We've created a sixth branch of the United States Armed Forces that won't do much until decades later, when the technology has gotten to the point where there's actually a need for it. In that time, it's just a money pit that will just suck more money, thus fattening the already-gargantuan military budget. Why? Because of the idea that America should be first in everything and fuck all who disagree. It's wasteful spending and just a waste of resources that would be better spent elsewhere, like adding to the budget to fix the country's crumbling infrastructure, education, healthcare, etc. ... The Army Air Corps was once its own entity until the Air Force was created out of it in 1947. The need for a dedicated branch commited to air power was what led to that. @LinkPizza, for as much as you speak of having been in the Air Force, I think it would be remiss of you to have disregarded that fact.

I think a number of you are forgetting the amount of research and development thats gonna come out of a US army space initiative. A lot of this stuff will inevitably filter down into the consumer realm or at the very least trigger some additional non-military research.
