So I've been in the mood to play a Kingdom Hearts game after all the E3 KHIII hype.

Having played both 1 and 2 multiple times on multiple consoles (PS2, PS3 and PS4), I thought I'd play the one KH game that I've never tried before.

My track record of completing the spin-off games are terrible though, mainly because they are inferior to the mainline games in every conceivable way.

CoM/Re: CoM is one the worst Action RPGs I have ever played with a plot that may as well not have existed. I did agonizingly beat both versions though (I was younger so I was more tolerant of these things)

358/2 Days was so boring with all its filler missions and I actually fooled myself thinking it would get better and played on for a while before I said no more and dropped it. I watched the cutscenes in 1.5 + 2.5 HD and that was more than enough.

BBS is easily the best one I have played from the spin-off games but it is not a very good game either. Everything felt like a poor man's KH1 and 2 and not to mention having to play as 3 different characters really dragged and soured the experience for me. The Disney worlds had a lot of potential but felt very limited and small.

Re:Coded is probably one of the weirdest and most unpleasant games I played. Didn't take long for me to drop it.

Given all that I have gone through with the spin-off BSes I'd say putting off from playing DDD till now was warranted. So then here I am, after all the E3 KH hype and giving the last remaining KH spin-off game a shot and abhoring every minute of it like always.

Here is my take on the game from playing for about 3 hours.

+Absolutely stunning graphics for the 3DS
+Great use of 3D function on 3DS
+Dream Eater system looks like it has potential but I can already see it has a lot of unnecessary fat that could have been trimmed to make the system more enjoyable to use.

-Camera ****ing sucks. The first boss fight against the Hockamonkey (or whatever) had me fighting the camera more than the boss.
-Enemies are HP sponges like in 358/2 days and that makes the battles a drag and not fun.
-Drop System is annoying. I actually got dropped right in the first boss fight and had to do it again.
-Maps are unnecesarily big yet devoid of any soul. I thought no way can Notre Dame turn out bad. Boy was I wrong. It was worse than Traverse Town.
-Character models are terrible and even more so when I'm forced to play as KH1 Sora and Riku.
-Most importantly, I hated almost every minute of the game I've played so far.

So should I continue and fool myself like I did with the previous spin-off games thinking it would remotely match the mainline game or should I just axe this playthrough and just wait till KH3 shows up at my doorstep next year?

It's kingdom Hearts don't expect quality

he's not exactly wrong (BBS is debatable)

3D is not very good, but it's probably the second best spin-off and is actually plot-relevant (yeah I know they're all technically plot relevant, but this one moreso)

I went down this path less than a week ago and couldn't even get that far into BBS before saying fuck it and deciding to just not play any of them.

Should I just restart in Beginner difficulty and coast through the game just for the story? Because I am not having fun at all. It is not difficult by any means (hell I loved my Proud mode playthroughs in the mainline games) it is simply a slog.

Also Notre Dame has possibly been the most soulless Disney world ever in the series. They didn't get it right with BBS' Disney Worlds making it too small but they went the opposite direction here in the worst way possible. Shame because this is actually one thing I was looking forward to in this game.

Does Square Enix just have like 1/10th the budget of the mainline games or something because this is kinda unacceptable so far.

If you didn't like BBS then you won't like DDD. BBS is better but they're around the same quality.

I will defend the map design, though. KH has had shitty map design basically since KH2 and DDD probably has the best worlds in the series. Them being huge is also awesome because you get to fly around them with Flowmotion (which if you're not doing, you're playing wrong). Notre Dame is the low point world but it's still fine.

If you're just gonna be slogging through with an attitude like that then maybe you shouldn't bother, I dunno. It's disappointing but maybe they just aren't the games for you.

Gameplay is a lot of fun if you're appropriately using Flowmotion. Attacks with that tend to be stronger, and its's more engaging than mashing the attack button, which I think is what a lot of people end up doing. Exploration is also pretty fun like this. Once you start zipping around the big maps, it's a ton of fun. When you account for the speed in which you go, the maos aren't really all that huge in comparison to other games.

Also, you get plenty of items to extend drop time. It's annoying to have to worry about, but if you dropped in a boss fight, that's not really the game's fault.

If you want to just rush through the game then you can cheese it pretty hard with Balloonra. That spell is super OP.

I think the reason why I'm questioning whether I should drop it or continue is because I hear the plot is actually quite important for the setup to KH3.

I've already beaten the mainline games multiple times, BBS, CoM, watched the cutscenes of Days and Coded. So this is like the last remaining relatively important piece of KH media before the 3rd game eventually hits.

I guess I made this topic in hopes that people would tell me that the games gets a lot better so that I have some motivation to continue.

It's not. I can probably give you the three bullet points this game contributes to 3, or you can just watch the final world cutscenes or something.

Also I am with you on the camera. It's different for a KH game. I got used to it though.

FWIW I think DDD is a huge improvement over BBS but if you're not having fun with a game you're wasting your time IMO. It is indeed hugely important for KH3's plot (like, the entire premise is mapped out in this game) so if you do intend to drop it I'd highly suggest watching the cutscenes on Youtube.

If you actually want to give the game a chance though I'd mirror prior suggestions that you step up your use of Flowmotion - the worlds and the combat are very much designed with it in mind so you'll have much more fun if you learn to use it. It makes the difference between being bored walking through huge worlds and zipping around like a maniac:

I also thinks it's better than BBS. Especially because of flowmotion. But if it's really bothering you, play on Beginner.
