out on the grounds behind the manor. We'll get as much done as we can before breakfast."

"Alright," she smiles. "What will I need for that?"

"Well, I have an idea, but only if you have a spare belt like the one you wear with your leotard and cloak."

"Yeah. What do you have planned?"

"Well, we'll worry about that in the morning, after I've checked my own inventory," you say.

"Young Master Rory," Nadine says as she walks in. "Ms. Raven. Lunch is about to be served."

"Thank you, Nadine," you say. "We'll be right there."

Nadine nods and leaves while you get up from the desk. Raven puts a bookmark where you left the Jewelcrafting book. The two of you head downstairs and to the dining hall. You join everyone in a nice afternoon meal of simple pasta and assorted fruits.

"Rory, when are you going to ztop being holed up inside ze library?" Renee pouts.

"I'm sorry, Renee, but I promised Raven a whole day in the library," you say. "So we'll be in there the rest of today, up until it's time for bed."

She and other suitors pout and whine while Raven smiles.

"Then what about tomorrow?" Roxanne asks.

"Sorry, I'll be training with Raven in the morning. And she'll be joining me in greeting the other guests, such as Renee's cousin Rona."

"Yeah," Raven says. "Wait, I am?"

"Well of course," you say. "They should all get to see my wonderful girlfriend right as they arrive."

Raven blushes, then smiles again.

"And what about after?" Regina pouts.

"Well, I haven't thought that far ahead," you say. "But Raven and I will be busy getting ourselves ready for Father's party, so we won't have much time to spare."

"Then when will we spend time with you?" Rumiko asks.

"I don't know," you shrug. "Probably during the party."

The suitors pout again.

"How about this in return?" you say to them. "If any of you can wake up early enough, perhaps you can join Raven and I in our exercises."

"Really?!" they ask excitedly.

"Seriously?" Raven asks disappointedly.

"How early do you mean?" Renee asks.

"Dawn, 6 AM," you say.

The suitors whine again, but you can tell Raven has a bit of understanding. You saying 6 AM for local time will be easy for the two of you, who are still on American Pacific time.

"If not," you continue, "then that'll just have to be that. Our schedules are going to be full after that, from breakfast on until the party."

The suitors all consider the situation.

"I'll do my best!" Renee says.

"S-So will I!" Roxanne says.

All the others seem to reluctantly accept the challenge. They don't want to be up that early, but they don't want you to be left alone with Raven.

"Are you sure they won't be able to do it?" she asks you quietly.

"It's a risk I'm willing to take."

"So then," Father says as lunch finishes up. "Do you have any suggestions for tonight's dinner, Rory?"

"No, Carter and Penelope don't need to keep humoring me," you say. "I'll leave it to them to create a more than delicious dinner."

"Thank you, Young Master," Penelope says. "My brother and I will do our best to live up to your words."

Everyone leaves the dining room, and you walk with Raven back to the library. You enter inside and are all alone again as you return to the desk.

"How about we read these in more comfortable positions?" you ask her as you pick up the books.

"More comfortable?" she asks. "You mean the arm chairs?"

"No, I was actually thinking of on the upper level," you say. "There's a loveseat up there."

"Really? Why?"

"Well, for situations like this," you say as you lead the way.

You two go up the staircase, and Raven spots the loveseat with upholstery matching the arm chairs. She scampers over and sits down first, so she's clearly up for the idea. You walk over and set the books on the table nearby. You then sit down with the Jewelcrafting book and open it to where Raven put the bookmark.

There are many more adjectives that can be used to describe gems regardless of color that can denote any number of properties. This text only contains a list of the most commonly known and accepted words related to gems.

- Piercing
- Jagged
- Edged
- Effulgent
- Polished
- Potent
- Subtle
- Resplendent
- Fine
- Mysterious
- Purified
- Puissant
- Lightning
- Timeless
- Regal
- Guardian's
- Master's
- Enlightened

Surely there are questions how clear crystals like diamonds fit into Jewelcrafting. Diamonds and clear crystals are classified as 'Prismatic', as they hold all the colors within them. Therefore, a diamond can also have any of the words already mentioned and those eventually discovered to help define what it is possible of. Therefore, a diamond can be Flashing, Smooth, Sparkling, Fierce, Radiant or Glinting.

"Can you get me diamonds?" Raven says with a sparkle in her own eyes.

"Raven, come now," you say. "That's asking a bit much, managing enough diamonds for your belt."

"You're rich, aren't you? Plus you can use Alchemy to make diamonds."

"I'm not that good with Alchemy," you say.

"Then how about just one diamond?" she asks. "That way, I'll have a diamond and the six other colors."

A) Yes, you'll get one diamond
B) You'll do your best to get a diamond
C) Focus on the six other gems

"I'll see what I can do," you say. "I need to make sure there are no overlaps with the other gems. Otherwise you might end up with both a Radiant Emerald and Diamond."

"Alright," she sighs.

She settles back into you and you continue reading.

In order for these properties to truly manifest, it takes more than just holding a gem in your hand. To bring out the magic within the gems, they must be properly incorporated into the Jewelcrafter's clothing.

This method of embedding a gem into cloth, leather or even metal is called "Socketing", in honor of the earliest acts of Jewelcrafting were for adorning a knight's armor. The "sockets" created allow gemstones to easily be placed and removed from the clothing.

Contrary to popular belief, sockets do not need to be color coordinated to allow the gems to work. A socket simply needs to be properly attuned to carry the magical energy of the gem into the clothing and then the wearer of the clothes. Sockets will need to be maintained over time or else they will have faulty connections.

"This sounds a lot like electrical currents and batteries," Raven says.

"Yes, it does seem strangely parallel to it."

Naturally, Magical Tailoring as has stemmed from Enchantment Magic as a skill also needed of Jewelcrafters to maintain a gem socket. Therefore, a Jewelcrafter should make sure they've trained under a master Enchantment Tailor and have attempted many practice sockets before ever putting a socket on an item of clothing.

"Wait, do you know how to do that?" she asks.

"Well, I'm better at socketing on belts, which is why we're going to use one of your belts."

"Oh that makes sense."

The two of you keep reading, and finish the book after learning that there are also certain semi-precious stones like Jade, Opal, Lapis Lazuli, Onyx, Amber and Jasper also have magical properties, but as of this first volume, they were only just being introduced to the Jewelcrafting community.

"Let's track down Volume 2 and read up on those," you say.

"That's easy," she says. "I made sure to pick it out."

Raven pulls a book from the stack using magic, so that she doesn't have to sit up or lean forward.

"Ah, so you did."

You open the book, again passing up the introduction and unneeded information.

Studies into semi-precious stones like Amber, Jade, Jasper, Lapis Lazuli, Onyx and Opal have resulted in confirmation of their magical properties. They are capable of increasing multiple attributes simultaneously, but on smaller levels than true precious gems are capable of.

Amber is comparative to red, orange and yellow gems, and therefore relates to the body and mind. Based on the adjectives used to describe Amber, it can either increase the strength, speed or toughness of both the Jewelcrafter's body and mind.

Jade is comparative to yellow, green and blue gems, and therefore relates to the metaphysical. Based on the adjectives used to describe Jade, it can either increase the Jewelcrafter's magical strengths and resistances.

Jasper is also comparative to red, orange and yellow gems, and therefore also relates to the body and mind. Based on the adjectives used to describe Jasper, it can either increase the Jewelcrafter's mental and physical recovery or stamina.

Lapis Lazuli is comparative to blue, purple and red gems, and therefore relates to the body and soul. Based on the adjectives used to describe Lapis, it can either increase the Jewelcrafter's spiritual bond with Druidic spirits, Summon Constructs or non-Druidic spirits.

Onyx and Opal are comparitive to prismatic gems, and therefore can relate to all parts of a Jewelcrafter's abilities and attributes. Opals can increase the user's attributes while Onyx can decrease the target's attributes. Therefore, using both can create a massive gap between two dueling wizards. However, it would take a large mana reserve to use both semi-precious stones together, even with the aid of other true precious gems.

"Get me those...!" Raven says in a hushed voice of wonder.

"Okay..." you chuckle. "But, would you have enough knotches on your belt? I'm already getting you six colored stones and possibly a diamond."

"I have the stones on my sleeves," Raven says. "We can make those Opal and Onyx."

"Alright, sure. Opal and Onyx will be easier to track down anyway."

Raven smiles sweetly, which makes you smile.

Adjectives used to describe semi-precious stones are much more limited, however. There are no Flashing, Fierce, Lucent, Radiant or Stormy pieces of Jade, Jasper, Lapis, Opal or Onyx. Amber can still have these qualities as it is translucent, but the other semi-precious stones are too opaque. All the stones can still be Glinting and Sparkling from the tiny specks of reflective minerals, and the difference between the two would of course be the amount of reflective specks.

"Make sure to get me a Sparkling Opal rather than a Glinting one," Raven says.

"Of course," you say as you turn the page.

Other semi-precious stones are being investigated, but few have yet to yield any noteable magical properties.

Stones that have been varified to NOT have any magical properties include:

- Agate
- Amazonite
- Azurite
- Bastnasite
- Carnelian
- Fuchsite
- Howlite
- Magnetite
- Pyrite (Fool's Gold)

It is of note that Magnetite is easily mistaken for a magical stone, but as science now tells us, it is the origin of magnetism, not magic.

Stones that are still very promising include:

- Ammolite
- Bloodstone
- Fire Agate
- Malachite
- Meteorite
- Moonstone
- Obsidian
- Tiger's Eye
- Tiger Iron
- Zebra Stone

You turn the pages to where you can read about the promising stones.

Ammolite, with its rainbow flecks, is possibly a prismatic stone, but it is hard to establish a baseline. When Ammolite does present magical properties, it is never the same property, even when using pieces from the same block of Ammolite. Some are beginning to call Ammolite 'The Rainbow Roulette' for its unpredictable nature.

Bloodstone has nothing to do with blood, despite its name. Because of its combinations of red and green, it is expected to have qualities for the Jewelcrafter's physical body but has only moderately presented the ability to affect the target's mental and emotional state.

Fire Agate has prismatic properties, and shows to boost all attributes, but at very low levels. An interesting interaction is that Fire Agate does not stack its bonuses with other Fire Agate or other gems. The Jewelcrafter could wear multiple pieces of Fire Agate, but the total bonus barely differs from using just one piece.

Malachite acts differently than one would expect a green stone to behave. It helps with the Jewelcrafter's physical, especially in healing, which is more a trait of red stones. Malachite is therefore theorized to be a stone capable of inverting the properties of other stones.

Meteorite, in that it comes from stones hurled from space, have small amounts of magic. Meteorite can relate to every stone but purple stones that affect Spirits. Not much else is known about Meteorite, as the resources are rare.

Moonstone is not from the moon, nor does it relate to the moon. Moonstones being blue, they in fact relate to the spirit and emotions. What is unique about Moonstone is that it seems to relate to all aspects of blue gemstones, regardless of its adjective. It is therefore becoming thought of as the Blue Prismatic, even though that doesn't really make sense.

Obsidian is like Onyx, and relates to prismatic properties. It can lower a single attribute of the target, depending on its adjective.

Tiger's Eye and Tiger Iron relate to each other as complimentary stones. Depending on the adjective, Tiger's Eye will decrease the target's attribute while Tiger Iron increases the Jewelcrafter's attribute. For example, Delicate Tiger's Eye will slow the target down, whiel Delicate Tiger Iron speeds the user up.

Zebra Stone is another unpredictable stone. Its magical properties do not vary piece to piece, but day to day. One day, a Smooth Zebra Stone can be used to increase the user's creativity, but then used to lower the target's the next. Zebra Stone needs constant monitoring by the Jewelcrafter so as not to lose track of what function is active that day.

"These stones seem really different from all the others," she says. "The Zebra Stone seems almost too tricky to use."

"Yes, these stones seem more about subtlety and tricks than just knowing what they are and how they work."

Then you think.

"Doesn't the clasp of your cloak have a stone in it?" you ask.

"Well, no, it's all on thing," she says.

"But it can probably be made to house a stone," you say. "I'm thinking..."

"Obsidian. It'll balance your collection with you having a diamond and an opal."

"I like the sound of that. Does that mean you have Obsidian at the ready to carve?"

"Some," you say. "There should be enough for the clasp."

"Nice. Where do you keep gems?"

"Oh we have a room for all sorts of magical resources. I'll go there and work on some stones before dinner."

"Show me," Raven says excitedly. "I want to see this magic storage room."

"Well it's not exactly a storage room," you say. "It's more like a magical study, as in the room."

"Then show me the magical study," she says.

"Alright," you say. "You want to go there now?"

"Of course!"

"Okay. You'll have to put these books away for now."

Raven stands up and picks up the stack of books. She flies around the library and puts the books back to where she took them. She then flies back to you, beaming with anticipation.

"Well then," you say. "Follow me."

You lead the way to the very back of the library and open a door to reveal stairs. You go up to the next floor and open another door to walk into the private study.

"Wow," she says as she looks at the shelves and glass cabinets. "Oh is that unicorn horn?"

"Yes, what's left of one. It was longer than that but the base has been chipped away for the use in medicinal potions over the generations. But the gems and semi-precious stones are over here."

You walk over to a normal cabinet and open up the drawers. There are a wide variety of the many types and colors of stones with magical properites.

"Ooo~..." Raven says as she eyes sparkle looking at the gems.

B) Let Raven select the stones herself

With maybe a suggestion here and there.

"Feel free to select whichever ones you like," you say to her.

"Really?"

"Of course," you say. "In order to help your Jewelcrafting skills, you need to discern the qualities for yourself. Whether you want a Delicate or Bold red gem, a Mystic or Smooth yellow gem, a Solid or Rigid blue gem, and so on, and how to tell the difference."

Raven nods and looks closely at the gems. She gently moves the gems around, and picks a few up to feel the edges with her finger.

"Where can I place my selections?" she asks.

"I'll prepare a tray," you say.

You go to another cabinet and pull out a padded display tray. You bring it over, and Raven places her choice in red and yellow stones on the soft velvet.

While Raven goes back to check the blue gems, you inspect her choices. It seems she's chosen a Precise Ruby, and a Pale Heliodor. Therefore, she's looking to boost toughness and senses. At least, that's how it looks. You decide to test her.

"This Flashing Ruby has nice edges," you say.

"Flashing? No, I meant to pick out a Precise one. Wait, did I accidentally pick out something else?"

She looks over, then looks at you.

"Oh I get it," she smirks. "You're testing me."

"Maybe," you say smirk back. "But yes, you did get a Precise Ruby, and a Pale Helidor."

"Pale? I was going for Mystic."

"You were?"

She smirks and even chuckles as she goes back to the other gems.

"Oh ha ha," you say. "So then, what blue gem are you going for?"

"A Clear one," she says. "For emotional stability, so that my natural powers won't go out of control while trying to use other magic."

"That makes sense. Let me see which one you think it is."

"Well it should be obvious," Raven says as she holds one up to the light. "The clearest one is a Clear Sapphire."

She places it on the tray, and you varify that it is a Clear Sapphire.

"What were you looking for in the secondary colors?" you ask.

"Well, I already have Radiant Emerald in mind, to dull my opponent's precision. And I feel like a Murky Amethyst is best, because I can't be sure someone will use Druid spirits but they'll likely use a Summon Construct. So in the end, I guess I just need an opinion on Citrine."

A) Fierce
B) Lucent
C) Splendid

"Perhaps a Lucent Citrine is best," you say. "Slowing down your opponent can make up for any bonuses you don't have."

"I like that," she says.

She checks the orange gems, peering into the depths of the fiery colors. She puts down the perfectly orange and the yellow-orange stones to keep the red-orange one.

"Very good," you say as you place it on the tray for her.

Raven goes to the emeralds and amethysts, and picks out the perfectly green Radiant and the bluer Murky.

"Very good," you say again. "Now, since Opal and Onyx are prismatic, it doesn't matter what kind you choose. Obsidian still needs to be categorized, so what do you want to further lower on your opponent?"

"Umm... Lucent is for physical speed, Radiant is for precision, and Murky is for Summon Constructs... What about all those other qualities? Like Piercing, Jagged, Edged and all those?"

"Yes, we can work on making an Obsidian into something like that. But again, we need to understand what attributes your targeting."

"How about lowering their stamina? They'll tire out easier, too."

"In that case, I'll work on carving you an Effulgent Obsidian."

"Sweet."

"But before I carve out such a piece, let's make sure we have Opal and Onyx."

You go to the next drawer in the cabinet and reveal the carved stones of purely black Onyx, and white Opals covered in reflective rainbow speckles.

"Oooh," Raven says. "So which ones should I use?"

"Well, it would be good to go with matching qualities," you say. "It'll make for good symmetry, and better synergy between the two."

"Oh okay then."

Raven inspects the stones closely, but there are quite a lot to choose from.

"Well, it doesn't really matter what type I choose, right?" she asks. "They're both prismatic, so they equally affect the attributes."

"Yes, that's a good point."

Raven picks out an Onyx and an Opal from the same spot.

"Edged Onyx and Opal," you say. "Good choices. When a non-prismatic stone is Edged, it relates to magical power. The user will have stronger and more potent spells, while weakening the opponent's."

"Interesting," she says while you take out a block of Obsidian.

You go to the work desk with your Jewelcrafting tools and start carving out a gem. You first start with chipping off the corners to make the block into a cylinder. From there, you work to file the outer edge down to a rounded edge.

After that, you create extra edges to give the gem a nonagon, or 9-sided polygon, design. This is for how Raven will have nine gems equipped, from this Obsidian to the Opal, Onyx and six colored gems. Plus, to be Effulgent, it needs to refract light in a way for a nice, soft glow inside the crystal.

You painstakingly work on this gem for several hours while Raven went back to the library. She'd pop in and out from time to time, but would leave you be so you could focus on work.

"Are you sure you'll have the gem ready for tomorrow morning?" she speaks up. "I don't want to rush you, but with dinner and how everyone else will want to spend time with you after dessert..."

A) Continue work after dinner
B) Leave finishing the Obsidian until the morning
C) Go with the Obsidian as is
