Anyway yeah Marth and Caeda are the go-to recruiters if no one else fits, but Merric also could have recruited Wendell.

okay so

I'm doing the level where they introduce chests and locked doors

and there was a 2nd recruitable thief behind bars

I had NO idea you could just let the thieves from the other team steal the chests and then you can just kill them for it

I was doing CRAZY shit just now

Thanks to Lena's warp staff, I teleported my knight IN THE MIDDLE of the battlefield so he could block off the way to one of the chests on the left side and the thieves had to go the long away around

while they were going the long way, I had my horse units intercept them and kill them

I warped a lone axeman tot he top right to kill the one thief there and he took on 3 enemy horse units solo through miraculous dodging and criticals

while my lone knight was blocking the path off to the chest, he was SWARMED on by other knights and enemy archers. HES STILL ALIVE TOO

I wish I was recording all of this shit

then finally,one of my horse units missed a fatal blow on one of their thieves, he got an armorslayer from a chest, and then I killed him after and I got the sword

I did all of this shit for nothing

...............my jaw dropped

stuff like this is why I like reading topics from people less familiar with the series. I also remember the first time I figured this out while playing fire emblem and it blew my mind.

before that I always felt like it was a RACE where you're trying to get the chest before the thief can get there.

I guess this is a precursor to the support convos, but that was a pleasant surprise

Never, if you keep your units alive.

Intermittently if not. You've already missed 2-3 of them, not that it's a big loss (or even a loss at all).

the only decent character you get from a gaiden is Athena, from the first one. and really the only thing she has over Navarre is the ability to promote to Falcon Knight, which isn't even possible without cheat codes anymore (since they shut down the online shop).

oh and i guess Nagi but you don't have to kill off a bunch of characters for her.

12x: Have 15 or less characters alive by the end ofchapter 12
17x: Have 15 or less characters alive by the end ofchapter 17
20x: Have 15 or less characters alive by the end ofchapter 20
24x: approach the endgame with no falchion or tiki

that should be all five of them.

20x - Ymir - either warrior or berserker, can't remember (you'd reclass him to hero either way)

like I mentioned earlier in the topic it's generally easier to just do a pure everyone lives playthrough first, and then a gaiden playthrough second. the reason is because if you cull your roster down to 15 early on you can simply just keep killing/not recruiting new people as they are added and keep it under 15. this will allow you to get all of the gaiden characters to the end on your second run and you'll be able to unlock every epilogue very efficiently.

oh yeah the other way should work, too. I think the main reason to do it the 'everyone lives->everyone dies' order is because that way, on the second playthrough, you already know which characters are good and you want to keep them alive.

this will probably make you feel worse, not better, but Athena is also generally considered to be the best of the gaiden characters in terms of design, personality, and usability.

She's an archer so you didn't miss much.

I dont do no death runs. If they die then that's on me. I have no qualms with my men biting the dust, especially in this game where they literally have no development other than their death quotes

So like I said, I would've been fine with "the trade"

that's certainly one way of looking at it

the consensus is generally that the trade is not worth it, especially with how annoying keeping your army small is. no one warned you about it because it's usually bad advice to recruit any of them (except Nagi if you use an exploit).

I the only gaiden chapters I ever bothered to get were the first and last ones. The first one is pretty easy to get, and has a good character. The last one is also easy to get, and you can just use the Aum Staff to revive Tiki, so the end result is you have two manaketes and two Falchions.

There Is a whole gaggle of Pegasus units and some dragon units! Memories of Jill!

Some of the nameless (faceless?) Units attacked me and I managed to fend them off. However, the portrait units aren't attacking me. They expressed distaste for the general in the beginning

Maybe they retreat and I can get them later. Nobody can talk to them, at least anybody in my army at the moment

the chapter where you recruit Merric is a great opportunity to do this. it has a bunch of cavaliers charging at the party on an open field right at the start, with almost no where safe to go. especially on a harder difficulty this can be tough.

... if you throw sacrificial lambs in their path this will sometimes cause them to stagger their approach, since not all (4? 6? can't remember?) of them have to attack to kill one unarmed target, and this gives you better chances to manage the damage of the incoming attacks onto the targets you want to gain EXP. still allows you time to safely heal them after, before the next cavalier reaches them, provided you're good with spacing and positioning of units.

(any characters who survive to the end of a chapter where you're trying to kill fodder, you can just strip all of their gear and have them stand next to the boss. especially on a harder difficulty they will get DELETED pretty much instantly.)
