My aunt was posting some meme of how Putin shouldn't be considered a villain because he, "ran the Rothschilds out of Russia and banned GMOs" or some other thinly veiled conspiracy theory nonsense. Yeah, people are people no matter where you go. Saying 'respect is part of the culture' is disingenuous and naive to begin with. Most cultures have some sort of idea of 'respect', but the problem is that how one interpret's respect is so radically different for every culture that it might as well be completely different concept. It basically just boils down to 'that country's conception of respect is most similar to our country's' when people say that.
