https://reason.com/blog/2018/07/12/starbucks-straw-ban-will-see-the-company

tl,dr: the amount of plastic used by the new lid is actually higher than that of the old lid/straw combo, meaning MORE plastic will end up in the dump, not less.

Yay, environment!

All plastics become microplastics. If you read the article, you'd know that straws are less dangerous long-term.

If anything, this is why the news needs to stop blurring videos of "tragedy" or stopping two frames before anything actually happens, yet still warning about "graphic or disturbing content" anyway.

We were able to handle Budd Dwyer in the 80s, and we could handle some kid getting machete'd to death today - may even accomplish something, like straw-up-the-nose turtle just did.

Rant aside, those "sippy cup" lids have an opening just large enough for some dumb animal to get its head stuck in.

Eh, we should be moving away from plastic products in general, given how harmful they've been proven to be. At least some progress is being made...even if it involves taking a step back after taking a step forward, in this case.

Eh. The fact the lids are recyclable is a huge thing and the article glosses over that pretty quickly, instead weakly mentioning problems with our recycling programs which is another issue in itself and has nothing to do with Starbucks or straws.

Also it nitpicks numbers from studies and then goes on to say disabled people are losing dignity and being but in a bad place? Cmon. How many people are possibly that badly effected because the straws are a different material?

It brings up good criticism but it totally downplays the same scrutiny of its own points.

It gets sorted somewhere, just not at the bin.

I'm pretty sure most recycled shit ends up in incinerators/landfills anyway, because it's cheaper and uses less energy. It just makes people feel good.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/09/business/starbucks-plastic-straws.html

In the United States alone, an estimated more than 500 million disposable plastic straws are used every day, according to Eco-Cycle, a nonprofit recycling organization. Although plastic straws are made from polypropylene, a recyclable plastic, most recyclers wont accept them.

Plastic straws are pretty small and lightweight, so when theyre going through the mechanical sorter, theyre often lost or diverted, said Sam Athey, a plastics pollution researcher and member of the Plastic Ocean Project, a nonprofit based in Wilmington, N.C., that aims to reduce plastic use.

That means plastic straws get tossed in the garbage, ending up in landfills and polluting the ocean...

It is difficult to know how many straws or straw particles end up in the worlds waterways and oceans, but plastic straws are one of the most common items found on beaches, according to the Ocean Conservancy, whose volunteers have picked up more than 9 million straws and stirrers from beaches and waterways.

Starbucks is just an opportunistic company that jumps on whatever social trend is going to get them the most free coverage. If you peel back the layer of insincere activism, you find most of the shit they do doesn't help anyone other than themselves.

My personal feeling is that as long as they continue to gender segregate in the middle east they can fuck right off with pretending they care about anything.

And that'd be fine. Businesses adapt to the cultures of the country they operate in all the time. Most businesses don't ALSO try to gain activist cred for constantly inserting themselves into social issues like Starbucks does, though.
