Well, it has historical precedent

The Smoot-Hawley tariffs enacted by President Hoover in 1930, which were 40-60% on imports, saw national income fall by 36%, unemployment increase from 3 to over 25% and 40% of all banks were permanently closed. Most economic historians agree that these tariffs exacerbated the Great Depression. If you want to go full Godwin's law, it has been argued that the Great Depression and economic activity led to the rise of nationalism and extremism, and the rise of Hitler.

Even more recently, when Bush tried to put tariffs on European steel, the United States Dollar index fell from 115 in January 2002 to a low of 81 in January 2005.

Protectionist policies force consumers to pay higher costs for goods and services and inflation increases.

Are you telling us or telling yourself so you feel better?

Trump has put into place multiple cronies into key positions in the executive branch that are either unqualified for the job or appear to be actively trying to do the job as contrary to the position as possible.

He pulled us out of the Paris Accords for no good reason.

He wants to build a physical wall on the Mexican border.

He attempted to remove transgenders from the military.

He directly threatened the president of Iran on Twitter late last night

The problem is that when someone makes so many poor, self-serving, impulsive, or downright dangerous decisions, it's tough to give light to just one or two. It all kinda gets lost as a mush of general bad behavior.

And this is why "the average liberal" has a tough time answering the question of "why Trump is bad". It's because there's not one simple answer, other than "he's a idiot". It's a pattern of behavior that bespeaks of an unhinged mind.

when it comes to politics, i think if you play fill in the blanks with the topic title it's basically always accurate

if you ask the average _____ why something _____ did is good/bad they can't answer

examples:
if you ask the average "liberal" why something "Trump" did is "bad" they can't answer
if you ask the average "Trump supporter" why something "Trump" did is "good" they can't answer

Typical responses. The average liberal reads a headline and extrapolates. You can't win a trade war with the US in 2018. The great depression and recession weren't caused by tarrifs, maybe tarrifs hurt more during them. We aren't headed towards a recession no matter how much liberals pray for one.

I'm sure the average liberal has no idea what the Paris Accord even does, but now that America left it means climate change will wipe us out, WRONG.

A wall has been talked about for YEARS, by both sides because there is a real benefit to it.

The transgender thing was addressing the possibility of solely using the military to get surgery.

The thing is, nobody wins trade wars. They're economically devastating to whoever participates. Even if America "wins" the trade war, your economy will take a major hit. That is what happens. This isn't a Trump thing. This is basic economics. Not once in the history of economic policy have tariffs and protectionist policies led to a positive impact on economy.

Okay, let's play hypothetical

America has business boom
America goes out and tears up all their deals and makes ones that benefit America more and their trade partners less. Let's say these deals all go through, for BIG BUSINESS REASONS
Trade partners get raw end of deal
Trade partners economies crumble
Trade partners no longer trade with US because it's not viable for them
America needs to now make their own steel/electronics/vehicles again
Americans aren't going to work for $2 a month so cost of TV goes to $10,000, cost of average car goes to $80,000 otherwise businesses don't make profit
Nobody buys goods and services because too expensive
Companies increase prices
Still no buyers
Companies sack everyone
People have no money to buy goods and services and there's no jobs because companies can't sell their goods and services

It's booming because of increased globalisation, innovation and technology. Protectionism rips those three away. And the entire rest of the world is moving more and more to globalisation. All the work the GATT did saw economy booms.

I'm just saying, I'd be very worried about moving towards protectionism in the 21st century. Luckily as an Australian, we moved away from the Americas and towards Asia over the past few decades so if your economy tanks, we shouldn't be affected.

No, I can clearly state the bad things he did;
- The American economy is heavily based on both exports and imports. Ruining trade partnerships in a pissing contest is not good for the economy, and the businesses that rely on imported raw materials are going to suffer massively for it.
- His tax breaks didn't create any jobs.
- Coal is not a sustainable, or particularly lucrative industry. Trying to push it as a sort of conservative industry is ridiculous when we have so many better options out there that are sustainable and no longer have near the price tag they once did.
- Any sort of statement about removing the checks and balances is a move away from democracy.
- His statements about news media are tantamount to propaganda. "Fake news" accomplishes nothing. It doesn't actually hold anybody accountable. All it does is give him a backdoor if he gets called on anything. Further, the statement that news is the enemy of the people/democracy is so categorically incorrect that it borders on the offensive.
- The wall won't stop immigration. It's a huge, expensive project to appeal to his voters that will never get completed and even if it did, it would do nothing because border jumping is not the principle source of immigration anyway.
- The travel ban was pointless pandering. It doesn't work unless every single country institutes the same bans, since people can easily move about to countries that aren't banned. It also had ridiculous criteria that accomplished nothing.
- His history of sexism, racism, and other acts leaves him a poor model for anyone.
- His constant threats and yelling are actually incredibly poor diplomacy. He's actively pushing other countries away who are now making incredibly useful friendships with each other and cutting America out of the equation. No one will take him seriously, either, which is incredibly important for a diplomat.
- So far, all of his appointments have been incredibly unskilled in their respective fields and simply allies for him. This partisanship only serves him, not the country. An anti-technocracy stagnates and ends up with more problems than solutions in the long run specifically because the people in charge don't even understand what they are in charge of.

The ACA was set to inflate premiums before Trump.

Betsy DeVos is another headline grabber. What is she doing now thats harming education? Scott Pruitt was brought in to cut the needless regulations. Tax reform has done nothing but put more money in people's pockets and promote business.

And again, just because a someone comes to this country with a child doesn't mean thats their actual parent. To ensure the kids are safe its needed to keep them away from the illegal immigrant until it gets sorted out. Could the facilities be better? Yeah.

The internet needs reform, too many think companies should be at their mercy.
