I found all four of them to be pretty tough. Starseer managed to get my whole party unconscious and then I just slowly died over the next few turns.

Archmagus was the easiest because of reflect spam.
Looking up the youtube videos, I can imagine Warmaster and Starseer being way too annoying to fight if you cant outdamage them.

Starseer was the easiest for me. I believe I did it second, and it just died before it could do anything beyond its standard attacks.

Is there something that makes Tressa better as Runelord than the other characters?

Every chapter 4 complete, now just to round up all the side quests/optional dungeons and also do that fancy final thing I've heard about being available once you beat all stories and a few side quests.

I've been busy lately so haven't had much time to play. I finished the Chapter 2s of my second party, and levels are already good enough to start Chapter 3s. I'd heard one person say that 31 of 32 chapters all follow the same structure and only one deviates, and I'm guessing they were talking about Olberic's Ch. 2.

That's correct. I do wish some followed other formulae. Especially Tressa could've had a completely non-violent chapter. A couple of the Chapter 4s ever follow the same formula as each other, which is weird.

Thoughts on the character stories:

Ophilia: Basically good stuff from start to finish. The way the challenge (story-wise) gradually escalates is great. First, just getting the flame is the challenge. Then delivering the flame is easy, but she has other problems to deal with. Then she faces an obstruction to her quest itself, and finally she has to go into enemy territory and defeat them. This was also the best "guy controls a town" plot I think, since it tied into the rest of the story quite well and the religious stuff made it feel different. It's all very well done. Solid group of supporting characters too.

Cyrus: Even better than Ophilia's, mostly because the supporting cast is awesome. There's a whole bunch of other characters and they're pretty much all great. The last boss is really cool too, and unique from the others. I quite liked the final dungeon. Neat how it (assumably) sets up stuff for the post-game as well.

Tressa: Not my favorite path. I like what they were going for with a non-action based story, but it was just full of dungeons anyway. Plus, I hated Ali. Chapter 4 was really good though.

Olberic: Quality from start to finish. Best part was reconciling with Erhardt and fighting with him on your side. Chapter 3 was the real climax. Only disappointment was that chapter 4 felt like a bit of a retread with the "guy ruling a town" thing, and in a less interesting way than some of the others.

Primrose: By far the most interesting IMO. Really felt like they were going for the emotional punches and giving everything real impact. The twist that Simeon was the villain was a bit weird, since I thought he was Primrose's age at first, but I guess he's just a creepy old guy. Also Chapter 4 was super insane and cool. Definitely the most bizarre part of the game.

Alfyn: I had no idea what they were going to do with this after the first chapter, but unlike Tressa, they actually managed to bring in some interesting side characters for chapters 2 and 3. Ogen, Miguel, and Vanessa were top tier for the game, and they felt like they challenged the protagonist better than anyone in any other route. Chapter 4 wasn't quite as strong a finale, but it was good.

Therion: Cordelia and Heathcote were awesome. I liked every part of the plot that had to do with them a lot. Wish they'd been focused on more, even, since the recovering the dragonstones adventures weren't as exciting. I didn't really like the Darius stuff that much. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great, and it had the same "guy controls a town" plot.

H'aanit: Very good stuff from start to finish. I very much liked the focus on monsters rather than people. Made for a refreshing change from the other routes. I even would've liked less focus on people - the scenes where she talks to herself in the forests and such are the best. Great stuff.

All the routes were good stuff in general, pretty much, with Tressa being the only one that was really a letdown.

Well I tried out the final dungeony thing...

And fuck this shit. Have to sit through eight boss fights just to get to the final boss, and they're not too impressive so I figure I'm strong enough...then the final boss is a gigantic, insane difficulty spike and you need to have two fully equipped parties to deal with it, not that I got to see the second one in action before I got annoyed at stopped? I've done a lot of exploring and side stuff and stolen several cities clean of all their valuables, unlocked every advanced subclass and generally got my team set up pretty strong, so it's not like I'm underleveled for what you'd expect of someone who has just finished all chapter 4s. I am so not interested in a final boss that I have to waste a bunch of time just to get one try at without any save since before the previous boss rush

100% agreed with Panthera. Dumb as shit. Lucky that reviewers didn't get there or they'd probably have docked a few points from the game's score. If anyone tries the final dungeon, I'd highly advise reading strategies beforehand unless you want to waste your time.

I actually beat the first form. It wasn't insanely difficult, but it was tough...and then the second form was way tougher, and I had to fight it with my "secondary" party? WTF? How is that intuitive at all? I did have a well leveled secondary party and I put Tressa in there to keep them all alive, but that wasn't nearly enough, since he had that stupid "nullify all status enhancements on your party" shit. I didn't even manage to kill one of the enemy parts since I was basically constantly healing the whole time. Seems like it'd be impossible without Saving Grace on every character.

It sucks because I really enjoyed the final dungeon until then, and part one of the final boss was really fun. Oh well. Time to Youtube the ending I guess. I don't understand why you can't save in the final dungeon. It'd actually be fun to try the final boss again if I didn't have to fight eight fucking bosses on the way, and set up all 8 of my characters again.

Okay, an hour later and watching youtube my rage is mostly abated. The lack of save point is still very bad design though. I'd be happy to try the final boss again (and probably win) if I didn't have to waste all that time again).

The second phase is actually easier IMO.

Yes you are supposed to use saving Grace, and being level 65-70 with all characters. Its rude that there is no warning, but still its very doable.

I have no doubt I could do it with Saving Grace on all my party members. I'd be surprised if I lost after trying again. But I'm not going to do it, because there was no save point.

Thats actually normal. I suppose your main roadblock was not expecting round two.

But the eight bosses beforehand never take too long that I feel like its an effort to redo them... Even if I did it in one go.

Divine skill spam, concoct spam and item spam makes the first phase easier.
But this is more advice for those who do want to have a go at it.

For me it's not really the time investment so much as it is the general principle <_<

With a bit more prep and maybe reading up on what the second phase is like I'm sure I could beat it, but I don't feel interested at all in playing a game that is deliberately set up to screw you over like that. No save point inside, no leaving, no warning that you'll need a full team, and the final boss is a huge spike in strength compared to the other bosses so even if you clown them you might be borderline on winning legit? Stupid and I have no desire to indulge it

All secret jobs GET! These are so damn cool/broken, lol.

The fights to get them were generally pretty cool but I actually hated the Runelord one. He's easy as pie until you get to his final phase and then if you let him get even one attack in you pretty much get status locked until your party is wiped, not a good time. Died twice because I wasn't using an obviously broken comp and it kind of felt like the game telling me that I'm wrong for trying to have fun. I'm also a bit worried that Saving Grace feels a little TOO necessary for this style of super boss.

Saving Grace should never be off for bosses from now on.

Also Each classboss gets really crazily deadly if you let them get to their final phase.
Starseer starts healing herself for 10000 HP and regens another 3000 each turn.
Warbringer can get up to six attacks a turn.

The four secret jobs are probably the hardest bosses in the main game. I think I'd say there's only one other that's on their level, so I wouldn't say Saving Grace is really mandatory for anything else.

Except the bonus dungeon's boss lol. Do not play that without Saving Grace on all 8 party members.
