I get that it has to be done but they're doing the whole damn city at once.They're even re-doing a part of the busiest part of the highway that they just did literally 2 years ago because they f***ed up the first time. I mean alternatively, there are all kind of jobs with like "X weeks on Y weeks off" shit where instead of weekends, it's like four weeks on, one week off (or whatever the specifics are) instead of the normal M-F schedule. Why can't they switch to something like that when there's a project going on?

You can't look me in the eye and tell me it doesn't piss you off when you and millions of other people are dealing with unnecessary backups while the bulldozers and equipment sit there unused for 48 hours a week.

Daily construction diary: My highway ramp was blocked off but there wasn't a fucking soul around. No equipment either.

This is Monday at 405 PM. Normal work hours.

One of the major intersections in my town is torn up, as it is every year. This time, theres a 12 foot pile of asphalt and a bunch of cranes. I checked online to see when they would be finished. Late November. These guys knock off at 5pm and take weekends off. There had better be tunnels for bikes and turning lanes (which should have been there for 20 years).

They redid a section of a 2 lane road near me recently, It must of taken them 2 years to replace selected sections of pavement, one at a time, and as slow as fuck, then they paved over the whole thing in blacktop in 3 days.

Not really, I'm just speaking my mind instead of rolling over like the rest of the sheeple. I literally called the city yesterday when I saw my ramp closed and it was not being worked on at 405 PM on a Monday. Granted all I got was some secretary so I wasn't going to bitch out someone who couldn't do anything about it, but I plan on trying again until I actually get some answers.

Seriously. There are so many workarounds of contract situations to speed up the fucking process instead of assblasting literally every resident with a car.

Also daily construction update: They put up a sign at some point last night saying my ramp from 169 --> 212 is going to be closed starting August 22nd. Remember this is IN ADDITION to the 62 --> 169 ramp that fucked me over yesterday (post #20). Not to mention I literally can't get to/from my apartment garage without driving on some sort of dirt road and it's been that way for months.

I hate how little work they seem to do. The parking lot I use for my train has been under construction for the past 2 years cause for some dumb ass reason they are also building an luxury apartment next door and they put all their work into that instead.

So we get shitty parking, whilst they waste their time on something else and now they fucking got rid of two roads to do some weird ass thing. Dug up the roads near the exit, so there are now only 2 lanes. Which means left turners are stuck with right turners for who knows how fucking long.

Also why the hell would anyone live an a "luxury" apartment that is build across from a train station, and therefore a train track? Which across from that has a cement making factory?

I realize this isn't directed at me, but I think we could negotiate contracts that specify working during non-drive time hours and not have to pay a cent more (let the contractor figure it out)

this is not common (I don't know that anyone has ever stipulated this before) but it is certainly theoretically possible

Ive heard construction companies also purposefully use outdated and cheap matierials/methods so they can come back to do it again sooner and get that constant revenue from the local and state governments.

If there is roadwork that is a huge inconvenience (say it causes 30+ minute delays) then construction should continue 24/7 until it's complete IMO. If they don't like it they can work at Walmart or some shit.

It boggles my mind tbh. I-95 in NJ, they tore up massive patches of the highway first and weeks later theres no paving. Like you think they would work it in sections? Maybe the road would actually get paved faster that way. Not that there was even really much of a problem with it to begin with

That brings up a funny point too about rural-highway construction as opposed to city-highway construction

One time they closed literally six miles of one lane for about half a mile of work.

Seriously. People act like it's impossible to have work going 24 hours.

They can do it at night too, I've fucking seen it. I was doing the I-35 drive at like 1AM for some reason, and I saw them still working with these massive lights set up. It made me happy.

Now, granted, I do assume noise is an issue in areas, as this was rural buttfuck nowhere Iowa. But I'm absolutely certain there are things that can be done that aren't massively noisy.
